‘C'mon Babe, why don’t we paint the town… And all that Jazz. I’m gonna rouge my knees and roll my stockings down… And all Jazz. Start the car I know a whoopie spot… where the gin is cold and the piano’s hot. It’s just a noisy hall, where there’s a nightly brawl… And all that Jazz.
Chicago (2002) dir. Rob Marshall

This revival of Oklahoma! directed by Bill Rauch casted every main character to be lesbian, gay, bi, or trans. This obviously created a whole new level of depth to the show, none more apparent than in one of the most iconic duets in musical theatre, “People Will Say We’re in Love.” Here Curly and Laurey talk about people thinking they’re in love with each other, and the hesitation they have to show affection for each other because of it, now influenced by comp het and the fear of what their community will think of their relationship. “The Band’s Visit is a very atypical musical. One could even argue that it’s a play with live music. All the designs support the non-musical theater conceit of the storytelling and the architecture of the music. What thrills me are the risks we’ve taken by not presenting ideas in flashy overt ways, but that ask the audience to lean in and pay close attention to nuances and details. Not your typical description of a musical theatre lighting rig. We knew it wasn’t a flashy musical that would be loaded with a lot of cues, so it became, “Well, what do we need to communicate the atmosphere of this night in this town, and the relationships of these people?” We wanted to do it with as little as was necessary, but still give each intimate storyline a distinct, emotional feel and location. For The Band’s Visit, the design team and I spoke mostly about color temperature, from warm to fluorescent tones, and uniformity, which we need as much as possible to make it like realistic interior lighting – like you’re looking into someone’s home.”

“You know Tewfiq, these songs, these movies that we talk about before, sometimes they are not so empty. There is love, and I think that now this night we could live this love again. You know? Big love, in big Arabic words, but I’m afraid I will fuck it all up, like everything else. My life Arab movie, Arab song.”
