Kubuntu 16.04 and Intel Graphics

I have updated my Kubuntu freom 15.04 to 15.10 and finally 16.04. Althoug most of the process went smoothly I encountered some snags, that needed tweaking.

Breeze and Intel graphics do not like to play along

Wehen being presented with the login screen and entering username and password, the fields got grayed out but nothing else happened. So I switched to another console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) to check put what’s happening. As it turned out, switching back to the X-screen (Alt-F7) magically had solved the problem and I was presented with my usual desktop.

After googling around I found some bugs involving Breeze (the thing that manages and displays the splash screen) and Nvidia cards and one here having to do with the acceleration mode. Building on that, I followed the instructions here and that solved the problem.

For completeness:

I created /etc/X11/sorg.conf and added those lines:

Control Panel Over/Under broken on Login

I like to have my KDE Control Panel on the left hand edge of the screen, with no overlap with windows whatsoever. Unfortunately this setting was lost on each and every new login.

The solution was to install the KDE Backports for Xenial Xerus as described here.

Command line audio player

Some years ago, more than I am ready to admit or even think about, I switched from using Windows to Linux (used as in "various destributions of GNU/Linux"). This only concerned my private computational needs, for professional reasons I am still shackled to Windows (although the chains seem to loosen up a bit lately). It was a rather smooth and gradual transition, from playing with an old PC, then installing a dual boot system on my main machine, first with Windows as the default, later with Linux as default OS. Finally I discovered, that I fired up Windows only once or twice a year and therefore moved it into a virtual machine should ever the need arise to run something for historical or archival reasons.

Using Linux (now mainly Kubuntu, with the odd OpenSuSE on two servers) I set out to conquer the command line and discovering - just as before - that I liked it so much, I gradually abandoned GUI programs for a lot of tasks. Most graphical design, surfing the web and spreadsheets are still a domain for GUIs (and I definitely won't give up blender to go back to edit povray source code) but heck, I've got a whole activity laid out with four konsole windows for everything else including cropping and resizing of graphics (with ImageMagick), generating pdf and djvu (LateX, ghostscript, djvu-tools), writing (Vim), connecting to remote servers (ssh) and interacting with my google services (via googlecl).

Given my interest in the Live on the Command Line, I stumbled upon this article of Stephen Ramsay. There Stephen gave an example of a command line application for playing music. I was fascinated. Of course mplayer, mpg123, mpg321, alsaplayer and whatnot allows you to do this anyway, but still you have to specify a path and a filename (completion gets you far but not all the way). Wouldn't the system he described be just great? Well, yes of course it would. So... I set out programming one.

After rummaging around a bit I settled for Python as my current tool of choice and started coding. It all went very smoothly and after about sixty lines of code I had my first proof of concept. Of course I cheated: I used Amaroks mysql database of my music files. My collection is well maintained and so I had a good starting point.

And what does it do now?

I can type "play 'Teenage Dream'" for once and of course, it does just that, even updating the playcount in the database. I can type "play last" and again, it does just that, same for "play random". Not bad for a quick hack.

After that I augmented the search algorithm, allowing for LIKE matches and multiple choices for the found songs. It can search for a genre ("play genre:country"; I still have to implement a clever heuristic to distinguish between a genre and a title search) and it accepts a list of song titles on stdin.

That said, the codebase (all 106 lines of it) is dirt ugly, so it will be some time before I make it available. Until then I appreciate any input and thoughts on this subject.

Am Wochenende hatte "Zeit Online" die sid-Meldung über ein Spiel des BFC Dynamo im DFB-Pokal in die Rubrik "DDR" einsortiert (*BILDblog berichtete* http://www.bildblog.de/32300/auferstanden-aus-ruinen/) und heute läuft eine Nachricht über eine geplante Jupiter-Mission der Nasa, die dpa unter den Stichworten "USA/Raumfahrt/Astronomie" verschickt hatte, bei "Zeit Online" http://www.zeit.de/news-082011/4/iptc-bdt-20110804-144 31761426xml unter dieser Dachzeile: [image: Polen: Nasa schickt Sonde zum Gasriesen Jupiter] Nun ist die Nasa bekanntlich die amerikanische und nicht die polnische Weltraumbehörde, wie also konnte dieser Fehler jetzt wieder pass…

Ah: Die Nasa will auch mehr über Jupiters Magnetfeld nahe den Polen erfahren.

Allerseelen ist nicht nur ein Tag des Gedenkens, sondern auch ein Tag der Versöhnung zwischen Leben und Tod. Wenn wir durch die Gräberreihen schreiten und die Ruhestätten unserer Lieben aufsuchen, dann kommt uns, je inniger wir ihrer gedenken, umso deutlicher zu Bewußtsein: sie schlafen den ewigen Schlaf, ja, aber sie sind nicht tot, sie leben in unseren Herzen. Wenn wir durch die Gräberreihen schreiten und uns die Inschriften auf den Grabkreuzen und -steinen zu Gemüte führen, spricht viel Versöhnung zu uns, bisweilen auch mit einem leisen Lächeln. Fast auf jedem Friedhof findet man Grabinschriften, die meist ungewollt, bisweilen aber auch mit Voller Absicht, ihren ernsten Zweck mit einem heiteren Ton verbinden. Ein eifriger Sammler origineller Grabinschriften war Peter Rosegger, aus dessen literarischen Nachlaß die nachstehenden Proben stammen.

Hier liegt begraben mein Weib, Gott sei Dank, sie hat ewig mit mir zankt, drum, lieber Leser, geh von hier, sonst steht sie auf und zankt mit dir! (Hall in Tirol.)
