Oh my god this guy in this bathroom wearing a cowboy hat just greeted me with a "howdy brother" and I panicked and I said "yee haw"

‘ well, that’s … hm. ‘ he’s definitely not smiling. no, no. you’ve got it all wrong. ‘ it’s rare for a cowboy to come into a public bathroom, so i wouldn’t blame myself for reacting in an odd way. he probably found it … amusing, if anything. ‘ what a good thing that he can use his hat to hide his totally non-existent smile.

brenda’s intuition doesn’t betray her, but it’s beyond him to admit that. his anxiety, his panic, it’s never been something he could openly admit to other people. they’re part of the other side of the coin ; the one that’s hidden in nights spent choking on dry, tearless sobs, painful memories clouding his mind. but to stand straight in the middle of the day and admit that he’d love to lock himself in a bathroom stall instead of standing in front of more than fifty students? no, he can’t, he won’t. people need him and his insignificant problems shouldn’t stop him from doing his job or following his responsibilites. so, he takes a deep breath. dark eyes are still glazed over as he eventually dares to meet her eyes. he regrets it almost immediately.

an empty smile, a small laugh. ‘ it is not a puzzle, for once. i’ve been thinking of the past. i suppose i’m getting old, dwelling on memories ... remember when clark and me were as young as my students? ‘

( he did, in fact, not think of clark, but it’s a topic that should easily distract both her and him from the original point she was making. it’s been years, but sometimes, it still feels like yesterday. )

hershel layton is a man who’s went through a lot in his short life. and it is short—— what are thirty years, fourty years compared to a hundred, sometimes even more than that? he’s known love and he’s known sorrow, he’s known what it feels like to want to spend the rest of your life with but one person, and he’s found out what it feels like to lose that very person. he’s seen friends fall to their death ( because of him, because he failed—— ) and he’s saved countless people’s lives throughout his travels. if he were to think that the world is as black and white as some believe after all that, he’d be a very naive human being. but he isn’t. he knows that the other’s words hold nothing but truth. there’s no happiness without sadness, there’s no taking without giving. loss is inevitable, but sometimes, it makes us appreciate the things we have even more.

‘ wise words. they hold truth, but i believe that it isn’t always easy for us, as human beings, as people who experience pain, to accept that truth. we’ll see that peak again, we surely will—— but holding on until we do is a battle everyone fights for themself. ‘ he’s not necessarily refering to himself, no, he’s only musing, considering what he was told and making a thesis. it’s what you would expect from a professor.
