Sage Sohier chronicled the love of gay couples in the 1980s in her collection At Home With Themselves. Spurred by the AIDS crisis and the media representations of promiscuity and disease in the community, the project aimed to dispel stereotypes about gay love and showcase lesbian and gay couples of all ages, backgrounds and proclivities, capturing a visual that often went unseen.

“I was interested in how, as a culture, we weren’t used to looking at two men touching, and was struck by the visual novelty yet total ordinariness of these same-sex relationships. The visual ambiguity of same-sex relationships also intrigued me: were these sisters or friends or lovers or a mother and daughter?“

The photographic endeavor was also prompted by Sohier’s father. The book is dedicated to him and his partner Lee.

Please Read!

I’ve never made a post like this before, but my girlfriend really needs help. As a lot of you know, this year has not treated @aohkii well. Between being denied access to intensive treatment for her schizophrenia and complex post traumatic stress disorder, living in an abusive environment, being rendered the sole caretaker of her grandmother with cancer, forced to live out of a hotel room hundreds of miles away from her sole support network, and now being forced to repair or replace her laptop after receiving damage beyond her control, she really needs financial help. She has applied to multiple jobs in preparation for the school year, but everything relies heavily on her ability to receive intensive mental and physical care and medication, and access to her laptop which is essential to her career as an illustrator. Please help her get by, she has done nothing but give back to others and uplift marginalized people as a native two-spirit woman, she is the most caring, understanding person, please help her, I can’t think of a person more deserving.

Hey guys, this is seriously a big deal to me. I need serious mental and physical health care which requires time and money, I’m currently trying to support my grandma with stage three cancer in any way I can, I pay for my own medication and clothes and art supplies and food and groceries and toiletries and there’s upwards of a month where my refund check does not deposit into my bank account, leaving me with zero funds to live off of. I know that this year has been hard on me, and I’ve hard to turn to you all a lot, but if all of my followers just donated one dollar, or even just reblogged this once, it would change my life. I would be able to survive, think about replacing my laptop, get to the doctor and psychiatrist and seek steady therapy. This way, I could actually hold down steady employment, I could take my life back from trauma and abuse and neglect. I’m fighting not to become another schizophrenic csa survivor lost to the system of homelessness and poverty. I’m fighting really, really hard. Please, please help me. I’m reaching out to anyone, I’m doing everything I can. Seriously, a dollar, a reblog, five dollars, telling your favorite blogger about this post.
