Day 2: Observations

I got kind of distracted when I was working on something else and was like, Hey what if Marco had curly hair….oh he’d look cute with some glasses too.

…and here I am a few hours later with a fully colored portrait of curly hair glasses Marco

but okay, the glasses made me think of Hanji and I was like, what if in some AU Marco’s enthusiasm for the Military Police was replaced with like, a desire to learn about titans and he became Hanji’s little minion I thought that would be so cute, but yeah, my mind is everywhere right now

Marco likes to climb trees, look up at the stars through decades-old branches spreading far and wide, shimmy up past the birds’ nests and knots in the trunk.

His youngest sisters says: Why do you look at the sky so much, Marco?

His oldest sister says: Get down here and help me peel these potatoes.

But both of them are kind, and both of them pat his shoulder with a smile.

Jinae is a warm place, no matter how cold the snow is when it falls nor when water freezes in the porcelain bowl on the vanity.

Marco learns, spring after spring, that birds that fall out of the nest are usually abandoned; but sometimes, they might be replaced.

Flies swarm, and you count your heartbeats carefully. - First year. There are lies in your mouth about what happened to Krista, about how you don’t faint under duress; promise that you won’t fail. But the webs you consider weaving are badly constructed and weak, and you know it is not how you will succeed. - Top Ten. Someone once said that a dream is the reflection of the heart. Either to make oneself at ease by forgetting everyday cruelties, or perhaps to fall into an abyss that is harsher than reality. This evening the slumber that is going to be unfold is…

The cadets have just finished their training and return toward the barracks.

“The Garrison is over there. What are they doing?”

“They must be those who are off-duty tomorrow. They must be going out for drinks, right?”

Connie is the one who noticed those seniors who are far away from him. Reiner, who is beside him, is the one who pointed out where the seniors are going in Trost district.

“Hmm, how nice.”

While Connie is still looking at the seniors, Armin calmly speaks.

Actually we can dine-in at bars too, you know. In the past, there was a cadet who eventually married with a lady from a bar.

“How come you know such a rumor?”

By chance—I heard it when the instructor was gossiping.

“Hey, it’s not like that you know,” Jean suddenly cuts in.

“How should I say— isn’t it fun to have a drink after work ends? Right, Reiner?”

“Ah, maybe that’s true.”

On that day, the topic at the boys’ barrack is liquor.

In the past, the Garrison and MP used to drink plenty of liquor. Recently, we don’t see it often.

“It’s because of decreased portion in mankind’s territory. There is less land to grow ingredients and grain.”

As Eren and Armin say that, Connie replies in a jealous tone.

“But since it’s rare to get an off-day, of course it would be nice to go for a drink.”

As soon as Jean laughs, Marco smiles.

“But what will happen if everyone drinks as much as they like? I am interested to find out. If it’s Bertholdt, his drunken behavior might be unexpected—he might become talkative.”

After Marco finishes his words, the boy who has been silently listening, flusters and disapproves.

“Eh?! I- I won’t! Maybe.”

Everyone laughs at his reaction.

“Right, when we all become old men, let’s meet-up and have a drink! I will treat that guy who is in hurry to die (Eren), if he joins the MP. That is if he’s still alive by then~”

“Even without anyone treating me, I will earn more than Jean because I will exterminate all of the titans.”

“Hey, stop fighting.” Marco comes in between them. Everyone laughs.

“Even though our paths might be different in future…I wish that we will all stay alive and gather again.”

“Yea, sounds good.”

Reiner happily continues the conversation.

“Oi, give us one more bottle!”

The bar looks dim and hazy. Reiner is clamorously drinking (hobnobbing) with the fellow batch cadets. Everyone at once starts to cheer.

“Ok! Jean, sing~!”

“Ha! Don’t cower after listening to my beautiful voice, ok!?”

Red-faced, Jean sings with extremely good voice.

“Oi, Eren! Next turn is you! Transform into a titan!”

“Alright! Eh, is it alright to do it here?!”

Eren, who is shoulder to shoulder with drunken Connie, is suddenly taken aback and stops.

Reiner is having fun and becomes more cheerful.

Suddenly he says,“Oh? That kind of trick. We can also…”

After he says that, he looks for his friend from the same village as him.

“You can’t…”

An ice cold hand catches Reiner’s arm that is holding up the mug. That hand belongs to Bertholdt, who looks pale.

“As for us”

“Bertholdt?”

“We can’t drink this.”

Reiner hastily opens his eyes wide.

It is the middle of the night… The dawn is still far.

“Ugh…”

He hears groans coming out from Bertholdt, who sleeps near to him. He (Bert), who has bad sleeping posture, lets out suffering sounds.

“Sor…Sorry…”

“…!”

Toward his delirious mumbling, Reiner slightly trembles.

Right… we

Slowly, he lifts his body up. He watches his fellow batch cadets’ sleeping forms.

We can’t envision their future…

His eyes harbor sharp lights within.

“I am sorry…”

However, it’s like wanting to shake away the bond, which wants to cling on him. Reiner shakes his head and he falls into deep slumber.

Friendly reminder to all working artists or (especially) aspiring artists.

If a client says they can’t afford to pay you but you’ll get good exposure, one of two things is happening:

1. They are lying. They can afford to pay you, but they are choosing not to. They will pay the printer to print the books, they will pay the mail service to deliver them, and you’d better believe they’re going to pay themselves for sending you an email explaining that they can’t afford to pay you. They think you are a sucker, and if you take the job you’ll be telling them they are right.

2. They are not lying. They have zero budget, no audience and no real distribution system. They’ll still be paying the printer and mail service because people who work in those professions don’t work for free just because someone promises them a recommendation. But they aren’t paying themselves, they’re running on an incredibly small margin, and there’s a good chance they won’t exist as a corporate entity in a few years. Publishing your work with them will give you less exposure than putting it on tumblr or Instagram for free would. It will never lead to a paying job. 

If a client starts ranting about the “short-sightedness” of artists, or otherwise complains about artists in general in their opening offer to you, run. Run as fast as you would run if a blind date spent the whole of dinner ranting about how horrible your entire gender is. Yes, there are doubtlessly clients who’ve been screwed over by artists in the past, but the ones who complain about artists in general will not respect you, they will not treat you well. 

Working for free does not prove that you are passionate about something. It proves that you do not need to be paid for your work. How many doctors went into medicine because they are passionate about saving lives? Do you think any of them are asked to perform heart surgery for free?

No one will ever pay $50 for something if they can get something similar for $5. When you charge next to nothing for art that you’ve worked for hours on, art that required years of training to create, you are telling your client that it is worth next to nothing. They will remember that the next time they want to hire an artist.

People who are looking to exploit artists know that artists are hard on themselves. They know that most artists don’t think their work is good enough to charge top dollar. They know that artists have been told from the first day they started taking their art seriously as a career that they’ll never make any money off it, that it’s not a real job, that it has no value to society. They know how to push artists’ insecurities about their profession in order to convince them that that demanding fair compensation is unrealistic and uncooperative.

If you’re just desperate for a job in the arts, any job in the arts, give yourself a job. Start a webcomic, or give yourself illustration assignments that you post on social media regularly, create work for a gallery show even if you don’t have one yet, or make a book. Give yourself a job. If you’re going to work for free, you may as well be working for yourself, setting your own hours and following your own interests. Having original art with original characters and ideas in your portfolio, and making sure your art is visible online will get the attention of publishers who are actually looking to hire people for good jobs. Drawing a shitty comic for a defunct publisher based on someone else’s shitty ideas will not.

Protect yourself, because no one else will. Protect yourself, because no one else will. There are people lining up around the block to exploit you. Protect yourself because no one else will.

I’m super curious, I was looking through Marco art on Pixiv and I see a bit of Reiner/Marco speckled here and there, and I’ve also seen doujinshi being sold with Reiner/Marco, I was wondering if anyone knows how it got popular? Like I pretty much only see it in Japanese fanart, and these were made way before chapter 77 even came out so I was wondering where it came from lol. 

And I’m not asking this in like an “eww gross why does this exist” type of way, I am genuinely curious.

I think its because of the Smartpass AU story about Reiner and Marco being caught in the rain.  It was translated before chapter 77, but, we don’t know how long ago the story had been out in Japan.  You can read the story in english here.

Alternatively, they’re both popular characters so it was inevitable in a large fandom to ship the two together.
