Will give one (1) book. It's probably not even a good book, Gemma's just trying to maintain civility for his birthday.

Compared to previous well-wishes received, in the case of his niece, all sense of levity perishes quickly. There are old wounds that still haven't healed, burnt bridges that will never be rebuilt. And yet, in spite of all of the bad blood, John has still never forgotten that this is his dearly missed sister's daughter. That Gemma is family.

That allowances... exceptions, even... can still be made. Even if they no longer got along with one another as they had, so many years ago.

"Paid for that yerself, did ya?" Presented gift is met with scrutiny, rather than thanks. It stemmed from the lack of trust he felt towards his niece, and was fully intending on giving her a difficult time as a result. "Hope so. I ain't in th' mood to be bailing you out if you get nabbed."

" Happy birthday, Constie! " is all Harley says before blowing him a kiss, winking at him.

"Well, well, ain't that an interesting twist." Deciding to play along, he mimes 'grabbing' her blown kiss with a clench of his hand, smiling crookedly back at her. "Here I was thinkin' I was pass due for a thwack to the noggin for any of me past... transgressions." He's unable to pinpoint a specific time in which he may have caused the other offence, but for the moment, John thought it was best to go with a blanket apology.

"Cheers all the same!"

"Ha! Much obliged! With luck, I might live long enough to see another one." Provided nobody from his shockingly long list of enemies and adversaries decides to finally show up and chop his head off.

"Christ, I'm not too sure meself 'ow I'm managing to stay above ground." He was on the verge of calling it a fluke, only to realise that couldn't be the case. Not with how synchronicity tended to interfere in the business that was his life. Guiding him to places anew, at the exact moment that his help -- wanted or not -- was required.

"Do us a favour, yeah? An' keep this between us. I don't fancy letting 'alf of Gotham know that I'm still breathin' fer the moment."

What's this? The thieves are stopping by with wishes now? It says a lot, for the state of his own friend group, that another stranger would beat all of them to the punch with well wishes.

But then again, most of his so-called friends and good mates were dead.

"Cheers. Sounds like it's accurate for a change. Speaking of which, if you happen to 'ear anything else about me... mind lettin' me know?" Information was power, after all, and if loose lips were willing to yammer... he wasn't going to pass on the chance. "'Course, I'll make it worth yer while."
