A pause. Beans and..what? “Um. Not thanks, I’m fine.”

     "Are you sure?"

     He wanders over to the nearby cabinet, flinging open the doors to reveal the literal rows of cans. Of course, he did dine on typical meals when they were offered, but the Soldier was always prepared for the day in which rations would come to them once more. On this day, he would have beans and mini weenies for weeks. "I will gladly share with you, Miss Pauling!"

"Just got lost in thought, I guess." 

His mention of food reminds her that she’s quite hungry herself. “What’re you going to have? To eat, I mean.”

     "Beans and dicks!"

     Quite possibly the same thing Soldier ate everyday: beans with hot dogs, with slight altercations depending on the time of day and week. Such a meal typically involved the man shoveling the beans into the can of mini-weenies and eating the resulted mix. "Would you like some, Miss Pauling?"
