Been frequenting life drawing again at the Art house. This is a sample of the better of my efforts from the past 3 months. I'm getting better. Some proportions are a bit out though.. and need to draw faces, hands and feet more. I pretty much have butts and thighs down pat :P

Getting my Game on..

So I had a themed party to go to. It was "1987-1989". I racked my brain until I discovered the Nintendo Gameboy was first released on April 21st 1989. Thanks wikipedia. With the spark of creativity I grabbed a few boxes and set to work:

Everything is to scale. Constantly measuring. Maths sucks. Scale and ratio suck.

I was pondering how to great the indents where the buttons lie. I contemplated cutting out holes and making it step down, but then realised I was working with corrugated cardboard and could squish the corrugation. A large marble was perfect to work the cardboard without tearing the top layer.

A few buttons and speaker vents cut out it was looking great.

I originally intended it to be a box head.. but this would result in minimum manoeuvrability of my neck/torso and most importantly making drinking difficult, so I scraped the idea.

A trip to Bunnings for the closest spray paint I could find. The lightest grey they had was the dark one, except for a grey primer. The primer was matt so after a second coat I gave it a clear coat to match the gloss of the dark grey.

A few shoulder straps glued and taped on and it was done..

And my good self wearing it on the night.

This took me a couple hours every second night for like 2 weeks to complete. It was really hot (40°C) during and didn't feel like working on it most of the time.. But had I another week I would have put more detail in, like the lettering, small details on the d-pad, power light, an image on the screen and label on the cartridge on the back etc The design of how I wore it wasn't flawless either.. it tended to ride up on my neck (CARDBOARD CUTS!), flare out instead of sitting flush with my body and sitting down was awkward, but those are minor nuances and for the most part it was a great success with many kudos given, except for the woman who thought it was a calculator.. SERIOUSLY?! There were a few other cool costumes that night too, including these two English guys who came as separate Tetris pieces. I tip my hat to you sirs.

Some more lady butts since my last life drawing post. There's like 4-5 different women here. I love props. PROPS FOR PROPS. I don't know if I'm getting any better.. I have butts pretty much down pat though :P I have noticed that the closer I am to the model the larger my drawings are. I try drawing small, but it just doesn't work out like that haha. I just scribble in the shading too. Most of the time I don't know how much time I have left and a bit of shadow is better than none.

It's been a couple months, but I've been going pretty much every Monday night. Filling up on ramen, then sketching away with a cheeky house red to finish of my Monday night. I tried to draw a face on that last one.. she did kind of have a comical face, but yeah haha hilarious. I'm going to say it again and will continue to say it. I really do like drawing lady butts. Pretty much waist down just looks so great. Such great shapes and the pencil just flows and captures it pretty much perfectly.

Last monday's sketch sesh. She moved pretty quick, but she had a silk kimono dressing gown thing which was cool. Considering the frame of mind I was in, I'm happy with the effort. Also had the most amazing tofu ramen beforehand too. DELICIOUS.

I think I've said this before, bit I love this woman. Definitely my favourite to draw. She holds poses well, tells you how long she's holding them for and just has a decent figure which is just great to draw. I'm trying a bit with the hands and faces.. giving them a bit of definition rather than leaving it totally blank. Can't wait for tomorrow when I'll be going again. Missed last week due to being sick.

Was first drawings in new sketch book. A Lego Moleskin my sister got for my birthday last year (photo from when I got it). The pages are a lot thinner and have a smooth texture.. so not really ideal for sketching. But I have it, so I may as well use it.. She moved pretty quick, so they're a bit messy. She was pretty fit and had like a Ramona Flowers x soccer mum hair do, which was fun. Still can't do faces. I really need to do a study.

It's been awhile, but I've recently started going back to life drawing. I was totally in the zone last week and super happy with my work. Still can't draw faces or hands, but I'm slowly getting there.. I REALLY like drawing butts. The whole back lower torso/thigh area actually. The curves there are great and just fun to draw. I really like sketching this model too. I've drawn her a couple times now. She has some great poses. I've committed myself to make this a more frequent event. Whether I have someone to go with or not. An incentive is my favourite Japanese restaurant - Ichiban Boshi. Just up from the Arthouse, before I sketch I'll have dinner and I've made it a challenge to tick off all their ramen dishes. With winter coming, a hot bowl of ramen is the perfect dish for these chilly nights.

Sketch Club was at Rookwood Cemetary today.. They had an 'open day' on.. it was highly unusual. Didn't do much sketching.. it was too hot. Sat in the shade to draw St Michaels Chapel, then had a wander amoungst the graves where a sculpture walk "Hidden" was exhibitioned. If only the weather wasn't so hot, I would have loved to have drawn some of the huge greek mausoleums or some of the really old decorative headstones..

Sketch Club went to the Sando in Newtown for some FREE life drawing. Did an okay job. The last two I particularly like. I left before the final 20min pose.. It was almost 10pm and still had to drive home.. In comparison to the Arthouse, it lacks class. Not so much in the people that attend (or the models) but the venue itself. The Sando is sadly a bit run down and the only music is whatever is going on downstairs. The Arthouse has a nice 1920s ambiance. There are pub drink prices however.. but the main thing that irked me was the stickyness of the tables from all the drink spillage. Seriously wipe that shit up yo.

Sketch Club went to the Museum of Contempory Art on the weekend.. didn't do a great deal of sketching though, drawing other peoples work seems weird to me.. I haven't been to the MCA before, so I spent most of my time being a tourist and checking out the artworks. The Steve Irwin was in the quay too. Such a mean looking ship.

Sketch Club was at Australian Museum yesterday. Coincidently they had Deep Oceans exhibit. I was too fascinated by the specimens I forgot to take photos :| They had a few angler fish, viper fish, a chunk of colossal squid tentacle, some vent crabs and isopods.. Scribbled a couple things. Most of my time was spent walking around looking at stuff though. Did my usual walk around the city after. Bought vol 63 of One Piece, spotted a neat print book (adds to birthday wish list), then a few spots of graffiti caught my eye on the way home. I love the Banksy-esque girl with the pain bucket.
