kutner dialogue (and characterization?) guide
i'll preface this by saying that I don't really consider myself to be an expert when it comes to writing kutner, or any of the characters really, but these are things I try to keep in mind when writing kutner's dialogue. but tbh my only guideline is "can I hear kutner saying this?" and if the answer is yes then it's good enough for me
general
kutner has a tendency to blurt stuff out -- "Sorry, most dying patients don't like to - not that you're dying." -- and then correct himself (or dig himself deeper into a hole lol). he says things impulsively. (another example is in 4x07 ugly). intrerrupts people sometimes.
building on that, he is blunt. he seems to say what he thinks. he calls house a jerk, multiple times (although not in a very negative way), he calls foreman a hypocrite in the greater good. he can be confrontional when it matters.
he simply doesn't seem to have much of a filter.
he also uses pretty informal wording, compared to the other characters, anyway. he uses slang and euphemisms at times: "babes" for hot women, "sucker", "stud", he uses "y'know". trails off a bit. sometimes "kinda" instead of "kind of".
but he still is not all that informal, he speaks in full sentences and he can use more formal terms. there's a balance to it.
"wanna" instead of "want to". "what's" instead of "what is". "you got somewhere to be?" instead of "do you have somewhere to be?". "you okay?" instead of "are you okay?".
he sometimes stammers a bit, an "uhm" or "uh" here or there but not a lot.
in general a really casual tone. sometimes omits the leading pronoun: "paged you?" instead of "he paged you?"; "must be" instead of "it must be"; "could be" instead of "it could be".
doesn't curse all that much, actually. he says "oh crap" a few times when he's annoyed. swears with words like "ass" because this is TV. also, use "screw" instead of "fuck" but that's more a "the characters don't use 'fuck' like at all" thing. although I do think kutner would use "fuck" if the characters could say it. probably not in hospital settings, though.
characterization-related
first of all: nerdy. superstitious. will make reference to his interests, to superstitious stuff and conspiracy theories. also has a lot of knowledge about a lot of random stuff. tends to use weird house-like metaphors.
brash. punchy. genuinely cheerful and happy-go-lucky, although less as the show goes on. but he's not gloomy or outwardly depressed. but he's also... not always joyful.
he is curious and nosy! he asks questions, he will question things. he wants to know stuff. asks people (even house) if they're okay a fair amount. part of it is because he does care about people, obviously. he's gonna be especially nosy about things and people he cares about. he is kind and compassionate, deeply so(even if he doesn't always show it). he is even a bit protective of the people he cares about. he wants to help. but he can also care in a really detached way, like a doctor would. he seldom actually gets attached to patients. i do think he tries not to care, his default is kind of a genial apathy.
direct. observant. can read people very well and will often state his obervsations as fact, because they often are. he's never really wrong. but also can get a bit lost in his own head and distracted and miss out on the other characters' drama lol. but when he is paying attention, he is perceptive as hell. he'll also point out the things he observes when someone is annoying him.
he can also be quiet and keep his head down a bit. he has convictions and opinions, but he's not always gonna voice them. he also doesn't always take sides. however, if he does feel strongly about something, he *will* disagree and even argue about it. he has a spine, he can advocate for himself. he also just doesn't have that many hills he's willing to die on.
he shares unimportant stuff about his life like the fact that he renewed his subscription for national geographic to his coworkers, but won't often actually talk about more deeper things. he tries to relate to people by sharing stuff about himself, he does seem to struggle a bit with things he doesn't understand (like why would a soap opera actor hate his super cool job? why wouldn't he quit and find what he wants to do if he's feeling stuck?).
he just... doesn't really open up. when he does, he never really lingers on it either, he talks about it in a simple, shallow manner (yes, his parents were killed in front of him, but he got over it; yes, he was the indian foster kid in a white family, but he loved standing out).
he does care about... appearing a certain way, despite acting like he doesn't care what people think of him. he wants to be Liked, he wants to seem Happy, doesn't care all that much about things like "being right" but will get somewhat defensive when people think he's made a mistake. he does maybe want to appear somewhat as a Hero, too.
he doesn't get actually angry often, but he does have a bit of a... short fuse, is tetchy. he can get *annoyed* pretty easily, frustrated (this isn't really a dialogue thing, but he tends to rolls his eyes when he does get miffed). when he is angry, he seldom actually yells. he will get a bit in people's faces, though, but he is able to calm himself down. can also be petty. he also doesn't really get sad, but he does get despondent, numb, quieter than usual. but he just rarely lets things get to him.
kind of avoidant. if he doesn't like someone/doesn't want to be around them, it's obvious because he will find ways to avoid them. he won't outright say "I don't like you" but he's unsubtle in this way, he doesn't need to.
makes jokes! when things are serious, he doesn't really, but he probably will in low-tension situations. for example, he will say "honey, I'm home!" when digging up a grave. (see also: him in "don't ever change" being like "congratulations on your wedding, you have a rare and incurable degenerative disease!" to a patient who won't remember it because he's joking around with taub. again, less so in s5). he's sarcastic, he's teasing, really playful sometimes. his teasing isn't really intended to come across as mean-spirited for the most part, but he can come across like that a bit. he can be kind of insensitive that way.
how do I put this... kutner's kind of horny in a very boyish nerd way. he finds people attractive, he calls women he finds hot "babes", of course there's the famous "amber's legs go all the way up to canada" thing. there's also a scene in "don't ever change" where he's immediately interested when he thinks the patient said the word "sex". he's kind of silly about it. but he can get somewhat sheepish when actually discussing these things, he tends to use innuendos and trail off, ya know.
seemingly very open with his feelings. he's way more repressed than he lets on, but he's also... if he likes someone, he's probably gonna say it. he calls taub his friend, it's pretty clear to see that he cares about thirteen and he likes house and finds him funny as hell. he grew to like amber and says so himself. he's generally open about his affections and friendly with most people.
he tends to scheme a bit but rarely with malicious intent, but honestly, he doesn't really play 4D chess all that much. his second opinion clinic wasn't really about trying to be malicious or screw with house. it was just. something he did without thinking of the consequences, he did genuinely think he'd get away with it.
if it's not obvious: impulsive! risk-taker! a doing "whatever it takes" kind of guy. he also dpes sometime do things without much reason besides thinking it'd be fun, to distract himself.
this is more an implied thing but he does seem to stew and dwell on things. he doesn't really seem to actually let go but acts like he does. he feels guilt for things he did more than a decade ago (bullying), as a kid. he's more conscious about the impact his actions have on other people than he lets on, even if he's impulsive. he feels very intensely, he can hold grudges and feel betrayed.
he's way less trusting than he appears to be. he wants to believe in people and be optimistic and idealistic, but I think he does struggle with it.
he loves kids but is probably more awkward around them than, say, chase. in theory he probably thinks he likes teenagers but the few times they have teenage patients he doesn't seem that interested in them (besides the patient in emancipation, and we know how *that* turned out). he is drawn to damaged people similar to himself (the aforementioned patient, and nicole in birthmarks, who was adopted like him) and arguably to do-gooders, nice people (the patient in "big baby" -- while he didn't exactly connect to her, he did seem to like her).
again. he is a dork, he is a nerd. quirky and awkward but still very social, even if he probably doesn't have as many close friends as he lets on. he makes a bunch of pop culture reference and references to his interests, he believes in supersititions and probably in aliens and bigfoot. his first line in the show is about a conspiracy theory.
ADDITIONS
more ambitious and competitive than you'd think, but he doesn't want to be perceived that way exactly. he kind of tends to put himself in the slacker box, he cares but doesn't really show it. but, while he enjoys playing the game for the fun of it, but he is playing to win, too. he's not as easy-going as he appears to be. (i mean. he is. but yknow).i've talked about kutner and perception at length so I'll just link this post.
he loves diagnostics! he loves medicine! he's wanted to be a doctor since he was 8! much like house, he loves the things he finds interesting. if it's new, it's interesting, also.
Romance
i've already covered how kutner's kind of horny generally and Likes Girls but to talk about actual romance: pretty proactive, if that makes sense. he asks people out! he seems to go after what he wants, right? he does probably wait sometime after amber is fired to actually ask her out (and wilson beats him to it), though, even if he probably liked her before that.
at the risk of repeating myself: uses Innuendos, slang, trails off instead of actually outright saying what he means yk. depends on the context and the person, he can be pretty sheepish or bold when discussing sex. kind of a 14 year old boy about it.
when talking about relationships in 5x15 unfaithful (related to whether foreteen should stick it out or break up; kutner is of the opinion that they shouldn't break up because house is just jerking them around and will bring foreman back): "I don't think they're easy. That's why I think if you find something that could be good, you should hang onto it."
aka while he knows that they aren't easy, he seems to believe that if a relationship has the potential to be good, you should stick it out. it makes sense for kutner, I think, to have this opinion. something to keep in mind if you want to write him in a romantic relationship?
Familial
in simple explanation his parents call him Lawrence, not by any nicknames. he also seems to have called them them mr and mrs kutner (instead of julia and richard, as they kept telling kutner to call them) until the age of 9 when he switched to "mom" and "dad".
cryptozoology
---
"You don't actually --"
"I don't 'what'?" Kutner asked.
"You actually believe in Bigfoot." It was meant to come out like a question, like a hopeful question to which the answer would be a definitive no, but instead Amber had uttered it out like a statement. That she hoped wasn't true but knew it was.
prepare me for landing
And maybe things really are looking up, Kutner thinks as he gazes out the bus window.
or: What if Kutner was the one that picked up House from that bar and got on the bus with him?
this is kind of a mess and also my attempt at writing something with kutner and cameron since I do actually think they could be friends but cameron doesn't actually feature in this lol and it's not actually a story about them being friends but yknow
---
Kutner hears a lot of things about doctor Cameron before he ever gets to properly meet her.
I've said this before but I do think it's interesting how in Ugly amber and kutner are two of the characters who change their appearance because they're being filmed. they aren't the only ones to change their behaviour because of the cameras, though -- nearly every character does, but house points it out as a joke with the both of them:
I think amber is trying to look even more feminine. she's wearing a different, and I'd say more provocative, shade of lipstick. kutner, on the other hand, properly buttoned up his dress shirt and even put on a tie!
for amber it does make sense with what we know of her so far -- she's someone who who is overly performative, someone who will do whatever it takes to get ahead, including trying using her femininity to what she wants, with mixed results.
but it's really interesting that kutner appears to actually care about the way he is perceived, too. from the moment we meet him, kutner stands out because of how he does not dress the way you'd expect a doctor to, he is wearing jeans and hoodies and shirts and t shirts, making him stick out next to most of the other male characters. he is even worse at dressing formally than house, he is childish and boyish. he seems like a happy-go-lucky genial slacker, like someone who doesn't care much about how people see him and is just along for the ride.
although, as we see, that's not really true. kutner is actually someone who cares deeply -- about people, about medicine, about the job. I think he normally dresses the way he does because he knows he can get away with it, because he knows house doesn't care and it's really not something that would help him win one of the fellowship spots.
but he is aware of how he should dress, and this is the only episode where he does make the effort to try to look professional, to dress for the job ("I always wear ties, I'm a doctor."), to look like a doctor, because of the cameras being there. while amber's performatively feminine, kutner is being performatively professional, or at least trying to be.
and the thing is, amber and kutner, especially the former, are both characters who get compared to house a lot. but house is someone who cares about his job, not because he is ambitious, but because of what the job can get him -- puzzles, analysis, mysteries. he, most of all, cares about being right, and not the job title.
meanwhile, kutner wanted to be a doctor since he was 8, and as I've said, cares about being perceived as one (some of his main motivations for wanting the job are indeed the puzzle and the fun but it's not only about that for him); amber, of course, also cares about the job and its prestige, about what the job can get her.
both amber and kutner care about how they're perceived, and are ambitious in a way that I think is one of the main differences between them and house.
in Kutner's obituary, it's basically said that he was a specialist in sports medicine and PM&R/physiatry. and, well, one can wonder why kutner would choose this specialty.
So, why?
i've seen people say that this specialty seems out of character for Kutner, that it's arbitrary and doesn't fit him, and I tended to agree, at first. But thinking about it, I think you could make a case that it does fit Kutner, at least in some ways.
First of all, rehabilitation is the process in which one helps a person achieve the highest level of function, independence and quality of life possible. With rehab, you cannot reverse the damage done by illness nor injury, but you can restore the person to optimal health and function. It is not diagnosing, nor curing a disease or undoing its damage -- merely making do with what you have, treating the symptoms in lieu of a cure. (Meanwhile, the subspecialty of sports medicine deals in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries sustained in sports and any sort of exercise.)
Kutner is someone who, similarly to house, is drawn to what he finds interesting -- puzzles, games, analysis. Kutner is also someone who has gone through a lot of trauma in his early childhood, seeing his parents killed in front of him as a 6 year old. he is damaged, but is dismissive of it, claiming that it took him years but he learned that that is just how the world was. He is fine, he says, he loves standing out. He finds comfort in fandom and video games and any sort of distraction.
Kutner is someone who does not deal with the root cause of his issues, with his 'disease', for lack of a better term. He represses it, removes himself from the hurt, often appears to be pretty detached from life. He deals with the 'symptoms', but doesn't bother to self-analyze, 'diagnose', burries any negative feeling he has deep and claims he is fine.
He is someone who also... does make do what he has, I think. For example, Kutner's first episode, The Right Stuff, he is the one that suggests they get the patient drunk to test her liver because they cannot do any actual tests on her as she won't consent. Time and time again, he seems to know how to make the most of the resources he has. He tells Taub that it's people like him who don't commit suicide, since he has nowhere to go but up, which I think goes in tandem with his general way of trying to make the best with what he has.
Second of all, I can see why kutner would pick this specialty, and why it was probably not a very great choice for him, even so. Kutner is, fundamentally, a deeply good-hearted and kind person. He is someone who deeply cares about people, so it makes sense that he'd want to pick a specialty that is about improving someone's quality of life, and just in general, helping people.
I can also see why he'd end up applying for a fellowship that is so deeply removed from physiatry -- Diagnostics. It's honestly kind of striking, how far removed diagnostics is from Kutner's specialty. In House's department they take a lot of risks in diagnosing and treating the patient without a lot of regard for the patient's quality of life, which would probably be so different in comparison to the field of physiatry(which, I think, would add another layer to Kutner sometimes being opposed to House and standing up to him when he thinks House is wrong. He is willing to take risks, but wants to be sure beforehand, he is concerned about the patient's quality of life and is more willing to do tests. See also how, while it was highly dangerous and impulsive both times, his shock paddles incidents were because he knew that if he waited too much to shock the patients back to life they would get brain damage.). Diagnostics is also something that Kutner seems to be way more drawn to than I can ever imagine him being to PM&R.
So I can absolutely see Kutner picking this specialty, out of his caring for patients and their quality of life, but somewhere along the way finding himself.. maybe bored with it, and so that would be probably why he ended up applying for the House fellowship.
would kutner have become the next head of diagnostics if he hadn't died?
(probably not! and becoming the head of house's department isn't a good thing as some people make it out to be)
sometimes I'll see takes such as "if kutner hadn't killed himself, he would have been house's successor", and while i love kutner and I do think had his actor remained on the show he would have become house's protegé, he wasn't gonna become the head of diagnostics. and well, I can't see it as being a happy ending for him, either, if it had happened.
all the times kutner got fired during the hiring games arc, a compilation
because holy molly is it a lot
The Right Stuff (4x02)
-> he tattles on Amber for writing down the patient's data on her PDA (he saw the lab values) (he seemingly kept track of her, probably out of pettiness after she had pointed out earlier that he set that woman on fire) and house fires him for it because he hates tattletales. he's number 6 at this point.
-> he turns over his number plate and attempts to try to get back in the competition as number 9 and lies, badly, about it. House fires him again but he gets unfired when he manages to come up with an idea on how to test their patient (aka, get her wasted).
97 Seconds (4x03)
-> he gets fired alongside all the other members of the men's team for breaking the rules, but because of Amber (who goes to Chase to run one more test), she gets herself (and the rest of the men's team) back in the competition.
(sidenote: this is also the episode where Kutner earns the nickname "Overly Excited Former Foster Kid")
Guardian Angels (4x04)
-> he does not get fired in this episode.
Mirror, Mirror (4x05)
-> he does not get fired in this episode, although Amber bets 500 dollars on him getting fired (prompting him to bet a 1000 dollars on her getting fired).
He does make a mistake that could have potentially cost him the job (forgetting to mention that the patient did actually say something that wasn't him copying Kutner), but no one gets fired because House and Chase rigged the betting pool.
Whatever It Takes (4x06)
-> he does not get fired this episode.
Ugly (4x07)
-> he does not get fired in this episode.
You Don't Want To Know (4x08)
-> House fires Kutner at first because he thinks the magician's case is not a real case, but unfires him after it turns out that actually, the patient really is sick.
-> In one of the last scenes of the episodes, Cole, his friend, puts him and Amber on the firing block, but neither is fired and instead, Cole is. It turns out that he had made a deal with Cuddy, who wanted Kutner fired due to him being a liability (setting a patient on fire and all).
Games (4x09)
House "fires" him and Thirteen but as they're put on the spot, they manage to come up with more ideas so he undoes it. In the end, he keeps his job.
So --
Number of times he got fired: 5
voltner/kutthroat (amber/kutner) propaganda because I think they have potential (and they would be so fun and sweet and they have things in common):
featuring a picture of them in the same scene
(this also turned into a post about their similarities. oops.)
CANONICALLY, kutner shoot his shot with amber, and it's sort of implied that she only said no because she was dating wilson.... (literally shaking my fists at the sky at all times because we didn't get to see him asking her out. and like imagine an AU where kutner asks her out first and she says yes!!!!)
GREG HOUSE: Ampicillin for the UTI. [hands the folder back to THIRTEEN] Shiny cast for the leg. [to all] You guys know Wilson's dating Amber? [Foreman and Taub look up immediately in surprise. Kutner, at the pantry, doesn't budge.] ERIC FOREMAN: No. CHRIS TAUB: Wilson and Amber? LAWRENCE KUTNER: I knew. [House looks at Kutner, quizzically. Stirring his coffee, Kutner walks to the glass table.] LAWRENCE KUTNER: I asked her out. Said she just started seeing someone.
GREG HOUSE: [to Kutner] I thought Amber scared you guys. LAWRENCE KUTNER: She does. But she also has legs that go all the way up to Canada.
GREG HOUSE: Or... sodium was absorbed by a toxin already in her system. [to Kutner] Was it just the legs? Or did you detect something resembling a soul? LAWRENCE KUTNER: [amused] She grew on me. If there's a toxin in her, could be carbolic acid. [clarifying] I'm talking about the patient now.
– Don't Ever Change (s4e12)
I think their personalities would go really well together, actually. at first, it seems like an opposites attract situations, with amber being this really ambitious cutthroat person and kutner being this nerdy genial slacker, but they are actually similar in some ways. you could say that they are two sides of the same coin, which you can also see through the contrast in how house treats them.
to keep it short, they both care very deeply about the patients, about the job. Amber's line about "Trying not to care" is something I could easily see Kutner thinking too, y'know?
they are both competitive, although it's really not as noticeable with kutner. out of everyone, they were the ones most willing to play games and do whatever it took to win the job and really seemed to care, although in kutner's case it was also because he was a bit nuts already (like they were the ones constantly asking house about the job, for example amber being interested in the challenge in you don't want to know, and kutner focusing on the game and the points system.)
they also both care about how they are perceived and put a front. kutner wants to stand out, claims he likes being different and wants to be known for anything but being the adopted indian kid whose parents were murdered. amber, in turn, is performatively feminine and aggresive, and thought her whole life that she had to choose between love and respect, and she chose respect.
what i'm trying to say is that you could do sooo much with their similarities (and the way they differ). them recognising themselves in the other, and having feelings about that. also with the way they both mirror house in some ways
ANYWAY. They do *not* like each other at first, with Kutner's shock paddles incident number 1 in the right stuff, amber tattles on him, then kutner tattles on her because he seemingly kept track of her and noticed that she wrote down the patient's lab values on her PDA even though house told them not to. honestly i just think its funny that it was a case of annoyance at first sight for them.
they could totally be frenemies/rivals to friends to lovers, is what i'm saying!!!
similarly in 97 seconds, kutner lies about the men's team already having a diagnosis because he does Not want her there lol (and then amber calls all the men idiots). in guardian angels, similarly he's not a fan of the fact that she was 3 hours late for the grave robbing lmao.
in mirror, mirror, HOWEVER, kutner changes his tune. he seems to enjoy her presence now, at the very least, he likes teasing her. he's grinning as he tells her that she's the favorite... to get fired. and both amber and kutner bet on each other to get fired lol (amber bets 500 on kutner who bets a 1000 on amber pffft).
later they have a scene where they're both with the patient, and kutner does tell her that if the patient was mirroring amber "he'd be inflicting pain on someone else" but it doesn't feel like they have the same animosity as before. like from now on their interactions feel less them disliking each other and more like banter.
LIKE you can absolutely interpret kutner and amber in mirror, mirror as him picking on the girl he likes. he's grinning ear to ear, he's basically pulling her hair on the playground.
but like i would say that they're friendlier with each other from now on, they're arguably even sharing jokes!!! amber grew on him!!! like i would say that out of everyone, kutner and thirteen had kinder feelings towards amber than the rest.
in you don't want to know it's kinda... shown? in a silly way, anyway, that kutner's kinda attracted to her. like through... *whatever this is*. kutner ilu but you're so bad. at. flirting???
they don't have much interactions in games but like. as i said, imagine him seeking her out after she gets fired, going up to her to comfort her or ask her out. imagineeeee
also just. they're the two characters who die in canon. they're DoomedTM. the two people who house couldn't save. the two who haunt house. imagine them "saving" each other from their canon fates, one way or another, through befriending each other and even becoming a couple.
like at the risk of repeating myself, you could do soo much with them. them recognising the things they have in common. them respecting each other's competitiveness and willingness to play games and do whatever it takes. them having banter. them eventually opening up to each other. amber and kutner being honest with each other in a way that they're not with most people.
ALSO. in wilson's heart:
"THIRTEEN": We should say good-bye. CHRIS TAUB: She didn't even like us. LAWRENCE KUTNER: We liked her.
i swear kutner's "We liked her." lives in my head rent free. when I say that in canon 13 and kutner were two of the ones who had kinder feelings towards her, this is what I mean. they were friends :(((
conclusion: they could have had such a fun dynamic and be really sweet together. and also kiss!!! <3
your eyes are always glued to me
Sometimes, when Kutner thinks that Amber doesn’t see him, he’ll glance at her — stare, really — and look away as soon as she glances back. She wishes that if he really had to stare at her, he’d be more subtle about it. Or at least, not look away.
wanted to write something silly about amber and kutner, accidentally wrote something sad(i think). oh well.
there's nooo way i am finishing this today so you only get this for now (since i kinda like it)
---
1.
After work, after the test-that’s-not-really-a-test in which House had convinced number 18 — Cole — to participate, in which Cole had, allegedly, gotten drunk for like the first time ever, Kutner offers to drive him home, since they’ve already sort of gotten to know each other, setting a patient on fire and all. We’re basically friends now, Kutner tells him as he puts his hand on his shoulder and looks at him with a large grin on his face. Cole doesn’t oppose his declaration of friendship, though, for what it’s worth.
in the moonlight
After Kutner finds out that Cole schemed with the dean of medicine, who, by the way, considers him a liability and wants him fired, he goes to (not) think on the rooftop. Amber lingers there, too.
You Don't Want to Know coda fic (i think?). Kutner & Amber are there. I meant to write something else but stumbled upon an older version in my drafts and spent the whole day on it. Oops. 1,3k words.
families
(the guy who ships amber and kutner wrote about them. fork found in kitchen. I might clean this up and edit it more, eventually. kutner kind of tells amber about his uhh past because i was thinking of how he'd tell her about it, and how she'd react? not a lot of plot, just vibes; 1200~ words)
electricity!
Kutner shocks the patient in Mirror, Mirror back to life, and knocks himself out in the process.
(726 words)
rewatch posts are kind of on the back burner. indefinitely. I'm in a weird place mentally (although, when I am not?) but I do want to continue them in the future! But I really can't at the moment! ^_^
