Chapter 3: If I Try to Touch These Hidden Things - Part 1

The chapter opens back in the underground room, in another break in Nezumi’s storytelling. Shion’s face is half in shadow, half in lamplight, and Nezumi can’t read his expression. Nezumi turns up the lamplight.

Shion asks if Nezumi had come back with Maura, then, but Nezumi says no. The world doesn’t always work out the way people want it to, and Nezumi had been too optimistic. Shion teases him for daring to be an optimist, then stands up from the bed and turns up all the lamps, bathing the room in light. Before coming here, Shion explains, he hadn’t known how to light a lamp—he hadn’t even seen one before. Nor had he been used to their low light, either, and he had strained his eyes while reading when he had first come here. But thanks to that experience, he had come to learn that light and darkness can coexist and intermingle in the same room. The light doesn't eradicate the darkness, and the darkness envelops the light.

Sitting down next to Nezumi again, he asks what Nezumi is hiding from him. Nezumi asks in return if he seems like he’s hiding something, and Shion replies, in a quiet but steady voice: very much so.

Still uncertain about opening up to Shion, Nezumi gives a showy shrug and says he’s not done with his story yet. Shion silently stares into the middle distance, where the light of the lamps doesn’t quite reach, then whispers that he wants to see those white flowers bloom out of the barren ground, so badly he can hardly stand it. He asks Nezumi if the sight was beautiful.

Very beautiful, almost like wandering into Wonderland, Nezumi replies.

Shion’s face lights up with a carefree smile, and he says he’s glad that Nezumi had been able to experience such beautiful sights. He laments how Nezumi has experienced so many horrors throughout his life that Shion couldn’t—no, didn’t even try to—imagine.

Nezumi quietly contemplates the horrible things he’s experienced: death, blood, all-consuming flames. Falling walls. A crowd beneath a balcony. And he’s witnessed new horrors he has yet to tell Shion about.

He tugs at Shion’s hair, eliciting an ow!, then says he’s seen a myriad of things in his life, and not all bad. Many have been beautiful as well.

Shion, leaning in closer, asks what kinds of beautiful things, and Nezumi thinks, six years ago, I saw you. He remembers Shion screaming out into the storm, window thrown open wide. Witnessing that miracle had made a feverish feeling bubble up inside Nezumi that he still doesn’t know what to call—not simple surprise or joy, but something else entirely. He had felt like he was being told that it was okay for him to live. It was so beautiful, Shion. I saw something so beautiful that day, he thinks.

Shion presses him for an answer again, and Nezumi stands up in front of him.

“Want to see it?” Nezumi asks. 

“What?” A momentary flash of confusion appears in Shion’s eyes.

“Want to go see beautiful, unfamiliar sights?” he asks again.

“You mean like all those white flowers blooming at once?”

“I do.”

Shion’s eyes sparkle. “I do want to go,” he says. “I want to see it for myself.”

“Let’s go then. It’s a promise.” Nezumi says.

“A real promise?”

“Of course. Completely real—pinky swear it,” says Nezumi. “Or instead….” He leans in and gives a little smile. “Does the lofty Chairman wish to seal it with a kiss?”

Shion looks up, gaze sharp. “You’ll grant my wishes, then?”

“Of course,” Nezumi agrees. “I’ll grant you anything you desire and obey anything you command. I am at your service, Your Excellency.” 

“I don’t need a kiss or a pinky swear,” Shion says, grabbing Nezumi’s arm. “I don’t need anything but your promise—that’s enough for me.”

Shion seeks assurance from Nezumi that it’s okay to trust him in this—trust that they’ll go see the flowers together. Nezumi grabs his wrist and pulls him in close, knowing that what Shion is really asking is if Nezumi has the resolve to follow through on what he’s promised. When he lets go of Shion’s wrist, warmth lingers on his fingers.

Nezumi explains that he knows very little about the conditions under which those white flowers bloom, and Shion says that’s fine—it means all they have to do is wait for them to bloom. To wait for a miracle, you mean? asks Nezumi, and Shion says yes. They can camp out by the spring until they bloom, no matter how long it takes. Shion’s confident it’ll all be just fine because Nezumi will be there with him. Nezumi jokes that his confidence is baseless, and Shion asks if he wasn’t actually serious about the invitation. Nezumi says no—he’s completely serious. Nezumi thinks privately: Let’s go, Shion, somewhere that isn’t No.6. I’m the only one who can set you free from everything that’s keeping you in bondage.

Shion and Nezumi joke back and forth, and Shion’s smile reminds Nezumi of Hekiseki’s. Shion tells Nezumi how excited he is to go see the flowers, and starts hatching travel plans. Once the playful banter is over, Shion asks Nezumi if he thinks anything else is going to happen like what’s been going on these past few days. Nezumi fires back, saying he knows Shion isn’t so naive to believe that nothing will—the events of the past few days are simply the prologue to more. Shion, bluntly and decisively, says he won’t let anything else happen—he’ll simply stop the disturbances and secret plotting before it escalates further. Nezumi, sitting down on the sofa, quips that that’s a lot more dangerous than a wasteland camping trip.

Shion asks him to continue his story, asking how long he had stayed in No.4. Nezumi explains that it had been just a few days while Maura and company prepared for the journey to No.6. They weren’t allowed to stay longer than that—though they used to stay for months—because for reasons intimately tied to No.6’s collapse, No.4 had started to become more strict about Maura’s group specifically, no longer allowing them to freely roam the city. 

Shion asks if he thinks if No.4 is planning to take a shot at No.6. Nezumi replies that he can't even begin to guess at the answer to that question, but he didn’t think No.4’s mayor was trying to land-grab. One wrong move and it’d end badly for him and the carefully maintained equilibrium between the six cities. If conflict, no matter how small, erupted between any of the cities, it would spell humanity’s extinction, and everyone knew this, citizens and leaders alike. This careful balance was also why the six cities had historically maintained a strict non-interference policy, even when another city collapsed like No.6 had. Thus, it was difficult to believe that No.4 would act so boldly against No.6—the other cities and No.4’s citizens would not allow it. No.4’s mayor, who had been in politics for a long time, had very little to gain by putting his city at risk by making moves on another.

Not even No.6 had ever done such a thing, only caring about controlling its own internal workings, not other cities. By closing itself off with walls, it had become a perfect totalitarian state, carefully and deliberately constructed—no one looking from outside could see in, while it did whatever it wanted inside. The rare few who fought back were simply taken out of the picture. 

Nezumi shifts his gaze to Shion, the man at the head of No.6. He wonders if people will be able to take back their silenced voices now that the walls are down. Is people being able to voice their opinions without fear what Shion wants? No.6 had stolen that away because people with opinions and desires can’t easily be forced into a cage of control. Shion, what will you do, he wonders. Will you make anew this mess of a world? Or will you go down the path of No.6’s former mayor, taking ultimate power into your own hands? Such a future was entirely possible, if unlikely, and yet it crosses his mind anyway. To be thinking of such things must mean Nezumi is more prone to flights of fancy than he thought he was.

Shion asks how many were in the group smuggled from No.4 and what their goal was, needing to confirm if they were involved in the recent fires and murders. He also asks what had happened to Maura’s group. Nezumi, lost in thought as he is, doesn’t answer immediately, and Shion asks what he was thinking about. 

Nezumi deflects the question, saying they should wait for their guests to arrive before he continues his story. Shion is surprised—guests? Nezumi turns up the lamplight as someone fussed with the other side of the unlocked door, and the little mice disappear into the darkness above the bookshelves.

My uncle is really into warhammer and would win every miniature painting competition he was in. I have not very steady hands and he saw me messing up my nail polish for prom. He sat with me and carefully painted my nails and that moment meant so much to me all these years later.

supermarkets cutting prices isn't proof that competition makes capitalism serve ordinary people. it's true that firms fighting for customers can make some goods cheaper, but you can't turn one possible effect of competition into an explanation of what the whole economy is organised to do

capitalist competition makes each company defend its position against the others. sometimes that means lowering prices, or it can mean cutting staff, holding down wages, squeezing farmers and suppliers, reducing the quality or size of goods, or abandoning places where shops aren’t profitable enough. it produces different results depending on what's most profitable. it doesn't guarantee cheap food and other necessities, and it certainly doesn't guarantee them at a price everyone can afford

it's not like there will never be problems with supply or that costs stop mattering under socialism, but socialism changes which problem society’s set up to solve. instead of structuring the economy around businesses making profits, we plan production around feeding people and using society's resources where they can do the most good. that won’t look perfect in every real situation, but it puts social need in command rather than leaving it as a side effect that appears only when it suits capital

For anyone into North Asian and Central Asian folk music, there's this incredible Siberian folk-pop band called Otyken! The group is mostly women and they're from multiple indigenous groups in Siberia, with songs being sung in their range of different languages. They're so much fun and their music videos are amazing!

you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.

first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.

now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:

in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.

and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.

and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.

it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:

• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.

• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.

• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.

• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.

• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.

• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.

and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.

what i'm asking:

if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.

if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.

india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.
