having read some Martha Wells interviews it does really tickle me to imagine that when Murderbot asks for a ride, ART is basically doing that thing where you decide to entertain an obvious scam artist for a bit. Like, "Well, this is most likely a corporate spy, but I guess I am spying back on corporates right now so sure LOL let's see what the humans told it to do to trick me"

And then said 'corporate spy' spends 8 straight hours curled up on a chair watching TV and ART is like, "Oh shit you're like, a real person with no agenda. Let's hang out actually"

murderbot has Protagonist Disease so its by nature constantly becoming entangled with other people who are also insane and fascinating. which makes sense because what normal person would end up hanging around with this freak. but like. iris is a Protagonist right. her family secretly are like, fucking freedom fighters who raised a fuckin ultra machine intelligence. do you get me. do you get me

Something I do find lovely about the first 4 Murderbot Diaries books (can’t yet speak on all of them) is:

Murderbot chronically finding new scientists/travellers to claim as “clients” (whether paid or not) like one of those sheepless herding dogs that goes around finding sheep (or anything else they can herd like a flock of sheep). Like it clearly has a protect humans instinct and a desperate need for enrichment.

Given its general lack of self awareness and unreliable narrator status, there’s no way in hell Murderbot is aware it’s doing this.

I saw this as "what Murderbot has is one skill set- security consultant- so it uses that as a job/cover/excuse/any way it can to get what it wants", but I like your version a lot more. When I re-read, I'm going to keep an eye out for Murderbot making excuses for its "herding instincts"

Just thinking back, one of the biggest, most blatant, most "can't believe I missed it" examples is right at the beginning of the whole series- Murderbot is free. It says it kept doing its job because it didn't want to raise suspicions and get caught and recycled. But it's never at all clear how the company tracks SecUnits, and it seems entirely plausible Murderbot could have hacked its ID to show up as undergoing maintenance or something and found a quiet box to sit and watch Sanctuary Moon in. But it had a need to, you know, find some idiot humans to herd instead of box-rotting.

Friends, lovers, countrymen - this is a long overdue reminder that I have a humor side blog (because a long time ago I became a weirdo freak about my original blog’s aesthetic and this blog started off for funny text posts I didn’t want cluttering up my beautiful blog)
