Carrie shrugged. “It’s okay. I don’t like listening to music much. I mostly just read.” She rubbed the corner of her eye. “I’m sure. I really like the music I listen to, though. It’s meditative, it’s nice. I don’t like music that’s too loud.” That was true. Music that was too loud sounded like the devil was raining down, or something. Something like that. She smiled at Jared.

“Well...would you be open to hearing some new stuff? I can put together some nice, quiet songs for you to listen to. Not to brag or anything, but I have great taste in music.” Jared started piecing together a playlist in his head. He didn’t know Carrie very well, sure, but he had some ideas about what she may like.

Carrie smiled back at him. “Oh, you’d better not spoil it for me!” That was one advantage of having no one want to interact with her. She could read whatever she wanted to read and remain spoiler free. Of course, most of the books and things that Momma would allow, no one read. Most of the things that Momma wouldn’t let her read, too. She shrugged. “Momma lets me have a cassette player. She says that all other music is sinful. All I have are old cassette tapes of hymns. I used to listen to other tapes in the library but they got rid of those.”

“That...that actually sucks. Oh my god...” Jared frowned, studying her face to gauge if she was fucking with him. “You’re missing out on so much good music. And I mean, believe me, I get how important it is to stick to your beliefs and everything, but...holy shit. Music is what makes life bearable half the time.”

She shook her head. “No. Nothing really new. I finished Fun Home.” She smiled. “I really liked it. I want to listen to the musical, but all I have is a cassette player.” That was all Momma let her have, after all. Cassette players and tapes of sermons, hymns, the Bible. 

“So I started reading a new book instead.” She motioned to her bag. “It’s called Everything, Everything. It’s about a girl, who has the immunodeficiency disease that the bubble boy had. All she has is her mother, and her nurse. She can’t leave her house, and she can’t touch anything from the outside that hasn’t been sanitized.”

“Oh, I so want to spoil the ending for you, but I won’t because I’m nice. You’ll like it or you’ll hate it. Keep me updated.” Jared smiled softly. “Now, elaborate: how do you only have a cassette player? It’s the 21st century, don’t you at least have like...a boom box, or something?”

There was something subtly eerie about the snippets Jared got of Carrie’s home life. Something off. Honestly, everything about her seemed just a little wrong. It made him nervous. Not nervous to be around her, but nervous for her.

She looked back at the voice. Jared. The boy from her study hall, and her gym class. She smiled. Closed her book. Put it back in her bag. “Hi Jared! How are you?”

In the back of her mind, she felt Momma’s disapproval. She was talking to a boy. A real boy. Who was nothing that Momma would approve of at all. Not as a friend or anything else. But still, she wanted to get to know him. To have a friend, or at least as close as she could get to having a friend in this Godforsaken place.

“As good as I can be, I guess.” Jared shrugged and sat down beside her. “What about you? Anything new and exciting going on?”

He had a feeling the answer would be no, but the question came out, anyway.

Carrie always looked so troubled. Even when she was smiling. There was always this haunting look in her eyes. Like deep down, a part of her was afraid of whatever was going on. Jared couldn’t help but wonder if it was his fault.

Carrie was sitting outside. Letting the cool air tickle the back of her neck, while the rest of her was wrapped nice and snug in a big sweater, leggings, and a long skirt. No book out on her lap today, just sitting and enjoying God’s work. Soon it would be way too cold to do that, then her and Momma would be in the trailer every day, wrapped in blankets, reading, praying, knitting, sewing. But for now, it was the beginnings of Autumn.

Jared didn’t used to be outdoorsy. Not in New York, where the weather was so unpredictable and extreme that you have to wear a t-shirt and shorts one day and a jacket the next. But the one perk of moving down to Virginia was the weather. It was nice down there, he had to admit. And so, he had started spending a lot more time out and about.

When he saw Carrie, for a moment, he almost didn’t stop. They hadn’t really interacted since that day in the locker room. But...it felt like it would be wrong to ignore her. Or something.

“Hey...” he said, walking up behind her with a little wave.
