Women with weapons, 1970s
Thinking about compulsory heterosexuality as it applies to wlw is so interesting to me because women’s heterosexuality is built on so much more than just “you must be attracted to men” because it’s often really tightly bound up with “you must be attractive to men.” And the thing is that those two things are so closely associated that they kind of become interchangeable with one another?
It’s why women who don’t put in the work needed to meet heteronormative standards of beauty are called lesbians and it’s also why some lesbians are told they’re too pretty to be lesbians because it’s assumed that if you are attractive to men then you must seek out that attraction because you like them and vice versa.
But the need to look pretty (for men, it’s implied) is reinforced on so many other levels besides that; like men will dismiss your opinions by saying you’re probably not attractive, you learn how to do makeup from this super early age, you’re told that you wont get a job unless you show up to the interview emulating a really specific type of femininity.
And eventually this becomes so automatic that you don’t even know that you’re doing it; for a long time I would meet a guy and immediately wonder if he liked my hair or if my makeup looked too overdone or if my shirt was too tight. And because attraction and a desire to be attractive were so linked in my head, I just assumed for a long time that I was more attracted to men and attracted to a lot more of them than I am. Because if I was worried about how I looked around them that must mean I was attracted to them, right?
It’s taken me a really long time to sort through that impulse, and I still reflexively do it when I meet some guys. This isn’t because I find them attractive; it’s just that I’ve grown up in a society that’s told me over and over and over again that my worth is measured in my appeal to men.

i have a question about cis men that I would have typed out but i was struggling getting it down in words
omggggg honestly, i’ve had this same experience over and over again. not when having like heart to hearts tho, it more often happens when i talk to cis men about like stuff happening in the world, stuff related to social justice, but it’s like they have no idea what they’re talking about and they’ve never really thought about it before i talked with them about it, and now that i have, they want to like sit and talk it all out with me and i’m annoyed bc i’m like, dude, i’ve actually thought about this and done research and all this other stuff, and then, this dude whose like clearly never really thought about this before, is like, no, i think you’re probably wrong, maybe it’s this…?
and i used to push back, but now, i intentionally avoid these conversations unless i have the emotional energy to duke it out and force them to stay on topic and explain themselves. bc it’s fucking exhausting to have to continually force someone to talk like an adult. also, i think since they have privilege, they don’t see a problem (socially or otherwise) with just fucking talking and talking and talking forever EVEN when given clear as fuck nonverbal signals that say, ‘are you seriously still talking? shut the fuck up.’ they don’t care. they just keep going. bc every social signal they’ve ever received before that has been, ‘yes, cis man, you’re a brilliant magical flower, every word out of your mouth is poetry, you are a gift to us all, shower us with your nonsense-wisdom.’ so that’s my 2 cents.
^^^^^^^^^ this most exactly
THIS IS SO REAL. They do this on purpose! Once I was arguing w this guy I was dating about something and I was getting increasingly frustrated w him because he wasn’t actually responding to what I was saying. He would throw something else out there and then I would exhaust myself trying to rebut whatever new point he made while tying it to what I perceived to be the original conversation. So eventually I told him, “Hold up. Let’s just drop this bc I feel like we’re having two different conversations.”
AND HE SAID IN RESPONSE, “Yeah, I know. I couldn’t really argue with what you were saying so I talked about stuff I wanted to instead.”
Cis dudes r a trip, don’t touch them.
Yes they do this. And they do not do this with each other. To put it plainly.
YES. THEY. DO. I was posting on this Clarissa Explains White Supremacy page and this “friend” decides he’s going to debate white supremacy with me.. by bringing up him being accused of racism by some kid in high school, in the 11th grade.
Keep in mind this dude is like 27. They will literally talk about the most unrelated shit and call it supportive because it personally caters to their ego.
