Voicemail

“Hey. It’s Samira. I got your voicemail, obviously.”
“I just wanted to say thank you for calling and checking in on me after yesterday. I think I really needed that.”
“I’m trying not to think about it, but it’s hard not to. I know you’re going to tell me I did everything I could. You’re probably right. There were a lot of people we were able to save. Still, it just really fucking sucks.”
“Anyway… thank you. Really. I might take you up on the whole talking thing.”
“I guess I’ll see you during shift change.”
July 8, 8:18 PM
“Hi, I got your recommendation letter.”
“I’ve read it twice now, which is probably embarrassing to admit, but… you wrote some really nice things about me.”
“I tend to doubt myself a lot. I know I’m good at what I do. Or, at least, I’m getting there. But there are still plenty of days where I question my abilities.”
“I guess I just wanted to say thank you. Not just for writing it, but for believing in me.”
“It meant a lot. More than I can probably explain without making this even more awkward.”
“Thank you, Dr. Abbot.”
February 20, 9:42 PM
“I know it’s late. I just got home.”
“I went out with Cassie on a double date tonight. It was her idea. The guy was nice. He was funny too, but I just… don’t think it’s going to go anywhere.”
“I think Cassie was hoping it would. She seems to think I need to get laid.”
“Shit. I shouldn’t have said that. That was so inappropriate. I’m sorry.”
“Um… the date was fine. I just kept thinking I’d rather be somewhere else, which probably tells me everything I need to know.”
“Okay, that’s enough about my extremely uninteresting love life.”
“I got the article you sent me, by the way. I’m going to read it now. I have my pen and my highlighter ready. I’ll let you know what I think.”
“Goodnight, Jack.”
June 21, 9:04 AM
“I got the attending position at Presby!”
“I honestly can’t believe it. I’ve been staring at the email for the last five minutes because I keep thinking there has to be some kind of mistake."
“I should probably be calling my Amma right now. But… I don’t know. It just felt right to call you first.”
“I really don’t think I’d be here without all of your support. I just wanted you to be one of the first people to hear the news.”
“Okay. I’m going to call my Amma now. Bye.”
August 3, 7:24 PM
“I was wondering if you’d want to get coffee sometime.”
“We could talk about that article I sent you the other week, or we don’t even have to talk about medicine. We could just catch up.”
“I’d like to hear how things are at PTMC. I miss everyone.”
“I know it has only been a few months since I left, but it’s weird not being there. I guess I miss it more than I thought I would. Don’t get me wrong, I love Presby. Everyone there is amazing, but it’s just different.”
“And I think I miss talking to you.”
“Not that we don’t still talk. I just mean… actually talking. In person.”
“It would be nice to see you. I know finding time is hard with our opposite schedules, but if you’re free sometime, let me know.”
“I started going to this coffee shop that’s a block from the hospital and it has the best matcha. They also have really good pastries too. I think you’d like it.”
“Just let me know. No pressure.”
October 25, 7:08 AM
“I was hoping to sleep in since I’m actually off today, but apparently my body has decided that five-thirty in the morning is a perfectly reasonable time to start the day.”
“The bed is very lonely without you, just so you know.”
“Also, if you’re stopping for coffee on the way home, can you please get me a strawberry matcha?”
“I really want to go to the farmers market today, too. I’ve been meaning to go for weeks, and today is actually perfect because neither of us has anywhere we have to be.”
“We should definitely stop somewhere for breakfast too.”
“And maybe we can come home and do absolutely nothing for the rest of the day.”
“Okay. I’ll see you when you get home. Hurry up, though.”
“I love you.”
