Now that I've finished Crime and Punishment, I'm more convinced than ever that what I wrote in an earlier post was right.

People often describe Dostoevsky as unbearably bleak, especially when compared to Tolstoy. But every time I hear that, I can't help wondering whether we've been reading the same books.

Dostoevsky descends into the darkest depths of the human soul; not to leave you there, but to uncover a light that could only be seen from within the darkness. His novels remind you that love remains real, goodness survives even the most broken hearts, beauty endures suffering, and redemption is always possible.

Tolstoy, by contrast, begins with harmony. He gives you beautiful people, peaceful landscapes, and lives that seem full of promise; only to dismantle them piece by piece, revealing how fragile happiness is and how elusive meaning can become.

If one writer confronts darkness in order to find hope, while the other strips away certainty until only emptiness remains, then I honestly struggle to see Dostoevsky as the more depressing of the two.

Having now finished Crime and Punishment, I feel even more certain that Dostoevsky isn't the depressing one here.

my broad issue with many adaptations of crime and punishment is that no one pays attention to the fact that in the novel raskolnikov is described as blonde. they always cast him with dark hair. as if anyone but a blonde man could be that evil and freakish

actually, this is highly debated in the book, because the original russian used is not a hair color we have in english, so it’s typically written as blond or brown, when in reality it’s more of a mix, not exactly dirty blonde, but something similar. I don’t speak russian tho, this is just what i’ve heard. If you want a blond raskolnikov, i HIGHLY recommend the russian 2007 adaptation starring vladimir koshevoy!! He is blonde :)

sometimes a family is two women lying about their identities, an embezzler, a hardworking single mom, and the child they are all helping raise

undercover miss hong made three guys in love with the main character only for her to not be in love with any of them. instead, she prioritizes her unconventional family consisting of three other women and a little girl. the series ends with her telling her friend, who is helping her with a case, that they should go to the beach together (her friend’s lifelong dream). the finale was on international women’s day.

i'll never forgive a certain genre of person for fostering this common conception that dostoeyvsky's works are all these horribly depressing, hard to read novels because that man's writing is funny as hell and reads like a long distance friend telling you about a local drama on facetime at 2am
