I’m not sure if this will be helpful to anyone, but you literally do not have to be a good writer to write and post fan fiction. Yes you will naturally get better at writing and finding your voice the more you do it but you do not have to be or become a professional level writer to enjoy writing and sharing fics. It’s common to hear people praise fic writers by saying their work is better than published books, and while I think this comes from a good place, that’s not the norm or expectation. There is also a sentiment that fic writing is “good practice” for becoming a better writer or doing something else later, but if fic is the only creative writing you ever do that is literally okay. Your technical skill does not mean you cannot have fun and build community with your writing, or that other people cannot love and find meaning in your work.

WHC Mai-morial Event

Hello! For those of you who knew Mai (@worksongbyhozier) or her fics (Sonic_Roses on ao3) we are doing a memorial event for her on Twitter and Ao3! 🧡

This event is a tribute to Mai who passed away this year on May 17, 2026, and was created to show appreciation for all of the work she put into the community through fanfiction, script translations, fanart and more. Now through October 4, 2026, this collection is open for fanart and fanfiction dedicated to Mai and some of her most favorite things.

We unfortunately don't have a tumblr account to maintain posts on this platform during the event, but if you have a Twitter or Ao3 account and would like to post something in honor of Mai we welcome and encourage all to join in!!

We have a list of prompts that are assigned by days leading up to Mai's birthday, and we'll be promoting all works submitted for the collection throughout the weeks leading up to and on the event days in September and October. For more specific information, you can view our FAQ on Twitter or check out the Ao3 Collection profile page.

This event is not specific to any one ship! Meaning that if your favorite is Seongtae or Bakujin or Shse or Sjse you can join in!! We hope to see lots of works posted to thank Mai for everything she gave to us, whether you were a close friend of hers, or maybe just enjoyed her artwork and fics.
