@dramadramallama
soul mate really showed one of the deepest queer love stories of the year and yet because they didnt kiss people are calling it "half assed bl". cant have fucking anything
wanted to reserve my judgment for Perfect Crown until i finished it and unfortunately i remained pretty underwhelmed :(
whole show gave me the impression of a one-in-a-million music video. lots of beauty shots, incredibly unnecessary and lengthy super zooms, slow-mo galore... some shots, without being exactly repeated, are blocked the exact same way, many times over, without it meaning anything, except that the director probably really liked how it looked. i guess it was visually pretty, but it was boring, plain and simple.
also, the editing was meh in earlier episodes, but in episodes 11 and 12..... oh my god??? were they late for the final cut and they rushed the episodes out without checking, or were the abrupt cuts to unrelated scenes (music suddenly stopping included) on purpose?
100% of my criticism relates to the directing choices. and the writing. but the story could have survived the poor dialogue and plot holes and lack of depth IF the directing wasn't so, so very bland. and vice versa, i guess.
as it stands, the double whammy of mediocre storytelling + utterly insipid directing is pretty hard to look past. BUT, all that being said, it was not a horrible watch. the acting is fine (phew!), and the overall story had potential. there's literally every trope under the sun in this drama, so i can understand some of its appeal.

if you (like me) are a certified sageuk un-enjoyer, i'd still recommend checking out to my beloved thief.
the only other historical drama i ever enjoyed from start to finish like that was under the queen's umbrella (with maybe a special mention for my country, and mister queen)
to my beloved thief is a solidly written drama, with beautiful character arcs for everyone, and an ending that manages to both make sense and be satisfying.
i really liked how the writing addressed some sides of the particular trope they use for the "magical" aspect, which are usually overlooked in most other dramas i've watched with that same trope. i was pleasantly surprised by how the fantasy elements remained subtle enough not to overtake the whole plot, and not used as an easy cop out for cheap dramatic beats. it was kinda refreshing.
overall, a very balanced show!

exhausted for all of them by proxy. fun stuff. (part 1)
genuinely watched Pavane like this:
🥺🥺🥰🥺🥺🥺😞🥺
three brittle, fragile, quiet souls stumbling against each other in the dark and finding some light within. and the actual use of light in the movie was so pretty... very bittersweet.
