Is Belos from another realm entirely?
(Note: This is mainly a bit of wishful speculation that I’m not entirely sure will actually happen in canon, but I think it could be quite an interesting twist and play on the dynamic of things. Also, TLDR at bottom for those wondering)
Given the heavy implications that Eda’s portal is the only - actually stable and reliable compared to the cracks in reality with the trash slugs - portal to the human realm as well as that Belos didn’t get it stolen from him by Eda, I couldn’t help but think back on all the iconography and color scheme surrounding Belos and find it interesting.
Between the options that Belos is a witch or that he is a human, this episode has gotten me speculating if neither of those are the case in the first place and there’s in fact a third option we’ve yet to consider.
On him not being a witch, besides the out of place technology like pipeworking and the seemingly electricity-based petrification machine, there’s how he completely breaks away from the established techniques of casting magic with a circle on the BIs AND Luz’s method of spell glyphs, what with him not moving a single muscle to summon the worm creature from the intro or phasing himself behind Luz, using a clearly artificial staff to regress Eda’s curse enough so he could speak to her, and how this is clearly not a spell circle so much as a spell ball:
And on him not being a human, well, there’s the way he talks about and to Luz as though she’s a foreigner instead of someone from the same species, how his body inhumanly reshaped itself behind Luz like a being made of goo, and the logical implications I touched upon about him not acting as though the portal belonged to him beforehand when combined with the tech he’s shown:
I mean, when you think about it, Belos would have arrived and started gaining followers around the 1950s to 1960s under the thought that the show takes place in 2019, and it sounds so far like he has only been on the BIs since then at the very least if not longer without access to the human realm over the course of time.
I don’t know about you folks, but with that timeframe in mind, I just have to ask; if Belos has come from the human realm, then how could he have downright futuristic looking technology compared to today’s standards when - presuming that he can’t see into other realms - the last pinnacle of technology he logically would have had access to/knowledge of would be these bulky things?
As for what I speculate he might really be/where he comes from, well, let’s take a look at the symbolism surrounding him and his structures:
In the unauthorized account of history, Belos is depicted as having the top pair of wings from his symbol in the first image, and in the second image as well as a tapestry inside of his throne room, he also associates himself with the iconography of a ring with seven-eight eyes on it.
Meanwhile, throughout his castle, examples like the room on the left with a stained glass window, altar-like spaces, and the woven tapestries on the opposite wall bear a similarity to grander scale churches, while with the Conformatorium underground on the right, we can see enormous statues of winged humanoids with weapons that are holding up the rest of the Conformatorium.
Presuming that the underground section of the Conformatorium was built on Belos’ orders due to them being so well integrated into its support structure, these statues stick out by a longshot as we have never seen anything like them on the Boiling Isles let alone heard of any Valkyries or similarly winged humanoids in the background. And with the Demon Realm taking cues from the concept of the underworld like seen with the original story idea being about Luz dying and going there AKA the proto-Demon Realm, these statues stick out even moreso.
In fact, like I brought up with the title of this post, perhaps there’s another realm we’re not considering.
We have the Human Realm, which is basically our world, and we have the Demon Realm, which like said above is fashioned after the underworld with demons and such populating it, so what about a possible overworld in the form of an Angel Realm? I mean, though angels have established themselves in public consciousness and pop culture as mainly beautiful humans with a single pair of wings, multiple pairs of wings and or rings of eyes may sound quite familiar to those who are versed in more extraordinary descriptions from the bible, like with the ophanim and cherubim down below:
After all, according to some sects of Christianity, where did FALLEN angels go after being expelled from heaven? And it is rather striking how Belos’ clothes, coven, and technology sports a white and gold color scheme that sticks out so much compared to the rest of the Demon Realm, let alone his depictions all over the place with a ring of eyes and multiple pairs of wings…
TLDR: Or in other words, what if Belos turns out to be an “angel” who was cast out from the “Angel Realm” - with some cues being taken from Christianity and potentially other mythological afterlives - and “fell” down to the Boiling Isles, and part of his plan for the Human Realm is to use it to make his way back?
