Spark - Headcanon
When she was young, Emily liked to play with fire. She would sit in the small yard her home had and light boxes of matches, holding the little stick as still as she could until the flame ran down to her fingertips, burned her, and then she shook it out and did it again and again. Her fingers grew calloused from the habit.Â
Once, when she dropped the match, it was not all the way out, and the little spark of fire caught some old, dried brush. It ate all the tinder around it, ate the oxygen, and swallowed and became a bright, wild fire. Emily had screamed and scrambled away, and her mother and father ran out in response. As her mother doused the flames, her father smacked and hit her for being so irresponsible.Â
She never played with matches again.Â

The door unlocked slowly, and Albert limped out, carefully leaning on his comfort object, his old cane, and he stepped into the light with a tired, defeated look in his eyes. The embers that normally hid were out, leaving him slightly gaunt and worn, and older than a man of his age should look, and he took Emily’s hand in a touch far softer than he thought capable, and suddenly felt pain, swallowing.
Emily… We need to talk. About us. And how I’m sorry for ever hurting you.
Emily does not know what to say at first. She looks over her husband, surprised to see him with the cane, surprised to see him so shaken, surprised to see him so... weak.Â
