“Trust me, I remember.” She laughed, moving to wrap an arm around him, burying her face into his side. “Y'know, I still find it incredibly amusing that I could have been coming here with you all these years if we had known that I was like you.”

He chuckled and nodded. “It’s funny, bizarre, and just.. kind of a shame. We could’ve had so much fun here.”

A soft chuckle escaped the girls slightly parted lips as Aaron spoke, a smile gracing her features. “I’ve basically lived with you for like..my whole life? I know you starfish. It’s one of the main reasons I started sleeping across your back.”

He chuckled. “I know, Kay, but I feel like I should warn you, in case you’ve forgotten.”

“We’re all related, aren’t we? At least distantly?” How odd was that? “Doesn’t that make it weird? And, like, prohibit dating among campers?” 

He laughed quietly. “Surprisingly? It isn’t. Anyone is fair game, as long as you aren’t related through the same godly parents. So, for example, someone in the Aphrodite can’t date another one of their siblings, so someone in that cabin, but they could date someone in the Eros cabin.”

He nodded. “It’s always nice when you first come. It’s a big, mostly happy, dysfunctional family. Both literally and figuratively.”

Gabriel looked down at the toddler in his arms that wasn’t paying attention to anything being discussed. “I’m sorry, dude, that sounds horrible…Is…is there anything I can do?”

He bit his lip, shaking his head. “The only thing I can suggest is you keep me away from all sharp objects.”

The girl leaned her head on his shoulder, shrugging lightly. “It’s the end of summer.” Why was he lying to her? She could tell that he wasn’t alright– Why wouldn’t he just tell her that? It’s not like she hasn’t seen him this way before. “Chiron gave me the ‘Okay’ to move into your cabin for the next few months.”

He looked at her, a little in disbelief, but also happy. “Seriously? Oh my god, that’s good. Good luck rooming with me, though. I starfish out, I’m warning you.”

“Alright, alright. Good. Too early for bad puns.” Alex chuckled before falling serious as his friend’s troubles came to light, “Hey. It’s ok. It’ll be ok. You’ve got me, at least. I’ll make sure you’re away from the arena, I’ll keep you from weaponry training. We can work on stamina and weights over the Autumn and Winter. Okay?” Alex moved fluidly, wrapping his closest friend into a hug, an attempt at comfort, “You’re my brother, Aaron. I’m gonna make sure you’re safe and protected. You’re gonna be ok.”

He nodded a little, incredibly grateful that he had a friend like Alex. If he didn’t, then he was sure that by now, he wouldn’t be around. “Okay. I’m putting my training completely in your hands during those months. Kay’s gotten permission from Chiron to ‘look after me’ during the nights, so that’s one less thing for you to worry about, but during the day I’m relying on you.” He hugged him, a grin on his face. “Thank you, bro.”

He nodded a little. “Yeah. In short. It fu- fricking sucks.” Aaron quickly changed his choice of words upon remembering Ben’s presence.

He started to laugh. “It’s not you mate, I promise you.” His laughter went quiet, his face turning serious. “I’m worried. I’ve never had to be here while I had the thing happening.”

The very sight of him brought a smile to her face, but it quickly faded when she noticed his expression. “Hey Ronny.” She patted the spot beside her, voice soft. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?” She turned to look at him fully, her heart nearly tearing in two when she saw the sadness his features carried. “Are you okay?”

He nodded, taking the seat next to her and trying to force a smile. “I’m fine, grand. It’s the summer, why wouldn’t I be?”
