There was a large wave of guilt creeping upon him. Even when his words had been honest, Iker was more than aware she didn’t need to know. He had no right to put that kind of weight on her shoulders, not when neither of them was in a position to do something about it. Whatever laughter and chill moments they were having minutes ago, seemed to dissipate within the air like an old cloud of tension and confusion started to cover them. Iker wanted to shrink.
He kept his gaze down, focus on the coffee he had been drinking, quietly placed at the table. His heart was beating fast, jaw unconsciously tensed as he thought of what else to say. The fear of losing her all over again was coming to life, all because of him. When she finally spoke, his eyes immediately went to meet hers. Iker let her words float in the air before he shook his head once, straightening up on his seat, finally breaking his silence. “Nothing to figure out,” he started. Sabotaging himself all over again. “Sorry I said… what I said, I… Really, just forget about it. Old times crept in again, don’t…” he shrugged, exhaling. What else could he possibly say?
She stood up, the legs of her chair grazing the linoleum in her abrupt movement. It was better to leave, she thought. It was better to avoid the situation and let the ignition die out. To her, this was a sign that she was right to have never let her boyfriend convince her to visit her hometown. Up until now, that is. There’s a saying that you can never forget your first love, and particularly one that had been unfinished. For years she was unable to reach out. Assuming that chapter in their life was over. That time wasn’t aligning on their side. “I’ll see you around.” Her parting words leave her lips as she’s preparing to exit. Maybe they just weren’t ever meant to be more.
For the rest of the day, Abigail spent it showing her boyfriend all the places she spent time growing up. Some, feeling more bittersweet than others. Those places weighing heavy on her mind now that Iker’s confession seared a place into her thoughts. A few days passed, 48 hours, to be exact. She’d successfully avoid any questions regarding her past that involved Iker while simultaneously making sure not to be spotted by him herself. But you could only hide away for so long. Taking a detour from her art supply haul, she heard the faint sounds of chirping, piquing her interest. As she drew near, sighting a beautiful caged bird. She thought it was odd considering it was inside an art supply store, but the owner must have found a new pet. He was quite an eclectic fellow.Â
“Hey, Joe?” She starts, staring at the birds, a soft smile growing across her features. “You partnering with Petco or something?” She was teasing, expecting the footsteps she hears to be him before turning around to be faced with Iker. “—O-oh. I thought you were, um” She shakes her head, straightening up a bit and trying to focus her eyes elsewhere. “So, how long has Joe had this bird? The last time I was here, he had an iguana.” Nice one Abi, ignore the fact you’ve dodged him for two days and casually talk up animals. Great idea.

Just like that, the magic seemed to end. Abruptly cut by his words, that should have never escaped his lips, even when it was the truth. He was supposed to be happy, even when his relationship wasn’t at its best. At the very least, he should not be confessing such things to his long-lost love. Besides, wasn’t she supposed to be in a relationship, too? “Sorry…” he mumbled, eyes on the table as he uncomfortably moved on his seat, “Not doing anything…” he tried, as if that fixed anything. It didn’t. What the hell was he thinking?
Uncomfortable silence reigned in between them, Iker finally looked up at her, shame in his eyes. Once again they seemed to not be at the right place or time. Once again, she was ought to slip through his fingers. Once again, it kept on being proved it was simply not meant to be. “Let’s… Can we move on? I didn’t mean to…” he paused. This time he could only shrug. “I’m sorry, Abi.”
She began to rock, an uneasy feeling overcoming her. She was either on the verge of making a run for it or throwing up. It’s still you, you know? GOD, the more his words played, the broader her realization went; that maybe she had been feeling something similar for years. That maybe the man she paraded around with just filled a void to someone she lost long ago. Iker was always the one Abigail pictured her life with. But, divorce happened, pulling her parents apart and forcing Abigail to eventually move out and in with her father in another state. While she encountered many moments to reach out, she always stopped, making up excuses that he had moved on. College would come, and soon enough, she was focusing on what kind of world she’d carve for herself.
It’s still you, you know? FUCK. She couldn’t keep those few words from replaying in her mind. Her fingers found a way into her brown locks while she rested her head into them, her arms propping up against the table. The noticeable and rather unsettling silence between them was so achingly present that she almost screamed. But his interjection ceased her thoughts for now. “I don’t think I can pretend right now.” her eyes look for him beneath her lashes. “I should go.” she says, “Maybe it’s best we only spend time with each other with our partners until we-uh, figure this out.”

Who would’ve said, they would end up meeting after all those years? After and despite everything. For so long, Iker didn’t even think he’d get to see them again, let alone have a long conversation filled with good vibes, humor, memories and even small talk. It was almost as if none of them had aged. After recalling one of their first dates and how they used to sneak out just to be around the other, Iker shook his head as his laughter ceased, putting his mug down as his gaze falling on them, eventually going silent. “It’s still you, you know? The person I see by my side, at the end of the day.”
She held her breath, fingers tightening the grip of her drink. It had only been hours since she landed back in town. A place she heavily avoided after being ripped from the man she was so fiercely in love with. Now that she was back, courtesy of her boyfriend practically begging to know what life his girlfriend had. And what could Abigail do? Deny him again? He’d been so open and honest with her it was only right she provided the same. And while her stomach did somersaults the entire drive there, it turned out that the man she had these conflicting feelings for would become the highlight of her stay. He was involved with someone, which put her mind at ease as she accepted their inevitable run-in.
The easy conversation and nostalgia were enough for her to even consider befriending Iker now that they both had significant others. But his countenance change following the explosive confession caught Olivia by surprise. And while he may have felt this was the best time to unleash such a bomb, she couldn’t help but wonder what happily taken looked like on his behalf. “ME?” the word fell from her lips gently, careful, and a bit sad. “Iker,” She sighs, his name leaving her lips wrapped in derision. “Don’t do this.” It’s almost a whisper, close to a plea.
