TROP Season Three
I have to start with the Mordor aesthetic this seasonā¦. HOLY SHIT.
this design of the fell beast is insane. it looks almost mummified?? do we think itās a new creation of Sauronās?
FĆ«anorās hammer⦠with the spiky gauntlets and crown of Morgoth in the heart of Mount Doom?!
the darkness of the land, all the greenery from before dying out and leaving black. this shot is straight aura farming.
and the ring-servants!! I know I gushed about them yesterday already, but seeing them in action confronting Durin and picking that one guy straight off the ground while galloping by⦠DAMN

Celeborn and Galadriel in Empire's Exclusive Look at The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Season 3
"For the past few years, Jamie Campbell Bower has been in all-out villain mode ā as Stranger Thingsā monstrous Vecna, he flayed minds, bodies and souls alike. But as he enters another mammoth streaming series, Bower is switching things up. Heās one of the new cast additions to Season 3 of The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, entering the Tolkien-verse in a role that has, until now, been kept tightly under wraps (and much rumoured-over by fans). Empire can finally confirm Bowerās role: meet Celeborn, Elf lord and warrior.
And, notably, the husband of Morfydd Clarkās Galadriel. The character ā briefly portrayed in Peter Jacksonās films by Marton Csokas ā is something of a ālover-boyā, says Bower. The anti-Vecna, then. How they introduce Celeborn ā who canonically married Galadriel in the First Age, and in TROP has been apart from her for centuries ā remains to be seen. But their dynamic is partly inspired by Tolkien and his wife, Edith. āThis idea of longing and yearning is so pervasive in Tolkienās relationship with Edith for the time that they were apart,ā says Bower. āI really feasted on that idea. Celeborn has had to find a way to survive whilst longing for something that he so dearly loved and so dearly missed as well.ā And Clark was more than game to contribute to the pairās sparkling interplay. āSheās kind of rude to him in the books,ā she chuckles. āSheās the queen! But Jamie looks exactly like how I would imagine Celeborn. Heās such an Elf.ā
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay saw hundreds of tapes for Celeborn ā but even without Elf ears and the rest, it was clear that Bower had the stuff. āHe has this voice that is rich and hypnotic and sonorous that feels it has the wisdom of the ages buried inside of it,ā says Payne. āAnd then we did a chemistry read [with Clark], and instantly it just felt like he loved her so much. It felt so natural, and so organic, and so right.ā In the age of Sauron, Middle-earth could use a few more lover-boys."
ringwraiths in rings of power season 3
Daniel Weyman as Gandalf in Empire's Exclusive Look at The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Season 3
"For two seasons, he was The Stranger ā a mysterious Middle-earth figure who hotfooted it around with Harfoots and gained a mentor in the one and only Tom Bombadil. But in Season 3 of The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, actor Daniel Weyman is a Stranger no more. It just takes one look at that beard, the staff, and ā yes ā the pointy grey hat to know that he is, in fact, one of the most beloved creations of J.R.R. Tolkien: Gandalf The Grey.
Heading into the new season, Weyman was told by the Rings Of Power showrunners J.D Payne and Patrick McKay that it was time to go full-Gandalf. āJust before we started Season 3, J.D. and Patrick told me: āWe want to see that Gandalf has arrived. We want to see him as the wizard we all love from Tolkienās writingsā,ā the actor tells Empire. It was exactly what he wanted to hear. āI found this new side to him, the side that we all hopefully recognise: the mischief, the twinkle in his eye.ā
As well as finally donning the full Gandalf get-up (wearing the hat is āunbelievably spine-tingling,ā Weyman says, āI was pinching myself all the way throughā) there is much for the wizard to get to grips with, as Middle-earth gets darker and Sauron makes big moves. This season, explains Payne, Gandalf is āgoing from learning how to control his powers, to understanding that wizards actually have a prophetic dimension. That their job is to inspire the hearts of the people around them to find their own courage to unite against the darkness.ā Who can remember the Elvish word for āfriendā?"

i have such a big issue with andy serkis saying that his casting for the hunt for gollum will be all white because he views middle earth as white. i think that comment and the backlash to it merits serious introspection from him and the producers on WHY you feel that way. comfortability in whiteness and surrounding yourself with other white people doesn't equate to middle earth being entirely white. tolkien described multiple characters as brown skinned, curly haired, tanned, and whatever other adjective you could throw out there. the assumption that all characters in the legendarium are white due to tolkien being inspired by norse mythology is just false and tells me that he hasn't read the books or has blocked out portions of it to make himself more comfortable. it's emerald fennel with heathcliff all over again. and i'm personally disgusted by the comment and probably will not be watching the movie. the original peter jackson movies were all white 20+ years ago and with all the love i have for those films, that fact is one of my biggest gripes with it. lord of the rings is not real, it is fantasy, so there is literally zero reason to exclude poc. and people have different colored skin due to fucking sun exposure. are we saying that these people who have mostly evolved outside all their lives and till the fucking earth outdoors all their lives wouldn't even be tan? like holy shit what kind of cognitive dissonance are we dealing with here
I'm trying to give Serkis the benefit of the doubt so far, but man is it getting harder and harder.
He was specifically referring to the Shire being mostly white, I don't think he elaborated on the other regions of Middle Earth, because I think anyone with rocks in their head would know that it wasn't entirely "Nordic", but why are we using this terminology in 2026???
JRRT HIMSELF rejected the usage of the word because he thought it was associated with RACIALIST THEORIES. This was back in 1967! Like are we really jingling the keys for white supremacists right now?? Serkis what the HELL are you saying.
In light of someone who I will not name saying in so many words that People of the Global Majority basically have no place in Tolkien adaptations,
I hope this allows the fans and the actors of the rings of power to confirm and accept that about 95% of the hate and harassment they get is due to nothing but racism.
This project that shall not be named is going to heavily use AI and will therefore, to me at least, be of much lower quality than the Rings of Power ever could be, but, because it will be fully white, that will eclipse the perception of said lower quality and suddenly make it "right".
Anyone surprised?
I'm not.
This must be a post actually, I assume the reason we're getting this new flush of Tolkien films rn is twofold. One, of course, is because apparently WB would have lost the rights to it all if they hadn't done anything with the franchise in the next couple of years. But I also think Warner Bros are trying to ride the racist backlash against RoP by releasing a bunch of ''''''non-political''''' (only white people in it) tolkien films that'll get the white nationalists going 'see THIS is how you adapt tolkien RESPECTFULLY unlike that DISGUSTING RoP' and because a great deal of nominally leftist tolkien fans still believe that that kind of language is completely neutral when taken out of a racist context, and that their perfomative disgust of RoP has no wider implication or impact, it will become the dominant tolkien fandom narrative and will no doubt stimulate another big revenue spike for the company.
Warner Bros. Pictures will release The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum worldwide on December 17, 2027.
[Andy Serkis] then conceded that there āhave been criticismsā and added that: āThis particular film is somewhat acknowledging that. But we donāt think we will be doing a politically correct just-casting-for-the sake-of-casting-and-ticking-boxes version of the film. So, itās only where relevant basically.ā
Wow what a coincidence. I wonder who this article was for. I wonder what faction of the fanbase they are courting with this PC tickbox rhetoric.
