Sunrise on the Reaping really makes you question how many rebellions took place, how many attempts to break the arena and stop the games happened before Katniss came along. Plutarch says “Luck or better timing” and it truly is timing. Knowing that the people in the rebel plot in catching fire had already done this at least once (because this is not guaranteed to be the first attempt), makes its success make more sense.

They learned from their mistakes, they had people (aka Plutarch) on the inside in a better position, timing was essential to making the rebellion work.

Between the clock and the “we need someone like you- luckier maybe or better timing. Wouldn’t help if they had an army at their back”…

What if Plutarch or other Capitol members of the rebellion were the ones to arrange the third quarter quell reapings? Either planted the seed for Snow or made the swap themselves.

Plutarch probably had multiple schemes in place to be in charge of the games or at least one of the lead game makers. What if this was his way of getting MULTIPLE rebellious victors in the arena to try and blow it up together? Ones with more training and anger and protection from their victor status than the average kid reaped. He probably figured he’d get Haymitch again, or some other victor similar to him, and could get Beetee and Mags and Haymitch in there to back them up.

It was just extra good timing that Katniss and Peeta came along the year before.

There’s something so ironically twisted that Haymitch’s name was never pulled from the reaping bowl for his games - he took someone else’s place in a rigged draw.

Then 25 years later Haymitch’s name is pulled in truth for a draw rigged in a different way - and someone else takes his place.

I’m white so obviously take what I have to say with a grain of salt but it does set off some alarm bells for me to be casting a Black man to play a character who is:

* Repeatedly described in the text as extremely ugly

* In part defined by an unrequited romantic and sexual obsession with the (white) protagonist’s mother

* Textually a former member of a racial supremacist organization, only defecting after the death of aforementioned white woman

Also who has a backstory where he gets tormented and bullied by a group of white kids, including being hung upside down (!!!), which I cannot possibly imagine they will handle at all tactfully given the massive change in connotation this casting brings

This is yet another example of how making a character Black without considering how that affects the entire perception of the narrative, can lead to racist consequences that could have been avoided if anyone had just... Thought about it. There are many characters that can be recast as Black and that leads to similar or even better narrative development! This is not that.

Hello! I just finished reading A Power Unbound, and firstly I wanted to tell you that I love this trilogy so, so much. I recommend A Marvellous Light to basically everyone I meet, and I was SO excited for this last book upon learning Ross and Hawthorn were the main couple. It did not disappoint!! I'd loved Hawthorn from his first scene in AML and him getting his own book and romance made me so happy. So THANK YOU for these wonderful characters and beautiful books, I'm very much looking forward to your future writing!

I did have a couple questions, if you had answers you're at all willing to share. Hawthorn stan that I am, I'm also fascinated by the drama that is Edwin/Hawthorn lmao, I think that sort of doomed relationship is so delicious. Have you written or would you ever write anything prequel-y about them? A short story or the like? If not, is there anything you brainstormed up about them that didn't make it into the books?

Secondly, do Edwin and Robin ever find out that Ross wrote the Roman books? Because that would be such a funny scene.

as a fanwriter myself, and as an author who's made the decision to engage with readers on a predominantly fannish platform... I prefer not to come down all Word Of God and deny readers or fans the pleasure of coming up with their own answers. whether you intend to write fanfic about it or just happily develop your own headcanons: the text is out there, so it's yours now!

so the answers to 'what was edwin and jack's relationship like' and 'do edwin and robin ever find out about alan's books' are both: whatever you want it to be. whatever the next fanwriter wants it to be.

*the only exception to this is: yes, they all survive world war one, I'm not a monster
