Note: While the film was set in a Peking Opera troupe, a lot of these studies came from Kunqu opera (昆曲), which I actually watch a lot more of.

Do you use references for drawings? I mean I guess I'm just asking, how did you get to where you are art-wise? Especially being self taught??? I'm just.. so in awe of your work

Thank you so much for your kind words, feeling honored to answer your question. I hope my reply helps in anyway to the answers you seek. Everyone has infinite ways to proceed with their steps into finding their style or inspiration, I can tell you what helps me and maybe it’s somethings that gravitates towards your process.

Most of the time, I don’t use references, unless I have to draw up a specific pose or background, especially fanart (I’d have an open window with multiples pics of a character next to the canvas)

I normally sum up whichever palette or thumbnails I’ve got in mind for that day or idea. Using images and colors to vibe with an idea on screen or even music ends up formulating the blob in my headspace. I wish I could be more technical with my process, but it’s all usually led by a “feeling.” Having multiple ideas at once can even lead to doodles and random scribbles that end up leading to a bigger idea when I go back to the drawing board.

I definitely recommend looking through artbooks from your favorite films, pinterest, and even drawing from life such as observing people or silhouettes. Drawing “everything” in your sight can seem pretty overwhelming, but it can break the ice on subject you would be comfortable or not comfortable drawing. I am not a fan of perspective with architecture, but trying to draw a building led my process to figuring out in drawing proportions for the body and being open to diverse designs for characters. One subject can help benefit another subject in the most unexpected ways.

After multiple critiques and self-learning, I eventually knew I gravitated toward character designs and illustration. The focus helped me find resources, such as Character Design References and Proko, that reigned me into improving anatomy and be comfortable with being loose with my art. There a wonderful discord servers with amazing creators banding together to provide a space to discuss and share ideas, such as Resolution Art and Lightbox Expo.

It’s easier said than done, but don’t be scared to ask for advice or another eye to help with your process. I am happy to answer any questions you have on tips and resources to seek the answers in your endeavor as an artist. Thank you and I wish you a happy holiday!

• Coral and Ursula (2021) •

• Coral and Ursula are the daughters of King Poseidon and his concubine, Lady Cersei, from the Kingdom of Titus.

Both sisters were banished by the kind after their mother’s sudden death. The kingdom feared the princess’ were a cursed omen sent by Cersei, suspecting they would one day take the life of the heir of Titus, Prince Triton.

Banished with no one to confide, Coral and Ursula ultimately took refuge in the outskirts of the Moray territory near the eel trench.

Ursula grew to hone her gifts as a sorceress, developing the teachings left by their mother. Coral scavenged for human trinkets in shipwrecks to sell in the Moray markets.

Ursula constantly worried that Coral’s curiosities of the human world would one day drives the sisters apart. Coral eventually ventures onto land and meets and falls in love with a traveling musician, Elijah.

Coral, a mermaid princess living in exile from the Kingdom of Titus, falls in love with a local musician during her venture onto land.

Elijah travels the country, booking venues to make it as a rockstar. During Elijah’s visit to his hometown, Crystal Cove, one night he saves Coral from a fisherman’s net left out in the marina.

The love story between an exiled mermaid princess and a local musician.

Lir, a close friend of Coral and from the Kingdom of Titus, attends college on land. Lir is studying to become a veterinarian.

Lir meets Cyrus, a classmate who works as a lifeguard in the Crystal Cove beach. Cyrus is working to one day run his own bar with his older brother, Tyrell.
