Hey Sebastian! Big fan and admirer of your work. Just wanted to ask what was your thoughts process behind City of Stars? Its a beautiful piece. ♡
Thank you. I really appreciate that.
Honestly, it started out as a little melody just rattling around in my head while walking on Hermosa Beach Pier, but it quickly became about the push and pull of being a dreamer in LA.
You have this city that's glowing, filled with all these beautiful lights and opportunities. But underneath all that glitter, you can feel incredibly isolated.
I wanted to write something that captured that exact contradiction—the thrill of chasing something bigger than yourself, and the quiet, desperate hope that someone is looking back, sharing in it with you.
It’s a love letter to the magic and the heartbreak of the city.
I actually was going home from a date with my then girlfriend. You probably know her, she’s an actress now, and I’m happy for her. But she was the one that inspired me.
Anyways, thank you so much for the ask.
How did you find out you loved jazz? What is the first memory you have of the genre? Does it make you feel a certain way?
-🐞
1. Well, the thing is, it was my mother that actually introduced me to it.
I was four, and my mom brought home a turntable from my grandparents’ house. She had a few records as well. I can still picture them spinning on the turntable. One of them was a blistering Hoagy Carmichael track.
I remember just sitting on the rug by the speakers, completely mesmerized. It felt like the musicians were having an argument without ever raising their voices.
Every time that needle dropped, my whole world just expanded.
and I just became OBSESSED.
2. It made me feel EVERYTHING. It’s a heartbreak and love song rolled up into one.
It’s the thrill of not knowing exactly what's going to happen next, but knowing it's going to be brilliant.
It’s a dying art, but when it’s live in a room with people who truly respect it?
There’s genuinely no better high in the world.
I miss my mom. I hope she’s proud of me now.
hey seb any thoughts on your siblings
I miss them.
I thought that Court was dead for many years until he randomly texted me recently about something. He’s my older brother, so me and him liked to torment the others when we were younger.
(when we were still together, that is)
But apparently he works for the CIA, so that’s fucking epic.
Colt, he’s really funny and we get along well. He’s also the bravest one out of us (actually any of my brothers could be the brave one compared to me) like he’s a fucking STUNT MAN for god’s sake. EVERY DAY he risks his life. HOW IS THAT NOT BRAVE???
Ryland…out of the five of us, I think that both of us might be the joint normal one. He has a doctorate in molecular biology, so that’s impressive. He worked his ass off to get that, so he has my respect. He’s also a middle school science teacher, so he gets to inspire kids practically every single day.
(he’s the normal one)
Casey…he’s actually my favourite…DON’T TELL THE OTHERS THAT!!!
We actually have a close bond with each other, despite only having a two year age difference.
He loves jazz because of me.
So when an incident featuring our dad and Court led to us being separated, me and Casey actually lived with our aunt Miriam and her daughter Laura (who’s practically our sister btw).
That’s where I got my surname from.
But, yeah, he’s my ride or die.
Thank you very much for the ask, Mallo. It means a lot to me.
Mr. Wilder, what else do you do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
-🐞
Outside of music, hmm...
Well, I love watching old movies, I can also tap dance, I also have an interest in jazz history, and I can cook !
To answer your question...no, I don't...not really...
Do you like jazz by any chance, Rocky?
@sebsjazzbar
just answer this! Jazz very interesting! But can cause headache sometimes because notes different than Eridian language.
Gosh I'm so happy that you liked the song I was sweating buckets from nervousness!
Uhm the band is called SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS. I really really love them they're my favourite jazz group of all time. They actually have their own genre that was given to them called 'death jazz'.
I've been listening to these guys for months on end. I'm very passionate about them. My favourite song from them is 'SUMMER GODDESS'. It makes me tear up from how beautiful it is without fail.
I'd also recommend 'suffocation' and 'fantastic planet'. But the rest of their stuff is really good too! In your own time of course.
-🐞
Hey, no problem!
Also, you are so correct, it is very beautiful!
I admit, when I first heard about “death jazz”, it sounded like a marketing pitch.
But that was a few years ago. I’ve changed, I’m trying my best to open my ears,
And boy, have my ears been BLESSED!
The trumpets. The piano. The, well EVERYTHING ABOUT IT! It’s just so phenomenal!
I love that they’re actually playing it and not hiding behind synths or pop tracks. I respect it!
Josei. I respect that man. I have found out about this man. And his solo-oh it’s just *chef’s kiss*
Anyways, this is just about Summer Garden. I’m gonna go enjoy the rest of their discography, so thank you very much, ladybug anon (can I call you that?)
You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.
By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.
I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?
it's probably from assholes making asks a minefield of trolling/harassment for years with no real blocking ability, which turned people off from allowing asks on their blogs so as a whole the site moved away from it
but now that we do have better blocking, we should try to revive it.
Reblog if your ask box is open.
Mr. Wilder I have a song that I recommend you listen to. It's called 'what planet is this??' by SEATBELTS. It's also in an anime. I've never watched it I just came across the song naturally and I heavily enjoy it.
I also have a jazz band that I'd recommend to you if you don't already know them. But that's only if you want the name.
-🐞
Okay, I’ll take a listen…
WOW
WOAHHH
WOAAHAHHH
Okay, okay, okay…
God, I love the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack so much…
Also, about this jazz band, I would like to know the name…
But this is an amazing rec, so thank you very much for this
Please listen to this song ⬇️

I HAVE A STRAWPAGE (why am I shouting?)
https://sebs-jazz-bar.straw.page
i. in this version, i stayed. we get a nice house with a big backyard and plenty of trees surrounding it. we both graduate state college and we go down to the shore every summer for a week. i watch you set the table as you call our children down for dinner and i try not to think about the other side of this coin. besides, dreams are just that; dreams. besides i have you and isn’t that all i ever wanted?
ii. in this version, you came with me. we found a studio above a bar and i photograph all our moments. we’re happy, so happy, at first. we ignore the small cracks, thinking that with time they’ll go away. but the city was never your favorite choice. everything was always too small, too loud, too much for you. you tell me you miss our old town. you tell me you miss the old me.
iii. in this version, we meet right out of high school and waste our days together. it’s screaming matches and sneaking through windows for 2am apologies. it’s young love and that’s it. it’s innocent and sweet and dramatic and messy. you swear we’ll get married and i swear to love you as long as i live and then some. but just like a scorching sunburn, it eventually fades. i look back and laugh at how innocent it all was and how i was truly loved, even if it was just for a summer.
iv. in this version, we never meet. we’re parallel lines that grew up on opposite sides of town. i leave and keep leaving before i grow roots anywhere. i move cities and laugh with strangers and leave my heart in so many places that no where truly feels likes home. i try not to think about our town, but it feels like haunting. as if something keeps calling for me to come back. as if im forgetting something. you graduate and move a few roads down from your parents. you find a nice girl and you both eventually start sending christmas cards in the mail every year. you check your teeth every morning and every morning they’re all there; but deep down you feel as if something’s missing. we both learn to live with that ache.
