Plot:
Saint Dane:
This is one of Saint Dane's best reveals, frankly. He hides that he's Nassi (the developer of the fertilizer) so well that I forgot until the re-read. When he did reveal it, I had to put the book down. Any time DJ, as SD, successfully plays us as readers, I feel SO MAD. In a good way. (See: The Quillian Games.) Now THIS is an example of him properly toying with Bobby and co-- he can reveal who he is (with Roder and Mallos) or hide it (Nassi and Figgis) and he does what benefits him. Have I mentioned he's the perfect villain?

BONUS ROUND-- Vo Spader: 10/10
The very definition of reasonable crashout. Not sure why anyone expects Bobby to be able to handle a guy that a. Knows his dad was murdered and b. Knows who did it.
No points off for Press's death. Was it his fault? Maybe 60%. But hey, it was the way things were meant to be.

First up is of course The Merchant of Death, spoilers below the cut (for the whole series)
Plot: 7/10
The Merchant of Death was never my favorite of the series and it's because of how quickly the two groups reconciled. Call me cynical but I think we leave Denduron in too good of a place.
Otherwise, I think DJ is one of those writers who will say what he means in his books, and this is a pretty anti-nuclear war message. Reading it today, after the strikes on Iran, made it hit a little different. (Can't WAIT to get to the Reality Bug for the same reasons.) I also got hit with the "rich get richer poor get poorer" plot line at the same time, and of course that one also got me good.
Normally I'm not someone who likes a deus ex machina, but Bobby's "deus ex tak-ina" was the PERFECT ending to Saint Dane's schemes. What Saint Dane has already learned is that he can't count on Bobby to be predictable. Bobby won't go along with him easily, either, he's going to have to fight to break him. (And break him he does!) Also, of COURSE Bobby put a live explosive in his pocket, what a dumbass :D
Saint Dane: 9/10
There's only one point off because I think Saint Dane fucked up right at the beginning by making the homeless man jump to his death. If he wanted to convince Bobby/Loor to join him, I don't think he should've done that.
Other than that, what a villain. He's cold, persuasive, and doesn't reveal too much. I love how he leaves both Bobby and the audience in the dark-- especially when it comes to who he is at any given time. I LOVE that he reveals he's Mallos and lures Bobby into this sense of security, like Bobby knows where SD is, but hides that he's Figgis until the last minute.
Bobby: 8/10
In addition to the whole "puts-live-explosives-in-his-flammable-clothes" thing, Bobby has established an inability to follow simple directions and ignore the rules of the game for his own benefit. Normally this would piss me off, but he's such a well written guy that I don't really care. Also, he's fourteen, which I keep forgetting. He's not meant to be perfect, and I like that he's allowed to make mistakes. DJ once said in an interview that he likes painting his characters into a corner, and boy does Bobby end up stepping on a lot of wet paint to get out of situations.
I do think he's got a lot of audacity for completely ignoring Uncle Press's one rule, but what fourteen year old white boy DOESN'T have massive amounts of audacity?
