     We are currently launching Al Tayr Al Muhaajir, a zine dedicated to the (slightly disoriented) members of the Sudanese diaspora! We are here to listen to the stories, experiences and personal insights living abroad have given you through all mediums of expression. This zine is for Sudanese people of all backgrounds, from all corners of the world. We want to reclaim a narrative that has been stolen from us by global media and cultivate our own authentic Sudanese narrative! We are holding submissions for our first issue, “The Otherness Issue” from now until June 15th, 2015. We urge you to spread the word to friends and family and to submit! Feel absolutely free to ask us questions here or email us at: [email protected].

On another note, we would like to iterate that although we are a zine that predominantly focuses on the Sudanese diaspora, we welcome submissions from Sudan born-and-raised contributors, and South Sudanese contributors. So by any means, do not hesitate to submit!

Khartoum has an almost benign spirit, but hides a sinister secret. It is a city-state, unrepresentative of the country’s citizens, in which most business, political and social interests are concentrated in the hands of a small ethnic elite that has ensconced itself behind the garrison walls of the city and goes about securing interests, lining its pockets and accruing political capital. In addition to this concentration of interests, Khartoum has simply never really diffused power and resources to the peripheries. Partly because both were scant, so the capital took precedence, but mostly because the elites in power were replicated from greater Khartoum elites and their extended networks, which did not stretch into the vast expanse of the rest of the country...
