actually i think andy weir's boldest writing choice in project hail mary isn't the twist that "grace was a coward & had to be forced onto the mission" which then makes his decision to potentially die to save rocky & erid so beautiful. no, the BOLDEST choice is that what triggers grace's first memory of the petrova line & astrophage at the very beginning of the book (thus kicking off the entire plot) is seeing a line of his dick blood on the floor after yanking out a still-inflated catheter

Actually that's one thing that really stood out to me rewatching httyd 1.... how much they focus on the act of creation and the creative process. Hiccup drawing Toothless for the first time used as a means to highlight the damage to the tailfin. Hiccup drawing Toothless again used as a moment of genuine connection as Toothless mimics his behaviour and draws too. Hiccup creating the tailfin with that beautiful New Tail soundtrack and midnight montage.... Hiccup developing and troubleshooting the tailfin rig with another amazing montage..... creating things is shown and treated with such joy and reverence that I can't help but feel the itch to go and create something myself, to feel the graphite sliding across paper as he does with charcoal. It's oddly inspiring in that way.

I ran into this post years ago and to be honest, it has completely reoriented the way I engage with food.

Like. I’ve always sorta understood that things grow moldy or stale or sour or such if left out, but I never really internalized it in a meaningful way.

But now I’m just like.

Yeah. The hungering dust. There exists omnivorous dust in the air that will eat my food if I don’t.

Those bagels have been sitting there for a week. Are we going to eat them soon or are we leaving them for the hungering dust?

Pizza’s been sitting out on the counter for an hour. Everyone’s enjoying the pizza, but if we don’t want “everyone” to include the hungering dust then we should probably put it away soon.

That’s just. That’s how food works to me now. There exists an invisible predator in the air that hungers for your yummies, and it will not hesitate to eat your food if you don’t make the effort to protect and preserve it. And eat what can’t be preserved before the dust can.

I haven't seen Project Hail Mary yet but I am now reading the book and oh my God, does Andy Weir ever understand scientists. I'm at the point where Grace just figured out that he is one despite not knowing his own name, and everything about his thought process right now screams scientist.

He's puzzling out his own identity via trial and error. He's very, very observant and using every little thing as a clue. He thinks in miles, the tape measure is metric. He took the time to figure out stopwatch controls before an experiment, in the midst of an identity crisis. He knows how to improvise an experiment from really basic supplies.

As Mark Watney would say, he's sciencing the shit out of this. But Grace wouldn't say that because he has like the polar opposite of Watney's swear word vocabulary.

Also the way he just trusts the data and runs with it. He doesn't go "acceleration due to gravity can't be fifteen meters per second, that's impossible," he goes "that can't be true on Earth so I'm not on Earth."

“There aren’t enough hours in a day.” There are actually. The problem is that we think 40 hour work weeks are an unavoidable fact of life.

The problem is that everyone has to work 8 hours, pretty much no exceptions, and with getting ready time + (unpaid) lunch + commute, “8 hours” is actually anywhere between 9 and 12, every single day, with more work to do when you get home because our society and culture was built around having one member of the household home full time and nothing has changed now that almost everyone works.

No wonder Americans are reliant on DoorDash and fast food, there’s no time or energy to cook. No one wonder mental and physical health are in shambles, many just spent all day sitting in fluorescent lights with little to no stimulation. “Just wake up earlier” “Just meal prep”… these are ok short-term, individual solutions, but the broader, systemic issue is obvious. We aren’t built for this. There’s no work-life balance. Genuinely, I think if our culture could normalize a shorter work week, many individuals’ biggest problems would simply evaporate.

I have heard of black people warning their kids that the race of a police officer is cop and you should not expect solidarity from them. The same applies to other types of minorities.

When you become the enforcer and protector of capital, you are making the deal to be slightly favored by the system over others like you, in exchange for being its servant. Your solidarity is with the system that you serve, even if it hates you.

I require the context. Who are they fighting? because for example Q would absolutely lose in a fight against Picard, but Picard would be completely helpless when faced with the Doctor.

although obviously it's all moot because whoever is fighting him, Bugs will always win.

Princess Celestia as she is now couldn't personally beat any of them, but she'd send Twilight Sparkle to do it, and Twilight could "beat" any of them except Bill Cipher by using the power of friendship (which is to say, she could convince any of them but Bill to be friends with her and her friends, or she could deploy Fluttershy to do it.) Twilight could not personally win Bill Cipher over with the power of friendship or get one of her team to do so, but she could get Fluttershy to get Discord. Discord might be able to beat Bill, or might get his ass kicked, it kind of depends who's writing it. Against Twilight (sent by Princess Celestia), Q, The Doctor, Steven Universe, and Bugs Bunny all decide to be friends and don't want to fight anymore, which is winning in a sense.

Steven Universe also has The Power Of Friendship, so using that, he'd make friends with Q, The Doctor, Princess Celestia and her minions, and Bugs Bunny. The only entity malevolent enough for this not to work on is Bill Cipher.

Bill probably beats Steven, cannot beat the Doctor (the Doctor is specifically designed for fights against Bill-class entities), can beat Princess Celestia maybe even if she pulls in her minions and they deploy Discord, cannot beat Q, and cannot beat Bugs.

Q could beat any of these except Bugs. However it is unlikely that Q would take a fight with Bugs seriously, so he probably "loses" because it's funnier that way (also because the way all stories are written, Bugs must win.) The Doctor is also designed for beating Q-class entities as well as Bill-class, but a fight with Q generally redefines "winning" so that maybe Q has been driven off, and has stopped doing whatever he was doing, but then it turns out he was doing it to make you learn something you didn't want to face, and the Doctor is as vulnerable to that as Picard is. I would say that by that metric, Q "beats" the Doctor because Q wouldn't get into a fight with the Doctor unless he had something to prove, and he'd end up proving it.

So actually the only real fight here is Bill Cipher vs anyone who is neither Bugs Bunny nor the Doctor, as all the rest of the contests either end in friendship and mutual agreements, or Bugs Bunny wins. We know the Doctor can beat Bill, and Q can beat Bill, but Bill vs Celestia (and team) or Bill vs Steven (and team) are real fights.

sounds very similar to a radio story i heard in 2014 ago about credit card debt. the debt got sold to a collection company and a couple received a court summons. they knew they had taken on debt, but they were confused about who this new company was and where specifically the number they were supposed to owe came from.

they show up in court and just ask the lawyer for the collection company: can you prove where this number comes from? Do you have a contract showing that you purchased our debt? probably luckily for them, a reporter researching a book on the topic showed up and asked the same questions.

10 minutes later they get in front of the judge and the collection company drops the whole case and theyre free to go. story is below, it has a transcript in the link too

one thing i love about about kathryn janeway is that at least twice a season, she is put through circumstances that would legitimately qualify as a villain origin story if she decided to go off the deep end, but she remains good to the best of her abilities.

this woman routinely goes through situations that has her crew thinking “damn I’m glad I don’t have to make that decision”, and even when she errs, she errs on the side of justice and integrity.

the show directly addresses her depression and guilt from her point of view and other characters (namely Tuvok) address it out loud. she is suffering for the choices she made and makes.

Kathryn Janeway is, perhaps, one of the best female examples of a hero that embodies “heavy is the head that wears the crown” while actively abhorring/loving that everything is her decision.

she could be a villain if she wanted, and justify it. with the loyalty her crew shows her circa season 6 and 7, they’d probably justify it for her. she chooses at every turn not to be and I admire that so much.

keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it's immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like "yeah so this is going to happen to the internet" and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online. I hate being right especially when I don't even get paid for it

when a government bans young people from using social media, and then categorises messenger apps like Signal and WhatsApp as "social media", they are pushing those young people toward using text messages, a fundamentally insecure form of communication. texts are not encrypted in transit and can be read by both the sender's mobile carrier and the recipient's. that also means they can be leaked in data breaches, subpoenaed, or just handed over willingly to law enforcement at the carriers' discretion.

this is not JUST about destroying kids' privacy by the way, although that is bad on its own! but think about it: if you can push everyone to spend their formative social years communicating through an insecure protocol, most of them are not going to do the work of moving to a secure one the moment they're legally allowed! banning everyone under 16 from Signal and WhatsApp creates a whole population of people more likely to continue, for the rest of their lives, to communicate using a tool the government can access at the drop of a hat
