I believe a lot of insistence for m*leven stems from strong opposition of the alternative (byler) rather than a genuine investment in the pairing.

If you remove Will from the narrative…what remains?

Their disagreements are repetitive; development stagnant. The show frequently highlights their incompatibility.

If they were telling an epic love story why do both characters flourish independently yet wither together?

Some people would rather root for something superficial than entertain something queer…even at the cost of an excellent story.

Matthew confirmed that the VHS Special Edition is Brenner's tapes (x), but I still wanted to post this anyway :)

The only time we're shown the same aspect ratio as the VHS Special Edition is in this surveillance camera footage:

Even Jonathan's camera footage, which is also recorded on VHS, isn't this exact aspect ratio.

So yes, the VHS Special Edition isn't just any VHS footage. It's surveillance camera footage. (surveillance cameras around Hawkins x)

The Mysterious Heart

He can't say it... he can't even write it.

Except for two instances...

When he turns to look in Will's direction. If you re-watch this scene, he first looks forward towards Nancy/Jonathan then turns his head to the left... exactly where Will is standing... while he says "I can't lose her again".

When Will pushed him to do so while standing behind him and featured in the camera shot.

Each time he cannot say or write it, El is present but Will is missing. But every time he can say it, Will is right there beside him.

This isn't some re-used plot point that doesn't properly resolve. This is a major aspect of the story as a whole... that's why it keeps re-occurring.

His feelings and his heart is integral to the story as a whole. Without heart, it all falls apart.

Above is one of my favourite scenes through a metaphoric lens. Will feels "crazy" "nervous" and "the sky spins" for him; these are feelings of being in love and he's struggling with it. Lucas says he gets nervous too but "the sky doesn't spin" for him. He then asks Mike "it ever spin for you?" And, of course, Mike avoids directly answering the question. Unwilling to explicitly reveal his heart. However, he does immediately turn his complete attention towards Will.

But his feelings remain a mystery. He cannot say "I love you" ever again since ST4. He creates the motto "friends don't lie" while he continues to lie to his friends and himself. He builds a bomb that he truly never symbolically drops. He never becomes "Mike the Brave".

Even for viewers who deny Byler evidence feel like something is missing from ST5. They may not be able to pin point exactly why it felt so unsatisfying. But a major reason is Mike and his arc. Mike himself has been a mystery for nearly a decade now. A mystery with many clues and buildup but no reveal or resolution. The "X" was never solved, nor the missing puzzle piece found.

Evidence of Young Will in the Rainbow Room!

Curse my facial recognition skills, but I saw these pictures of the kids in the rainbow room, and almost instantly, this particular face stood out to me:

Firstly - I don't remember seeing this kid in the season 4 rainbow room scenes.

Secondly - I almost immediately recognised that this actor was Luke Kokotek, the actor that played Young Will in the first flashback scene of season 5:

As you can see - same face shape, slope of eyebrows, eye shape, and eyelid fold.

To double check I wasn't actually going insane, I sense checked against another picture of the actor:

The resolution of the photo I took of the book is really low, but you can see at least two moles on the neck of both the actor and the picture in the book. Aside from that, the shape of their ears match up too - the left one is rounder and the right one is slightly pointier, in both pictures.

The funny thing is - it's clearly a younger version of Luke Kokotek playing a test subject in the Rainbow Room. However, on IMDb, he only has season 5 credits on his profile and his name is not mentioned in any of the season 4 credits, so he clearly doesn't feature in the show - so why include a still of him in the official book?

Either they cut all of his scenes in season 4 for some reason (but released BTS footage of him to the author of this book?)... Or...

There might be footage of a Young Will in the Rainbow Room that we haven't seen yet...

In the end, they will eventually die at Lovers Lake Sattler Quarry. I don't necessarily think this ending fits the tone of the series, after season 3, but I feel like it's something that could happen. Will's fake body was found there. Mike almost died jumping off the cliff. It's bittersweet but poetic.

Will feels Vecna's presence and pain, acting as a biological radar rather than just being "flayed". His connection with the hive mind is much more powerful than any of the Vecna's victims. Why keep Will alive? He is unconsciously helping Vecna's plan. To take over Hawkins. He is protecting Vecna from dying by serving his physical body as an alternate space Vecna can live in.

He is a phylactery.

"In Dungeons & Dragons, a phylactery is a powerful, magically warded object used by a lich to house their soul. It is the anchor of the lich’s immortality. If the lich's physical body is destroyed, its soul retreats to the phylactery, allowing it to regenerate a new body nearby in a matter of days".

But, his not an object, Will is a person!

"A phylactery can absolutely be a living being. While traditional D&D rules imply it must be an object, Dungeon Masters frequently use a living creature as a phylactery to create an intense moral dilemma for the players.

Players cannot defeat the lich without killing the innocent host, forcing them to find a way to extract the soul safely, like in a sacrifice?".

The host might suffer from nightmares, random bursts of necrotic magic, or a slowly decaying physical appearance.

You cannot say that he is Vecna but he is, sort of, part of the system. Without even realizing.

Mike opens his heart to Will, in a some kind of confession, and is forced to stab his heart as a sacrifice, which finally ends the curse. Afterall, "it started with Will, and it will end with Will ".

The A side was easy. Take the B side to see the dark Christmas and the emotional new years eve.

It’s the hardest one to discuss since so many people don’t like it and don’t wanna hear it, which frustrates me (even if I understand), but the “Will is going to die” theory is — in my opinion — the one that holds the most weight.

Off the top of my head … the “Ayers” gravestone that is obstructed just enough to look like “Byers”, Billy’s gravestone that changes from Billy to William, “we have to kill our brother”, “you’re killing him” as Vecna’s head is getting lobbed off, the heart with the sword through it, x (the exotic matter, that they have to explode) framed directly on top of him ..

There is a literal plot point in the comics where Will The Wise is possessed and has to be killed by Mike The Brave in order for them to beat the evil and win.

Watching season 5 again .. it’s somewhat clear to me, at least, that he’s already possessed.

I don’t think he’s going to stay dead. But he’s (if we get anything) going to have to die.

Mike too, that’s just a lot more to get into and I don’t wanna do that.

WSQK, Dec 16th broadcast, timestamp 12:31pm:

“You know what really annoys me about this place sometimes, Hawkins? It’s when, a person in the studio before you doesn’t put the correct records back in the correct cover!”

Seems like the Mind Flayer was up to things that Vecna didn’t entirely know about. Maybe she was doing some digging around and accidentally made a few mistakes, y’know, it happens!

He then says he wasn’t supposed to play the record he found (since it was placed in the wrong cover), but it’s okay because it works anyways. The song that plays is True Faith by New Order.

(Fully speculation based on almost nothing): New Order is featured on Mike’s playlist, and besides the band fits him well imo. So if this is anyone’s “mind record”, it’s probably his.

More mind/record, ft. Will:

Can’t find timestamp, Mindy says: “Some records, they just don’t belong in this world.”

(She also says directly after: “Whether you’re hosting or hiding out in the basement..”)

As for why they might be “swapping places”, Kate Bush explains it herself:

"... the song is about swapping places with another person in an attempt to understand things from their perspective...”

“It's saying, if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem...”

Which reminds me of Eddie’s finale campaign, specifically this shitty ass post I made a little bit ago. Seriously, I hate that one, but it gets the point across.. Mike and Will needing to understand each-other is important.

Nothing new, I’ve actually already made a post like this, I just wanted to put it all together.

We’ve all seen this by now.

This poster, that seems to be portraying all the love triangles, but something’s a little wrong.

We’re shown throughout the entire show that Mike has a habit of being late to things. In Season 4 he wakes up late,

In season 5 it’s Will waking up late (he’s wearing something pretty similar as to what Mike was, as well)

Ignore the shitty execution. Will left / Mike right -> Will right / Mike left

From the show and books, the timeline changes a lot. Even the show mixes up dates and events, it’s impossible to tell which one is true or not.

But as pointed out before: s3 ends 7/4 -> 3mo later, when s4 starts, should be 10/4 -> El says it’s been 185 days since, but 185 days after 10/4 is 4/7.

The shows says 3/22 (Will’s birthday) but the math says 4/7 (Mikes). They were swapped.
