In 1990, the high school dropout rate for Dolly Parton's hometown of Sevierville Tennessee was at 34% (Research shows that most kids make up their minds in fifth/sixth grade not to graduate). That year, all fifth and sixth graders from Sevierville were invited by Parton to attend an assembly at Dollywood. They were asked to pick a buddy, and if both students completed high school, Dolly Parton would personally hand them each a $500 check on their graduation day. As a result, the dropout rate for those classes fell to 6%, and has generally retained that average to this day.

Shortly after the success of The Buddy Program, Parton learned in dealing with teachers from the school district that problems in education often begin during first grade when kids are at different developmental levels. That year The Dollywood Foundation paid the salaries for additional teachers assistants in every first grade class for the next 2 years, under the agreement that if the program worked, the school system would effectively adopt and fund the program after the trial period.

During the same period, Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995: The idea being that children from her rural hometown and low-income families often start school at a disadvantage and as a result, will be unfairly compared to their peers for the rest of their lives, effectively encouraging them not to pursue higher education. The objective of the Imagination library was that every child in Sevier County would receive one book, every month, mailed and addressed to the child, from the day they were born until the day they started kindergarten, 100% free of charge. What began as a hometown initiative now serves children in all 50 states, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, mailing thousands of free books to children around the world monthly.

On March 1, 2018 Parton donated her 100 millionth book at the Library of Congress: a copy of "Coat of Many Colors" dedicated to her father, who never learned to read or write.

So I finally got a part time job. But my first 2-3 weeks scheduled has me at 12 hrs per week MAX. If I can’t REGULARLY get AT LEAST 20 hrs per week… then I need a second job. And, of course, the building management sent out an email that the rent will go up at the end of the lease in February so that means we’ll have to move.

I just want a part time job where I can make enough money to cover rent and do that for a little while before I look into a part time/contract therapist position. I don’t think that’s asking for a lot! I try to save money and make smart choices as much as I can and 2026 has sucked absolute fucking shit for me, particularly in terms of employment and finances.

Having grown up with the wound care approach “douse everything in a liberal amount of hydrogen peroxide,” it feels very weird to follow current best practices: Clean then apply a thin layer of Vaseline. But it does work! My knees are healing pretty well and I got a part time job! Minimum wage, but, hey, it’s something.

Taking up Japanese as a side project for myself has reminded me of something.

So like a long time ago I had a professor that I absolutely adored. She happened to be Japanese American. She grew up speaking Japanese at home but never really spent a lot of time in Japan. She mostly spoke with other Japanese Americans and read books.

So one day early in her teaching career there’s an exchange student from Japan who’s having a hard time understanding a concept so she explained it to him in Japanese and then he looked absolutely rattled. Like in shock. Pale.

This is how she learned that the way she speaks Japanese makes her sound like a gang member.

Japanese doesn’t exactly have cuss words in the same way as English does but imagine that the nicest professor you’ve ever had pulls your paper over and says “Okay listen here you little piece of shit I’m gonna fucking explain this to you. Violently.”

This (studying in Chile for a year) is more or less how I realized my two PhD-having, tenured professor expat parents raised me to speak the most disrespectful and swearword-riddled version of Spanish possible (with plenty of ancient slang I didn't know was slang thrown in). It was like:

I grew up in Texas, and all my Spanish teachers spoke/learned different Spanish variants. I had a Cuban Spanish teacher, a From-Spain Spanish teacher, and a Puerto Rican Spanish teacher. Notably, those variants of Spanish are… markedly different from much of the TexMex/Spanglish spoken in Texas!

Me, talking to a friend who was raised in a bilingual English/Spanish home in Texas: …la piscina.

Friend: Oh. We just call it “el pool.”

One of my uncles by marriage is Cuban and Cuban swearing is to Mexican swearing as Australian swearing is to American swearing. Meaning he says “coño” (sometimes translated as “fuck” or “cunt,” generally considered to be very offensive, but some Spanish dialects/peoples use it for emphasis, similar to saying something is “bloody awful” or “fucking terrible”) ALL THE TIME. My uncle and his dad would be happily yelling at each other in Spanish, using coño every other word and I could always tell who else spoke Spanish in the vicinity because they’d be staring at them in horror.

I looove Jenny Holzer’s older text art. She skillfully composes and arranges these ambiguous, contradictory, provocative statements in such a way that the viewer/reader is left grappling with the uncertainty created. Very much the “dialectical conundrum,” seemingly opposed/contradictory concepts that can be true at the same time.

I don’t enjoy her current work because it’s so much more… blatant. “TRUMP IS A LIAR” in red LED on the sides of a truck driving through Manhattan. It lacks the contradictions that draw the reader/viewer into further consideration. On the other hand, I can understand why Holzer would become more unipolar in her work. Some viewers, commentators and critics considered her “Lustmord” series as obscene, offensive, even anti-feminist because one of the pieces portrays the experience/perspective of the unnamed, undescribed rapist/abuser/murderer (the other pieces portray the experience of the victimized woman and the experience of someone who observes the aftermath/the victimized woman’s child). When people react to a person demonstrating the ability to CONSIDER how a violent person MIGHT think as if this ability is equivalent to agreeing with/condoning violent misogyny, the urge to make art with an UNMISTAKABLE message is understandable.
