some things about the trailer:

desaturated. no music. no faces. disney knows that the original fan base is all grown up; they know their audience. this is gonna be dark. Im looking forward to seeing how the story has grown, and how they reflect modernity in stock car racing.  Lightning was first, then fourth when we saw him. He’s still a leader, at least in this race. I’m considering that this might be a flashback. Maybe a race a few years ago that made him lose his edge. In the tentative plotline that Pixar released a few years ago, this movie is about McQueen trying to catch up with a racing world that’s left him behind. Maybe that world didn’t leave him behind; maybe he left it. Number 20 (2.0?) has nitrous. This isn’t a racing world that’s advancing– this is a racing world that’s cheating. I have a few more NASCAR-specific criticisms, but that’s the biggest one rn. 

some things about his crash:

it looks like Lightning’s up to his old tricks– a three-wheel burnout only happens if the tires aren’t changed every fifty or so laps (depending on the track). This was his fault. In real racing, if you lose control of the car and can’t regain it, you’re told to let go of the wheel so you don’t break your wrists trying to wrestle with the steering. That’s what happened; Lightning let go. The anatomy of the crash: his tires wore out, causing him to lose control. sometimes cars can make it back to pit road if this happens, sometimes they can’t. It happened at turn 3 on the track, where cars are letting off the accelerator and wall crashes happen often. When he swerved, that’s where he went– the wall. After a wall crash, depending on the severity, a car can either come to a dead stop (which causes the front to crumple and compromises the engine), or it rolls. We see sparks. Lightning’s spoiler is hanging on by a thread. By the time we see him in that last clip, he’s already rolled two or three times, maybe more.

It is necessary to understand that the police army at Standing Rock wants to start killing the water protectors. You don’t deliberately inflict hypothermia on people, especially older people, unless you are cognizant of the fact that this can be lethal. Their use of water cannons in this context is lethal force. I imagine they’re delighted at the opportunity; they’ve only held off on live ammunition this long because massacres are bad PR. 

(Oh, and a quick sidenote: “rubber” bullets are not made of rubber. They are metal pellets with a thin rubber coating. You can absolutely kill or severely injure someone with a rubber bullet.)

Water protector Sophia Willansky was critically injured last night – she’s in surgery facing amputation of an arm – after being hit by what is called a “stun grenade” while distributing water bottles to her fellow protectors. “Stun Grenade” is an interesting euphemism for a concussive weapon that is not significantly less destructive to living things than a regular grenade. If you would like to see what a “stun grenade” does to a person’s body, you can google Sophia Willansky, but the images are graphic and I’m not sure she has consented to their release. Rest assured that it’s fucking horrific. This isn’t, like, “set phasers to stun”; this is “use words that sound nicer for stuff that kills people” and it’s scary and garbage.
