in the lives they lead, the little wins they accumulated were somehow the best. nonsense over death was always preferred, especially when it came to his small circle of friends and companions. once in her room, he sat himself on an empty chair. "whiskey," he tells her, adding, "take it any way i can get it," with a joking smile.

"neat it is," flora chuckled pouring two fingers worth of whiskey into each of the glasses. there was little ice to be found around here. that was saved for the saloon down the block. she closed the bottle and turned around, walking over to him and holding out a glass to him. "here you go. you comfortable?" she took her own glass to her dressing table and pulled out the bench from underneath it so she could sit facing him.

"Thanks." The thick accented Texan murmured softly, offering her a courteous nod in appreciation. "Ain't gonna say no to some company. Got nothin' behind it though. So..." He didn't judge her, but he also didn't like the idea of feeling as though he was using her. She wasn't an object for his amusement, or anyone's. In his opinion, at least. "Name's Jonathan. Good to meet you, Ms...?"

before she'd come further inland, kiera had never been ms anything. they weren't big on respect where she came from or at least she hadn't earned it. it took some getting used to, but now she could navigate it with ease. "kiera. nice to meet you, jonathan." she pulled out the seat next to him and invited herself to sit. "what brings you here tonight?"

"you sure?" kiera leaned an elbow on the bar and gestured to the bartender. "get the man another beer?" she'd leave him alone if he wasn't interested. she wasn't that persistent. "let me keep you company. that's free unless you don't want it to be."

maya didn't mean to completely disconnect with the people she grew up with. she loved them, she loved her home in montana, but she needed to let herself grow away from everyone. becoming an adult to her had meant making friends, finding another community at her university. and then there was the part of her that couldn't help but see her choice to get away and go to college as the right choice over staying and raising a kid when they were so young. she knew better now. "i shouldn't have done that. i was wrong to cut you off like that. i couldn't see that you might need a friend back then." she could have helped, but she was on her high horse about it. but maybe they'd needed the time apart. there was no knowing what it would have been like if something was different.

"i think i'm being fucked with," maya pulled the red stained gloves from her hands as she exited trauma one. she rolled her shoulders back and stuck her hand under the sanitizer dispenser, falling in step with doctor ellis. "this is pittsburgh, what do you mean i'm getting the dumbass rez injuries here?" and on the night shift too, served her right. before she was asked, maya continued "stable hand went to check on the horses because of the storm going on and one of 'em kicked and the force shattered the tibia seriously fucked up their knee." every year you could count on there was at least one really bad horse related injury back home, but until now that certainty hadn't followed her to pittsburgh. "i desperately need coffee," hopefully nothing came in in the five minutes it would take for her to fill a paper cup and maybe even the time it would take to drink it. "what came in while i was in there?" the thunderstorm raging outside probably meant that they were bound to get a few more weird ones tonight.

"you know, you wouldn't have had to wait in line much if you'd actually come to the ed." with all the trouble she knew the duttons got into, it was a surprise they didn't spend more time in the ed at bozeman general, then again, they had enough money to skip the line and get taken straight to surgery or whatever department they would be eventually sent to when they passed through the hospital doors. the days of the dutton family money throwing the weight of their name around were mostly over. still, with a wound like this kayce dutton would have been escorted back to a bay immediately.

she knelt down to one of her kitchen cabinets, pulled out an old tackle box and lifted it onto the counter. "keep holding that towel there while i get set up." maya began by unwrapping and unfolding a sterile table cover and bringing it over to her kitchen table where kayce sat. she brought her forceps, needle driver and a couple packages of sutures. she also brought over a bottle of alcohol to clean the wound. "i'm not going to ask what you were doing cause i'm pretty sure i don't want to know, but should i be looking for any shrapnel or rocks in there?" she'd long since forgiven monica for running off with kayce and they'd mostly forgiven each other for the fight that followed, but a new more responsible grown up worry couldn't help but arise whenever he got himself into messes like these.

real friends were hard to come by sometimes, so ransom followed flora up the stairs. he didn't mind letting her boss him around a little - didn't hurt him or his pride none. "at least its nonsense and not death you're bringin' me," he answers with a grin. staying alive was the important part of a job like his.

flora couldn't agree more. "little wins." as she reached the top of the stairs, she found the key dangling off her belt. when they reached the door to her room she unlocked it and took off her shawl, draping it over the chair by her dressing table. "make yourself at home, ransom." she stood by her bar cart and set out two glasses before turning back to ransom. "what do you take again, hun?"

ransom, unlike the men she spent her time around, knew she was no fool. he'd known enough good women to know there wasn't a single one of them that could be called that. "yes, i am but i wish you had nothing to warn me of," he replies with a smile.

"don't i know it." she was exhausted by it too, though no doubt if town were quiet there wouldn't be such good business. "come inside, it's getting cold. i'll fix you a drink to make up for bringing you more nonsense." flora didn't wait for him to reply, instead leading him inside and up the stairs to her room where her notes and a bottle of whiskey waited.

flora chuckled and stepped off the porch to greet him. "and you're thankful someone told you that bullshit ahead of time every single time, aren't you?" she was a good listener and while she was working men talked around her and assumed she wasn't smart enough to understand. she didn't mind sharing what she heard with ransom.

the club was different since avery left. not that kiera blamed her for leaving even a little bit. she knew dancing for cowboys and tourists wasn’t what avery wanted to be doing with her life. it wasn’t what she wanted to do with her’s either but she didn’t know what she wanted to do yet, avery did. or at the very least, she’d was finally wanted for something else better suited to her skills. driving all the way up to the yellowstone from her apartment before work was probably silly, she could be using her free time to sleep, or get groceries. instead, she was awkwardly walking from where she’d parked over to the bunkhouse and the corals. she didn’t quite fit in here yet, she had the hat and the boots but she didn’t have the attitude. she also still hadn’t gotten on a horse. she felt out place to a degree that almost made her turn around and go home. that was until she spotted avery and some of the other wranglers riding back from one of the pastures. kiera kept going, waiting for her by the nearest fence. “you look happy,” she observed approvingly. “and sweaty. i wanted to see how you were doing.” she was pretty sure all the guys avery worked with probably knew where she’d come from, but it still felt a little like she shouldn’t mention they used to work together where anyone could hear. “you good up here?”
