Why Dazai Slapped Atsushi
The infamous scene in which Dazai slaps Atsushi after battling with Q is personally one of my favorite scenes in the entirety of BSD.Ā
Iāve definitely seen some takes that criticize this scene for completely valid reasons (itās kind of a clichĆ© toĀ āslapā someone out of their mindset, Dazaiās behavior is unjustified, etc.)
However, I still think this scene represents an important point in Atsushi and Dazaiās respective character development, as well as their budding mentor-student relationship.
Atsushi
Letās rewind to before the slap took place.
Atsushi truly believes in his ability to protect the agency, a moment of confidence that shows how much heās grown from the beginning of the story.
Even when heās under the influence of Q, his ideal toĀ āprotect everyoneā remains.Ā
This constant repetition of the need to protect others emphasizes how strongly rooted this ideal is implanted in Atsushiās mind. It also sets up how Atsushi places immense pressure on himself in order to carry out that ideal.
As a testament to his growth, when faced with the intrusive thoughts of the Headmaster, he still pushes onwards by accepting the power he has and using it for good. Take note of his choice of words here:Ā āIām no longer who I used to be. Iām not longer powerless!ā
Atsushi separates his past self and future self in diametrically opposed ways. His past self is a crying child, powerless to save himself and others (or āa piece of trash,ā as he says). His future self is confident, heroic, and has the necessary power to save others.
This panel is intentionally framed in an ominous way that changes once you learn that Atsushi was the one being controlled by Q.
At first, Atsushi uses his power to save others, upholding his ideal and proving to himself that heās different from his past self.
In actuality, itās Atsushi hurting the person he was supposed to protect, with the very strength that he was supposed to protect them with (thus the menacing silhouette).

I like to think that Adrien gets very into cats vs dogs arguments. Heād argue with Nino who says dogs are more loving and playful by saying,Ā āAt least cats can actually land on their feet and LIVE nine more times. Cat lives matter too but whateverā then he adds an eye roll and everyone just kinda goes silent when they realize how offended Adrienās actually getting but itās kinda interesting seeing him worked up about common trivial things so they keep annoying him on purpose
ADDITIONALLY imagine this argument post-reveal
Chloe:Ā āDog Noir would be way better than that stupid black catā
Adrien:
Adrien:
Adrien:Ā āDog Noir sounds utterly ridiculous Chloe what the hellā
And Marinette can see how genuinely pissed off and a little hurt he is but finds it amusing that he canāt exactly use his superhero persona to remind everyone heās the damn cat whoās risking all of his lives to save them and the rest of Paris weekly
Then Chloe gapes at the fact Adrien responded to her like thatĀ then starts saying some really offensive and degrading things about Chat and you bet Marinette stands up and yells back at her for offending her wonderful partner and starts bringing up all of Chat Noirās cool moments. When you look at Adrien you can tell heās absolutely in love with the girl and internally smug about the fact Mari thinks his moments are cool even if sheāll say different when he visits her balcony tonight
I want Chat and Marinette to grow close enough to the point that after a particularly grueling and already emotionally exhausting week, Adrien transforms and visits Marinette late at night. Theyād sit on her bed and heād softly bring up all the things weighing down his mind, knowing that Ladybug wouldnāt approve of all the details heās giving in risk of their identities but he trusts Marinette anyway. Though thatās when Marinette realizes just how much she worries for her partner and his well being and that maybe, maybe, sheĀ really does feel more than friendship for the black cat. Slowly she realizes that his home life isnāt ideal in the slightest, and that for most of his life he mustāve grown up sheltered and alone compared to other kids their age. Marinette then makes it her goal to be there for him more, in and out of the mask, because really, she will always cares more about Chat Noir as a person under all those carefully crafted secrets than upholding their anonymity
Time passes and Ladybug hangs around more after akuma battles, stops refusing hisĀ āmini datesā as he calls them to cafeās and little restaurants, and she hadnāt realized how much more carefree and Marinette sheās beenĀ around him lately. This becomes ever more apparent to Chat Noir as he takes note of her laugh, sass, teasing, hobbies, kindness, way of showing affection, and it isnāt long before he puts everything together and kisses her atop the Eiffel Tower when heās absolutely sure the woman in his arms is not only his lady, but princess. Ladybug doesnāt stop him or think twice before engaging because after all that time of crushing over Adrien, she easily saw the similarities in Chat with the way he effortlessly works around the press, brightens up whenever they do something normal like go out for ice cream or to the park for fun, and how his eyes glowed with warmth in class when she overheard him telling Nino about his amazing first sleepover with hisĀ āamazing and cute friendā they held the day before. Combine that with everything she was told that one quiet night on her bed, the answer is as clear as ever as she finally takes the red rose from Chat who hands it to her with aĀ āIām glad it was you all this time, Marinette.ā And she couldnāt agree more
Chat Noir has really pretty hands. Hot hands? Sexy hands? Iām not sure how to explain it but the claws just make his hand movements hit different. Gosh I just sound like a weirdo now please donāt take this the wrong way
Headcanon that Chat Noir knows Marinette is Ladybug because of his advanced hearing picking up on her talking to someone whenever he's 'distracted.' Eventually he figures out its Tikki! but says nothing about it because he knows Marinette will freak out and panic if he told her. Still, he's the happiest man in the world knowing his brave, sassy, strong willed lady is his expressive, determined, and hardworking classmate who's been sitting behind her since day one
