Ikuemi Ryou's My Boy Back Home (1991)

After 2 years, we bring you another Ikuemi Ryou manga. But this time, it's a stand-alone story. Ikuemi Ryou's style is very realistic and has its own flavor. You can feel it in the dialogue, in the pacing, in the characters... There's a certain dynamism in her work, the narration and the characterization don't feel stiff and generic. It doesn't feel like she "created" this story, but these kids exists and we are just having a peek at their lives.

I urge you you take the time to look at all the background text in this oneshot. Not only they killed poor shielshi, but they also add a lot to the atmosphere of the manga. You can feel that you are in an actual classroom with all that background noise!

This was one of the first projects we picked up when Attolia and I started Seldom Scans on the side, and we were supposed to release it some time after Obake Tango. With everyone's permission, I want to get emotional here...

As usual, get it directly from the oven or read it here. We have uploaded it under Mitsumete Itai, because My Boy was included in its second volume and we want to make life easier if anyone wants to get a Japanese copy. Which you should. Because being into older manga means you must hoard all the manga.

JUNE time! - Naka Tomoko's Tokei no Ue no Ribon (1982)

Fancy another crazy story from our beloved June? @bishonenspit was awesome to scan the magazine for us, Key took 40 years off the scans, Grumpy & shiel duo once again worked x60 times faster than the translator...

This story was compiled in two other books from what I can tell, but because they are print only, adding this story to your collection is not that easy. But for the sake of trackability, we'll be uploading this under the latest compilation it was featured in.

So were we... This porny josei doesn't quite give us what it promises on its first page, but nevertheless, it's super fun and has a prime husband material seme.

I couldn't track down the original publication information for this oneshot, but my got tells me it was featured in a josei publication.

This will be the other (and last) manga we'll be doing from this artist. Enjoy!

Hi!! I recently stumbled upon “Images” by Chiki Ooya and I ADORED IT (it was all I was looking for in a piece of art, it really stuck with me) and then read her other manga that is available online (Candy to Choco bon bon; Snow Maidens) and I was wondering if you knew where to find others of hers? I know she stopped making manga to become an illustrator, but did she ever write other manga? Is the lack of stuff by her due to a lack of translation?

Her art is exquisite indeed. Sadly, her works are not digitalized (except for Kaiten Mokuba which is only available on cmoa, which will not take my gaijin credit card, grrr). As a result, you will have to hunt down her books in print, which are very likely already out of print. That's why I'm not sure if all of her published works are collected in volumes. You can see a little list of her published volumes here, but I'm not sure if that list is exhaustive. Apparently, she even worked for the kashihon market, so there might be more.

Your best bet is to check sites like Mandarake, Surugaya, Mercari, YAJ, Kosho etc. to get your second-hand copies to read more of her.

Jigoku de Mes ga Hikaru bonus oneshot: Oniazami (1976)

We are done with the shoujo Frakenstein story, but this Takashina Ryouko volume had another short story included. Oniazami was also published in Nakayoshi, and will leave you wondering what the little girls in 1976 were doing with all this drama and trauma.

Yamagishi Ryouko - Pannychis (1976)

With this, all three stories in Siren are scanlated now!

This story takes its name from an actual poem, André Chenier's Pannychis. I want to leave it here as well, because poetry translation is another level and I'm far from anywhre near that level:

Ma belle Pannychis, il faut bien que tu m'aimes; Nous avons même toit, nos âges sont les mêmes. Vois comme je suis grand, vois comme je suis beau. Hier je me suis mis auprès de mon chevreau; Par Pollux et Minerve! il ne pouvait qu'à peine Faire arriver sa tête au niveau de la mienne. D'une coque de noix j'ai fait un abri sûr Pour un beau scarabée étincelant d'azur; Il couche sur la laine, et je te le destine. Ce matin, j'ai trouvé parmi l'algue marine Une vaste coquille aux brillantes couleurs; Nous l'emplirons de terre, il y viendra des fleurs. Je veux, pour te montrer une flotte nombreuse, Lancer sur notre étang des écorces d'yeuse. New Pick! - Jigoku de Mes ga Hikaru by Takashina Ryouko (1973)

We proudly bring you a shoujo maddo scientisto story from a very prolific shoujo artist, Takashina Ryouko: Jigoku de Mes ga Hikaru (A Scalpel Glints in Hell).

I, the translator, have decided to pick this up after reading Julia Popek's article on 70s shoujo manga artists in the French magazine Animeland's issue no. 250 dedicated to Rose of Versailles. Barely two minutes after I read that a shoujo Frankenstein exists, it was in my shopping cart. We are lucky that Nakayoshi decided to reprint the first edition to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Let's hope more old shoujo get this treatment.
