when i was but a wee lad i randomly got fixated on certain names (mostly made-up ones) because the specific combination of letters was satisfying. one of these names was azlin/aslin (pronounced either as azz-lynn (like in the word 'jazz') or aze-lynn (like in the word 'maze'), so when i signed up for roblox i wanted my username to be azlin. but azlin was taken so instead i used az1in. a couple years ago i added two extra Zs cuz i thought it was just better. it's also only pronounced azz-lynn now, i don't like the pronunciation aze-lynn anymore

I’ve shared my username’s lore before but no harm in doing it again!!

“Praythisdemondies” is a lyric from a song that was stuck in my head when I made my tumblr account. No I’m not going to tell you what song it is. It’s embarrassing.

My actual internet name/handle though, Toasterswing, is the result of a series of telephonelike username modifications that I did with myself, which eventually ended in the combination handle I use today. I feel more comfortable going by Toaster online nowadays, but fun fact I also used to go by Swing! The first username I ever came up with that wasn’t When I Was Seven was “The_Posessed_Swing” (yes possessed was spelled wrong on purpose). It was based on the swing we had hanging on our porch that would swing around looking like it was absolutely possessed by a demon every time there was even a little wind, and I thought it sounded funny as a username. After that I started keeping a list of things I also thought sounded like funny usernames in case I ever needed one, and have slowly been using them. One from that list was Homosexual_Toaster, which is my Artfight username (another one was my Ao3 username, Suddenly_Lesbianism lmao). Over the years as I found the need to be a bit more consistent with what I go by online, I started doing alts on those original two usernames, like “The_Posessed_Fridge” for my instagram (…we also had a fridge that liked to make very ominous noises). The proper combination ultimately came with the need for a signature I could put on my art, because previously I’d been signing with my name, but I no longer wanted to have my name be public knowledge online. It could easily have ended up as “Possessedtoaster” or “Toasterfridge” or something else, but “Toasterswing” just kinda stuck, and it’s been that ever since!

Woaw. Long yap. Yeah! That’s my history ladies and gentlemen and assorted badasses!

someone has actually mentioned this before on one of my posts, but my username is a reference to a line from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, where the narrator comments "If he be Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek." it was intended to be divorced from my other frequent online usernames (which all involved the word "corgi" in some way) and I was absolutely obsessed with Jekyll & Hyde at the time, so I thought it would be a good username. 128 is one of my favorite numbers, but I've been meaning to remove it for a while because it looks a bit silly tacked on at the end.

Okay! So! Alex was my chosen name for a while and Karumi was the name I chose for my now sona! It used to be a fanchild of a shipp I liked when I was younger but I ended up getting really attached to them and never quite ended up letting go of them. So I just assimilated said name into my artist name (which was originally karumiyeah. Do not question my 12 year old self) and then it evolved to what it is today. I actually need to change it because. I do not use Alex anymore as my chosen name LOL

I just finished The Three Musketeers, and this might be the best book I've ever read in my life, mostly because every single character is batshit insane and drunk for 90% of their Big Plot Decisions. Lights up on d'Artagnan: he's new in town and he's already making enemies. He meets his three best friends by scheduling back to back duels with them, under the assumption that he won't have to fight the last two if he dies in the first one. He is twenty years old and has never even heard of a frontal cortex. This is made evident by every word he says. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are supposedly in their 20s-30s, but barely any better. The moment they have any money at all, they siphon it directly into their alcohol budget. They make enemies everywhere they go and get into almost as many duels as d'Artagnan. Also worth mentioning: they see this crazed 20-year-old and choose to devote their lives to him simply because he has good vibes. We've got the cardinal, who seems only tangentially related to any kind of clergyhood. We've got the king, whose main personality trait is that he HATES his wife. We've got the queen, whose main personality trait is cheating on her husband. We've got the Duke of Buckingham, who is (unfortunately) English. We've got the Love of d'Artagnan's Life, aka somebody else's wife but he sucks so he can get cuckolded. And finally, we've got the prototype female manipulator, a character written with such intense feminism AND misogyny that I scarcely know what to say about her except "go off, queen" as well as the occasional "I don't support all women, some of you are stupid." Do yourself a favor and commit 5-12 weeks to reading this book, if for no other reason than the part where d'Artagnan tells a guy "I'll spring you from jail, don't worry, it's all part of the plan!" and then immediately forgets him in prison and flirts with his wife.

It's been just over a year since Deltarune chapters 3 & 4 released! I did the 3D work, which mostly means Tenna 📺 I figured it's been long enough to share some "behind the scenes" stuff, starting with a look at the Maya file for his static poses...

I'd individually render the poses to get that early 3D shine ✨ Here's some of them at their original resolutions! I would work from text descriptions from Toby, and sometimes there'd be a Paint sketch to help out. Gigi drew the concept that I modeled from and some poses too!

I had a lot of fun pushing myself to match the dynamic poses Toby had in mind for Tenna - making him so crazy and expressive was something I couldn't have done without his prompts. He'd draw the faces on afterward too, which really brought Tenna to life!

Here are some of the Paint sketches Toby drew to help me with specific Tenna poses! I love seeing his drawings LOL, genuinely really good and evocative 👍

There was a time when I was struggling to capture what he wanted for these specific Tenna poses… Until Toby acted them out himself, and I thought, "Ah, it's like that. I understand." and then I was able to make them just how he pictured them.

When looking through the renders and choosing what to share, I laughed at these two… Remember when Tenna had a gun? Remember when he bent over in a very specific way that might remind you of another, different image? No? Maybe you don't…? Well. Don't worry about it.

These ones are cute… Tenna is pretty cute sometimes! Has anyone ever thought this? Actually, before people knew he was going to be a strange 3D sprite the Whole Time, I was worried people wouldn't like the style and it'd sour people's views on him. I'm glad that didn't happen.

Toby thought it would be funny to have Tenna do some really smooth, mocapped animations sometimes - specifically free to use ones that often pop up in other things. An extra funny part to me is how many frames these take up in the game, and how his tails are stuck to his legs…

Speaking of mocap, Toby wanted Tenna to use custom mocap animations as far back as 2016 - Ten(na) years ago! I got an Xbox Kinect at the time and learnt how to set this up, but then never used it. Here's a look at messing with mocaped stuff again in 2022. So Normal.

Don't bother trying to help him here, he's just being dramatic 🙄

I particularly like these poses - I think I improvised most of these just based off the context they get used in… I always liked posing his tie and coat tails as if they were also parts of his body he could move. Which I guess they are?

After I rendered out the individual poses in high quality, I'd force the color palette to be limited to just a few shades and then I'd shrink the result down to pixel sized sprites. Like these! I'd tidy them up a little, but they'd really get improved on at the pixel scale by Clairvoire.

As well as Tenna's sprites, I also worked on his intro "movie"…! Seeing people be completely overloaded by this on first playthroughs would always make me laugh. In game, there's a ton of extra editing done by Everdraed, but my unedited cut looks like this ⬇️

This was the entire storyboard I had to work from, and I'm realizing now that there's the note "put him in car etc" that I never did and actually don't know what it would mean exactly. Working on this had me listen to the accompanying audio many times, but it's good so it's okay.

For the 3D Ralsei clip from the intro, Toby really wanted it to look a certain way, and drew more sketches for guiding me with this part than any other. They genuinely helped.

Remember how Toby's original storyboard has the note "covered in slime and shrinks"? That meant I had to learn how to make 3D slime. You can see my tech advancing here.

I'm really happy with how the final Tenna animation at the end of the intro movie turned out! It wouldn't look as good if it wasn't for some 2D animation to reference from SmallBuStudio, so thank you to them for the help! Tenna is cute… Huh, I already said that…?

Every one thinks Tenna is Asgore because they cant see past gender and so they think because Tenna is a boy it means he has to be the boy parent but really he is Toriel. He is so Toriel.

ok I DO have ONE hot tip.

So. You're like me. You have ideas and you want to see characters move around in sync with some audio. But also you need to cut as many corners as possible. BUT ALSO you really want it to feel good to watch to justify the effort.

My tip is this: use tweens but as few as humanly possible.

To explain: so we got these key poses we wanna use while somebody says something

That's 3 drawings!

If you draw out a whole scene at this rate, you'll get the point across! This totally works! You can have all kinds of cool poses and expressions and it will still be an unreasonably large number of drawings, and an impressive feat to finish!

BUT since we're already here....why not trick everyone into thinking it's "smooth" by making THEIR brain do HALF the work, at LEAST.

^ That right there is only 3 additional drawings!

Tween Type 1: bridging the gap

so the difference between these 2 frames is huge, and as a consequence playing one right after the other feels choppy.

Now I haven't explained the second kind of tween yet, but the way we decide between them is by asking ourselves, "how controlled is this movement, and where is it fastest?"

This guy is unfolding their arms and then placing a hand on their hip. This is a more controlled motion, because the limb stays close to the body at all times, where there's not much room to swing around.

Also, if you do this in real life to test it, the two slowest parts are separating your arms at the beginning, and then resting your arm on your hip. Between those two parts, it's mostly just your arm swinging into place relatively fast.

The fastest part will be easier for your brain to fill in for us, so the tweens are only added to the slow parts.

The arm starting to unfold, and the arm slowing down to rest on the hip.

The second screenshot, depicting the "end" of the movement, is overlaid onto the NEXT frame rather than the previous, because it will need to look very close to that for your brain to process the new pose properly.

These 2 new drawings have created just enough of a bridge for your brain to register it as a movement rather than two separate images.

Tween Type 2: overshooting

This kind of tween is used for faster, less controlled movements, or anything that "squishes." Here I use it for the guy bringing his arm up, and his eyebrow moving.

Once again overlaid onto the frame AFTER this tween, so you can see the "overshoot" effect.

Since the arm is out in the open air, it will swing with the momentum it took to raise it, and the guy's musclea will need to squeeze it back into the place they intended to hold it at. So it moves past the final resting pose (overshoots it), because it is too fast to slow down before it.

Overshoot is kind of the opposite of bridging the gap. Where bridging the gap shows you something starting to move, and then slowing down; overshoot shows you something winding up (omitted for this chill guy, but it's a frame "pulling back" on the pre-movement pose where the frame I did add is "pushing" on the post-movement pose), and then struggling to come to a complete stop.

But just like bridging the gap, you don't have to draw he middle because the movement is fast, so your brain wouldn't have paid attention to it anyways.

So yeah thats how I play tricks on people's minds without REALLY animating! Go nuts!

Since the tweens are onscreen for much shorter times, don't be afraid to let them be messy, so that you can try out a few different variations to see which looks right. I redrew that arm coming to rest on the guys hip 2 or 3 times, and it was originally supposed to be an overshoot, but the bridge ended up looking better!

theres actually a name for this! this is actually not tweening, this is the step before — the breakdown phase!

Breakdowns are the between frame between two keyframes. Depending on how much you favour one frame or another, you’ll change the feeling of the animation when you inbetween further.

it’s an important step that defines the feeling of the motion!

Anyway I shan’t say much more than this since you’ve already given some great examples of different ways to approach a breakdown, but this is a nice video on the topic if you want to learn more:
