Model Cheryl Tiegs calls plus-size SI swimsuit cover 'unhealthy'
http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/26/living/si-cheryl-tiegs-ashley-graham-unhealthy-feat/
Cheryl Tiegs has had a big opinion on plus size fashion. She thinks fashionâs increasing acceptance of full-figured women sends a bad message, a clear reference to plus-size model Ashley Grahamâs appearance on one of three 2016 SI Swimsuit Issue covers. In the article she quotes, â I donât like that weâre talking about full-figured women, because itâs glamorizing them, because your waist should be smaller than 35 (inches).â Regardless of Tiegs comments, Ashley didnât slow down. She sees women who are plus sized as just curvy women who look beautiful.Â
I think this source was helpful because it helped me give a specific example in my papers to support my topic. It shows that even women tear down their own because something is not ânormalâ in society. Ashley Graham started modeling at the age of 16 and she sees women who are a little bit curvier than normal beautiful. This article showed that while we try to compliment something about a person through certain attributes, we still have the common idea that women should look a certain way in as far as appearance.Â
This is very interesting. Â I think all shapes and sizes are beautiful because it adds variety. Itâs what makes a person unique. But since society only thinks skinny is beautiful, it makes bigger sizes look bad, which isnât true. This would be good to include in your final paper.
Miley Cyrus on Jimmy Kimmel Live! [Interview by J. Kimmel]. (2015, August 27). Retrieved March 29, 2016, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePCxz76qzr8&index=3&list=PLOgeWiwSGmxjblFPLubCKg_Us_SNChrd-
In this interview, Jimmy Kimmel addresses Miley Cyrusâs crazy outfit, which included a sparkly jacket, no shirt, and breast pasties. Kimmel makes it clear that he is slightly uncomfortable with Cyrus being topless, but Cyrus states that though it makes other people uncomfortable, her outfit choices make her more comfortable and are often good conversation starters. Cyrus argues that âhumans arenât afraid of the human breast, itâs the nipple thatâs the issueâ. She continues, âthe nipples are covered so somehow thatâs okayâŠwhich is insane because the nipple, what you canât show, everyone has, but [the part] that everyone doesnât, youâre allowed to show.â The two then go on to discuss how long Cyrusâs revealing outfits and virtual nudity would continue. Cyrus tells her experience at a nudist beach, which made her question her support for nudity when she saw older people. However, when asked if she would ever decide not to appear in public nude anymore when reaching a certain age, she joked that âthose old people did it to me, so Iâm going to do it back.â
Miley Cyrus speaks for feminism and against common societal views in this interview. She addresses the rejection and negative connotation of the female nipple. Though both men and women have them, only men are allowed to show them publicly. She questions the fact that it is acceptable to show every part of the breast, which is specific to the female anatomy, except the nipple, which is common to both males and females. By questioning this norm, Cyrus is challenging pop culture and society, and changing the authenticity. In this way, she is spreading awareness of and supporting feminism through her âNew Mileyâ outfits. She used the inevitable questions and conversations about her wardrobe choice for good, by raising awareness, challenging social norms and redefining authenticity in pop culture.
I think itâs interesting how people arenât comfortable with the human body. For many centuries, nudity did not seem to bother people in many areas. But today, even showing too much leg makes people feel uncomfortable or men wearing tank tops is unacceptable in certain places. I think the human body is a beautiful thing and if you want to show it off, you should show it off. I agree with your comments on this video. Miley Cyrus is challenging the views of women in Society and I like it.
BRATTA, P. (2015). THE PUBLIC PANTS: A VISUAL RHETORIC OF GENDERED AND CLASSED IMPERIALISM. Visual Culture & Gender, 1019-28.
In this article, the story of how women started to wear pants is talked about. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton made a statement by wearing pants. These were the first women to publicly and openly wear them. During their time, it wasnât lady like to wear pants. But these women didnât care. This was also during a time when women were fighting for equal rights among men. This is an interesting article because today women everywhere wear jeans and pants, probably more than men in some areas. Similar what celebrities do today, it only takes one person to start a trend.
QueenLatifahVevo. (2009, Oct 7). Queen Latifah- U.N.I.T.Y. [Video File]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8cHxydDb7o
There are positive images in hip hop one example is Queen Latifah. A true pioneer for females in hip hop and a positive example for young women. She produced this song âU.N.I.T.Yâ which lyris express a positive message to all women around the world.
I think that this a great cultural artifact to use in my final paper because she talks about how the women in hip hop industry need to demand their respect from their male counterparts, the men need to know when they use derogatory words about women they are talking about their mothers, sisters and wives. Women will no longer tolerate it and men should not make excuses for their dysfunctional actions.
This is a very positive song. I enjoy listening to Queen Latifah, especially her song âJust Another Dayâ. Artists like Queen Latifah, M.C. Lyte, and Lauryn Hill are ground breakers in their art. They really established a place for women in Hip Hop. If only their were more women artists like these women today. This will be a great song to reference in your final paper.

The article that I found online explains the way that GPS-enabled cell phones are used to track the travel patterns of adolescents. It says how it is ideal for parents to be able to track their children for safety reasons or for other things. The article says that they gave 15 women a cell phone to carry around for a week and they found out that the tracking systems are very accurate and they are a reliable way to track people. The researchers recorded that there was minimum to no technical difficulties in the study.
I can use this in my final essay to support my argument because of how the GPS is so accurate. The study showed that the accuracy is on point for showing the location. It would be a good idea for a child to have a cell phone specifically for the parent to track where they are, but not any further. If the child is online talking to people and that person somehow gets their location, it is a dangerous situation. Many different things are able to happen when a child has the ability to send their location to a person with the touch of a button.
Risks and Safety for Children on the Inernet: The UK report. (n.d.). Retrieved April 20, 2016, from http://eprints.lse.ac.uk/53058/1/__lse.ac.uk_storage_LIBRARY_Secondary_libfile_shared_repository_Content_EU Kids Online_EU_Kids_Online_Report_Risks_and_safety_for_children_on_the_internet_2010
This is a very interesting subject. I honestly think tracking kids and wear they go makes them become rebellious because they donât really have freedom. The trust just isnât their. I think the relationship between parents and their children work better if the child is only restricted to a certain point. When kids feel like they are always micromanaged or have no freedom, they tend to act against their parents and their behavior becomes poor. This is a great article for your paper.
In the early 2000s, rapper CamâRon (pictured above) and his rap group Dipset made a statement by being some of the first rappers to wear pink. In the hip hop world, men are known to be hard and masculine, especially in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They rapped about drug dealing, girls, and violence in most of their music. Dipset was no exception. This was really a big deal when he stared wearing pink. This opened up the door for pink to become the color of choice for men in fashion. This will be very helpful in my final paper because Camâron and Dipset are trailblazers. They added their own originality to fashion, wearing pink furs and having pink cell phones. Men during this era would of never thought of doing this. This trend is probably one of the most authentic trends to come around in fashion.

Gadet, Steve. (2015). Hip Hop Culture. Caribbean Quarterly, Vol. 61 Issue 1, p75-97. 23p
This article talks about how ever since the 1980s, hip-hop has become a cultural product that is being sold and bought all over the world. Also how Hip-hop culture, mostly through rap music, became a legal way to escape from social exclusion and poverty for a category of young people in America and in Europe. It also talks about how this culture gives them a specific language, a common notion of authenticity, common values and common landmarks that transcend their own ethnic and cultural heritage. Lastly it talks about hip hop culture in/on the different Caribbean islands, and how it differs.
I think that that this journal article will be useful in my paper because it talks about hip hop culture moved to the Caribbean islands and how globalization does not hinder a cultural movement from having a local and unique shape. In helping us to grasp the relationship between music, local and popular culture.
I agree that hip-hop is a very big thing around the world. In my paper, Iâm writing about how hip-hop influences fashion across the world. I think this article will be very helpful in your paper.

T. (2011). Kim Kardashian Melts Down Over Lost Earrings. Retrieved April 13, 2016, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_TpRU2hdf8
This is a short clip from one episode of the Kardashian sisters reality TV show âKeeping Up With the Karsahians.â While on vacation in Bora Bora with her family, Kim Kardashians NBA player boyfriend throws her in the ocean and she proceeds to lose her diamond earring. Immediately Kim starts crying over the diamond earning that lays on the ocean floor. In her interview she complains hoe her boyfriend is rough and never should of thrown her in the ocean. The fact that she wore real diamond earrings to the beach is completely neglected.
I think this helps show that while the family claims to be your âaverageâ american family, they are still far from it. The average person would never wear diamond earrings to the beach let alone own a pair of earrings worth 75,000 dollars. Even more astonishing, the average person would never be able to cope with the fact that they lost a 75,000 piece of jewelry by only crying and getting over it within a few minutes. This is a prime example of how the sisters problems do not compare to real world problems setting them aside from your average people.Â
I completely agree with this. If your average American family would of lost 75,000 dollar earrings, they would be depressed. Most people donât even make that much money in a year. This is very interesting.

Kovach, S. (2007, August). The Hidden Dangers of Cell Phone Radiation. Le Magazine.
In this article the author speaks about how cellphones give off electromagnetic radiation that can put you at risk of developing brain tumors. The author stares âCell Phones Reach the Market without Safety Testing.â Which means that its possible for cell phones to have some type of unsafe side to them. They also state the dangers: âGenetic damage, brain dysfunction, brain tumors, sleep disorders and headaches.â
I can use this article on the health dangers of cellphone use in my essay because they are speaking about how it is dangerous for someone to use a cellphone all day and every day. With that being said, it is another reason on why not to give your child a cell phone. They are constantly texting different people, checking social media, or calling a friend to talk. If these kids didnât have a cellphone at such a young age, they would reduce the risk of developing these health problems. Parents need to be more aware of these ricks that they are taking while they hand their children these deadly items.
This is surprising. I did not know that cell phones could cause genetic damage or even brain tumors. It is scary to think about because just about all of us use cellphones daily for most of the day. This will really be a great help to your presentation.Â

Prince, Emmett George. (2006). Hip Hop Culture. Santa Barbra, California.
This book breaks down and organizes Hip Hop culture from its beginnings and takes a look at its influence on in the United States and around people and popular culture the world. He states that Hip Hop was the solution, the product of self-determination, self-realization, creativity, and pride. Hip Hop culture has gone through a number of transitions. I has come from local, non-profit-bearing culture international, multibillion-dollar industry that is now to a model of success. Hip hop culture not only chronicles changes but also attempts to create a frame work through Hip hop.
I think that this book will be useful to use in my final paper, because he talks about the beginning ages of hip hop culture to almost to the present day now, he also talks about many different artists from Salt-n-Pepa, Tupac Shakur, Run-DMC, NWA, the Wu-Tang Clan and many others.
This book sounds really interesting. The beginning of Hip Hop is very interesting to me because you have guys like Ice-T, Run-DMC, and others who all paved the way for a lot of different things. For example, people didnât really swear in rap songs until Ice-T, which is interesting. Wu-Tang Clan is an amazing group. In my opinion, if they would of had better management, they could of been the best selling hip hop group of all time. This will be a great source for your paper!
Mittica, C. J. (2013). top trends for 2014. Wearables, 17(10), 42-48
This article is interesting because it not only explains how celebrities have made trends popular, material trends, like tablets and iPads, have had an influence on fashion. People are now seen carrying around stylish tablet and iPad bags. They almost look like purses and men and women are carrying them around. Tops now have pockets just to hold tablets! They are especially popular in the medical community according to this article.Â
Movie characters like James Bond have made smart watches popular. James Bond movies have been out for years. He always has a watch that can practically do anything. Now, companies like Apple have created a watch that can do almost anything. its become very trendy in the past two years.
Basketball, football, and baseball jerseys have always been popular. But with the rising popularity of soccer, soccer jerseys are becoming popular. You even see hip hop artists wearing soccer jerseys, and soccer isnât very popular in a hip hop culture in America.
Pop Culture and its authenticity, in my opinion, depends on who and what is trending at the time. What celebrities wear or what gadget or object is popular will dictate the clothing we sport around, whether it be an old style or a new style.
Agrawal, M., Greenblatt, L., & Stack, T. (2008). The 50 Pop Culture Moments That Rocked Fashion. Entertainment Weekly, (999/1000), 114.
This post is about how pop culture has influenced fashion through out the years. Artists and celebrities have had their influence on what people like to wear. Examples are Michael Jackson and his Jheri Curl, or Kurt Cobain and his grunge style. This article is a great example of how people on high pedestals can easily dictate what is in and what is not. Today, if celebrities like Kanye West, Justin Beiber, and Beyonce wore trash bags as the latest fashion, there would be a good amount of people who would definitely follow the trend. This is an extreme, but it only takes one powerful person with a large amount of influence on society.

This article discusses how different reactions to superheroes in popular culture. Moreover the article discusses the reasons why people and children read comics. It discusses how superheroes allow a method for escape and a way for people to conquer their trials and their fears in order to face the difficulties of the world.
I can use this in my paper because by understanding why people rely on comic books and how heroes relate to the issue they face, one can understand comic books impact on popular culture and the influence popular culture has on superheroes.
This post is really interesting. I think it is going to be really helpful for your paper. I know I like to relate myself to superheroes sometimes, especially Spider-man, a nerd who gets bit by a spider and develops superpowers, starting a double life. I like how superman goes from nothing, to having an alter ego where he is something, and is fine with no one knowing who he is. He could easily expose himself and get all the glory, but instead decides to stay humble.
This is another scholarly article that does a good job in explaining why artists put the sex in their videos. It does a good job of explaining that they are doing it for the audience and to get the attention that they need. It promotes a picture of the artist and a way for music fans to remember them. It is amazing the impact that music videos can have on our society and how they view certain things like sex roles.Â
The article has a lot of really good information on how we take in what we are shown and how it affects our everyday lives. It is important for artists to have music videos for the sake of promoting themselves. They use them as a way to show who they are and what they stand for. They want to be remembered for something crazy that they did or something that they know people are going to be talking about. Itâs important that we ask ourselves if this is a good thing or not. Is the influence bad or not (Andsager & Roe, 2003)?
ANNOTATION 4
I really like this post. I like the idea that artists want to do something crazy to stand out and for people to remember them. My paper is kind of similar, as it talks about pop culture and fashion. I think whatever is different, is want artists and celebrities like to sport or show off, whether it be fashion or music. Different is what people will remember and talk about, whether it be good or bad. The fact that these are celebrities and musicians doing it, I think it will make everyone like it, no matter what content the artist or celebrity presents. Artists and celebrities tend to dictate pop culture.

IS THE 90s STYLE MAKING A COMEBACK?
In the movie, Dope, the three main characters are considered â90s geeks.â They love everything from the 1990s, whether is be the clothing, hairstyles, video games, slang, etc. When it comes to fashion in particular, in pop culture today, the 90s style is very popular. You see many kids walking around with flat top fades, Jordans, and jean jackets. You see girls wearing high-waisted jeans, chokers, and wearing baby tees often. Since pop culture is bringing back an old style, does that make pop culture less authentic? Is there any authenticity to this. In the movie dope, I would consider these three amigos authentic in their style because they were 90s crazy but very flamboyant when it came to personality and interests. Together, they created a punk rock band, something unexpected from looking at their clothing alone. But in the real world, I guess you could say that their is some authenticity in the styles that are being reborn. Instead of flat top fades, many young black men are going with a more natural look, wearing their hair curly on the top instead of combed all the way out like in the 90s. Instead of permanents, girls are starting to want that natural look that many women had in the 60s and 70s. Even in old styles, their is some authenticity to be found.

JADEN SMITH AS MODEL FOR LOUIS VUITTON WOMENâS CLOTHING
Clothing is quickly becoming more gender neutral by the day. Women have always been seen wearing menâs clothing occasionally, but now men are starting to wear womenâs clothing more and more. Recently, Jaden Smith, Will Smithâs son, became a model for a line of Louis Vuitton Womenâs clothing. As you can see in this picture, he is wearing a fringe womenâs shirt with a womenâs leather jacket and dress on. Many people know from listening to news about pop culture that Will Smithâs Children are known to be very flamboyant. Their flamboyancy has caused much controversy over the way Will and Jada Pinket-Smith behave as parents, but they believe they are doing the right thing by letting their children be free spirits. Since Jaden is so famous, styles like these are starting to become very popular in pop culture. You now see many men wearing womanâs clothing, and even Young Thug can be seen sporting a dress, even if it is for little girlâs. This is starting to become a new and original style for men, combining dresses (used as shirts usually) and with every day menâs wear.
