If I had only one piece of study advice to pass on, it would be constant summary pages. Every week or two, take one side of A4 and write down everything important by hand from that period. It might take 5 minutes, it might take 30. Either way, when that exam burnout sets in, you will thank yourself. Donāt use the pages as exhaustive study - use them as a contents page for your revision, or as a checklist to see what you do or donāt remember.
šš³š Heading back from a little impromptu holiday to the West. I feel like Iām making good progress on my dissertation and I found out, whilst I was away, that I got into Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford. šš³š
hey guys! So as Iām sure many of you already know, IB results come out the 6th. Itās a stressful and anxious time as we wait for the results to be posted so I thought Iād share some advice/tips on dealing with results.
1. no matter what everything will be ok. Your life and future is not defined by a random number from 0-45. The most important thing the IB provides isĀ not your exam result, itās the knowledge and experiences youāve gained while doing the program. Itās what you do with that knowledge that defines your future. Itās been a said a million times before but itās true: because of all the outside factors like stress, tests do not accurately measure your knowledge. So please do not be too disheartened but your grade and focus more on how you are going to benefit yourself with things youāve gained from doing the IB.
2. your feelings are valid but you are not a disappointment. Itās hard not to feel disappointed when you donāt get what you were expecting, and itās ok to feel discouraged or upset too. Feel free to just take some time for yourself and process your feelings, but remember that these feeling will pass. Donāt let them take over your life, instead use these negative emotions to better yourself. Use them as a way to motivate and push yourself further. Just rememberĀ one important thing: you may feel upset or disappointed but no one feels that way about. You have not disappointed your parents, and most importantly you have not disappointed yourself. Everyone you know loves you and is immensely proud of you no matter what. You are your biggest critic after all.
3. donāt judge yourself based on the results of others. Trust me I know, itās hard not to do that. I remember constantly comparing myself to others during high school and I remember just how bad it would make me feel. I still do it today but I try to stop myself byĀ remembering that we are all unique and different. We all have different standards and no matter what an accomplishment is an accomplishment. I remember one time when I achieved a 17/25 on my biology quiz, I was ecstatic because that was the hardest subject for me and I was sure I was going to fail. I remember overhearing a girl near me be disappointed with her 18/25 and for a minute I felt discouraged, but then I realized my accomplishmentĀ should never be diminished by someone else. So IF YOUāRE HAPPY BE HAPPY and donāt let anyone take that away from you.
4. take care of yourself. It can be easy to fall into a depressed state following a bad result so please take the time to focus on your mental health. Do stuff you enjoy, treat yourself and donāt be afraid to talk to some or seek help.
5. the ib is hard, you completed it, so celebrate! Celebrate the countless hours spent slaving away over your EE, IAs, studying, and celebrate the success of completing a challenging program. CONGRATULATIONS!
hereās a few articles that I found that I thought were helpful:
why many C students end up most successful even geniuses get bad grades sometime why the ones who have bad grades are often the ones who are most successful
Iām always here to talk if anyone wants to. Be proud of what youāve accomplished and whatever hardships life throws at you, learn from them, improve yourself and let it motivate you to be the best you, that you can be.

An Infographic Of Useful Tips For All Types Of Learners
#optomstudies here with a post about university studying! Iāve been reading many study tips masterposts in the community, but some of these wonāt work that well for university. So here are 3 tips for adapting to uni study!
Loose leaf? Notebook? Neither! (but if you must choose between the two, I recommend hole-punched loose leaf - easy to file :D) There is just no time, especially once you get to your higher years, that you will be able to write paper notes especially considering the level of detail that you are required to learn things to get good marks.Ā
When I was studying therapeutics, lectures were more like an essay crammed into 60-80 ppt slides! Using 10pt Calibri, 1.15 spacing, custom 1cm margins - I still had 12 pages for a 2 hour lecture (see below)
Two lectures / week, for 12 weeks! Although this was the most-content heavy subject, my other courses were still way too time consuming to write notes for. Sadly, you canāt summarise much, because MCQs pick at details. Ā
As for laptops,Ā cheap netbooks are only ~$300, but Iād recommend theseĀ really great student laptops.Ā
And yet, you have to wonder why #studyblr doesnāt have more digital notes? Isnāt every studyblr the owner of a computer as a tumblr user? Iām trying to encourage everyone to feel more confident about posting their digital notes as part of the ā#studyblrs get realā tag (see here), so if you have some great typed study notes, please tag me with #optomstudies and Iāll be happy to reblog you!
Read through your lecture slides so that you have a basic grasp of the topic before classes. If you have any readings assigned, do them too. This means that youāll
go in knowing what concepts you need clarified
revise one more time (remember the forgetting curve?)
be much better placed to answer questions and participate in class discussions (get those participation marks!! ;))
find it easier to follow along with much more complicated topics than youāve experienced in high school!
remember a lot more of the topic when you come back to revise later on!
Yes, I know, studyblr blasphemy right? But this is what you do when strapped for time. Particularly with biological/chemical sciences, lecturers will have basically summarised what you need to know on the slides.Ā
Before your lectures, read through the slides (should take about 30 minutes for a 2 hour lecture) and mark/circle anything you donāt understand - then when you get to the lecture, jot down a clarification in your own words based on the professorās explanation.Ā Eventually, youāll find that you have studied the topic well enough to not need your own footnotes.Ā
It takes a little experience to know which professors have slides you can study off (tip: itās usually the ones where you donāt have to write down much) but itās totally worth the time you save!
Hope this has been an informative post about the differences between university and high school studying! Please follow me for weekly study tips, study pics and now kpop vocab lists!
