♕ ROSALIE SELWYN ♕
“SOME BIRDS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE CAGED, THAT’S ALL. THEIR FEATHERS ARE TOO BRIGHT, THEIR SONGS TOO SWEET AND WILD.”
✗ THIS CHARACTER IS → Closed
✗ FACECLAIM → Sophie Turner
✗ HOUSE / YEAR → Ravenclaw / Sixth Year
✗ BLOOD STATUS → Pure-blood
A paradox of sorts, Rosalie is as gentle and poised as an English Rose, yet she is a spirited young woman who craves adventure and freedom. Seemingly incorruptible and pure as the driven snow, she is held in high regard by most everyone, never crossing the border of good taste and civility. Her manners are never less than impeccable and she is perfectly groomed, exceptionally beautiful, and incredibly charming. Yet, there is a part of her that longs to escape the constraints of pure-blood society. While her docile manner and appearance might suggest meekness and submission, Rosalie having been brought up to be the epitome of elegance and refinement, Rosalie is just as gifted and cunning as her older brother, Nikolai. Even from a young age, Rosalie understood the importance of continuing the Selwyn family legacy and dutifully complied, never once allowing her own discontent to interfere with her duties. Despite the fact that she would often dream of someday embarking on magnificent adventures worthy of the books aligning the walls of her father’s study, Rosalie took to heart the lessons of self-sacrifice and family loyalty her mother had taught her, and continued to do what was deemed as necessary by her parents. More Nott than Selwyn in looks, Rosalie takes after her mother, Amara, in just about every aesthetic aspect. A traditional Nott beauty with fiery red tresses and iridescent blue eyes, she does not outwardly resemble her father and brother in any visible way. Yet despite the differences in appearance, there is no denying that Rosalie is Julius Selwyn’s daughter.
Intellectual, cunning, strong-willed, and diligent, she too, like Nikolai, is very much a protégé of her father. Since childhood Rosalie has shown little interest in womanly pursuits such as singing, sewing and dancing, only pretending to find such things fulfilling for the sake of her mother. What Rosalie truly enjoys is the pursuit of knowledge. She is known throughout Hogwarts for being extremely intelligent and hard-working. Unlike most wizards who depend solely on their magical ability, Rosalie learned to rely on logic, and is capable of deducing information that many others miss. Rosalie’s emphasis on logic also makes her somewhat critical of others when they display poor judgement and skeptical about accepting anything without proof, as opposed to Nikolai who allows his intuition to lead him. She is often viewed as the voice of reason amongst her friends, and is the only person who can talk sense into her brother, acting as his anchor. It is because of her love for learning that Rosalie wishes for the freedom to travel around the world like Captain James Cook and Charles Darwin, dreaming of exploring the world and learning about different cultures and people. Dreams that stem from the countless days spent in her father’s study, looking through her father’s collection of books, daydreaming of someday traveling to the places she would read about in the scientific and historical journals her father had collected throughout the years.
Yet, Rosalie is fully aware of what is expected of her by her parents and pure-blood society. Regardless of whether she wants to or not, Rosalie is to be betrothed to a young man of her father’s choosing once she turns seventeen. And while the possibility of an arranged marriage between her and a suitable match has always been present in the back of her mind, Rosalie had always hoped that she would have more time to convince her father to allow her to choose her own destiny. She cannot help but envy those who are granted the freedom to make their own choices, to forge their own path instead of having someone else govern their entire life. Rosalie’s wish is to see the world through her own eyes instead of living vicariously through others. Usually when the subject of the war comes into conversation, Rosalie shakes it off dismissively. To her, it is not something that needs to be pondered over just yet. Not for her, anyway. The Selwyns had never been overly invested in the ideals that many of their fellow pure-bloods held to be true, and as a result, neither Rosalie nor Nikolai place much stock in the idea of pure-blood supremacy. And because of this, Rosalie has decided to remain neutral, regardless of whether people like Narcissa Black approve of her choice or not. Yet, there is no denying that Rosalie has grown wearier, noticing the way the lions and snakes are constantly at each other’s throats. She knows that It’s only a matter of time before things boil over.
✗ NIKOLAI SELWYN → Brother. A solid foundation that keeps it rigid while men collapse and empires falls. They two are in different locations, he is the biting cold of the North and she is the warmth of the South that touches you like butterfly kisses. One cannot, and will not, exist without the other. However, the relationship is far more complicated and intricate that can be seen from a casual observer. Rosalie is a moral compass that guides her brother into the light, while Nikolai is the dose of reality that keeps her grounded. Her wandering heart will never stray too far when she understands there is a home to come back to, a person. With pure-blood propriety creating walls, Rosalie fears that one day her light will not be enough to keep her brother’s morality stable. And, if so, she worries she might lose him forever.
✗ JAMES POTTER → Estranged Friend. Rosalie remembers the Gryffindor from summers past when his mother would visit or vice versa. She had been attached to the scrawny boy with missing teeth and scraped knees, one who didn’t let a rough tumble take him out of the games they played. Their explorations of the woods came to an abrupt halt when letters came and luggage was pulled by a curious child bumbling with excitement over the journeys to come within the castle walls. Sorted in to different houses, Rosalie saw resonant changes in the Gryffindor boy. There were three other boys whose limbs she swore were actually stitched together, and a green-eyed girl that consumed all of his daydreams now. Rosalie didn’t feel as if she fit into his equation anymore and her heart grew distant, sharp retorts filled with exasperation began being pointed at him. The day she closed up her heart entirely to him, however, was when she saw a flash of cruelty to Severus Snape come from the same boy who cared for each of her little injuries as children.
✗ EDWARD TONKS → Best Friend. Many would say there is bravery in associating with a person your family would disagree of. But, it doesn’t feel like bravery to Rosalie. Bravery is withdrawing, giving up those once treasured loves for the sake of your soul. Yet, Rosalie didn’t have to relinquish anything with Ted. He was a boy that took a wingless bird and taught it to soar. A thirst of adventure, her friendship with Ted has always felt like a story book that doesn’t have an ending. The journeys will only grow longer and explore more that her heart will combust with joy when she graduates from Hogwarts and pursues more reckless days with her friend. His named engraved on her heart, a friendship that always cheers the Slytherin up, Rosalie finds herself going out of her way to return the favor. Mostly to take his mind off a particular Black sister whom Rosalie despises for misleading such a kind soul. Only a person willing to be their whole self with Ted deserved him, and Rosalie will remain a guardian over his heart until then.
✗ SELENE AVERY → Interest. There is something about Selene that has always called to Rosalie, the older Ravenclaw capturing her interest from the first moment they met. Perhaps it’s the fact that the eldest Avery reminds Rosalie of her brother; recognizing in Selene the same ambition and pure naked striving that defines Nikolai. Yet, there is also the fact that both Selene and Rosalie share a similar burden, one that neither of them can escape. Like Rosalie, Selene is viewed as nothing more than a pawn to further the ambitions of her father, to be used as he sees fit without consideration for her needs and desires. Selene’s relationship with Nikolai is also quite compelling, Rosalie taking immense pleasure in seeing her older brother knocked down a peg.
