In a world where everyone has superpowers, you're the only one that doesn't. Which is why government is knowing on your door trying to figure out how that even happened.
Your local radio station, of which you are one of twelve avid listeners, has been getting weird lately.
Your friend asks you to go to a fencing tournament with them. Once you arrive, two things become abundantly clear: one, those are real swords and two, your friend is the reigning champion.
The world has stopped spinning. People wake up one day to the sun high in the sky and they sleep that day with the sun in the same position.
everyone is killed instantly by the force from being launched by the earth Break Checking us into oblivion.
You are break-checked into space, inertia your enemy as always. As you are swallowed by oblivion, you see the face of a god you never believed in.
You are a migratory bird flying North for the summer. Your speicies is competing with another species on who can get there first, and you'll be damned if your kind loses.
The world has stopped spinning. People wake up one day to the sun high in the sky and they sleep that day with the sun in the same position.
You meet a vampire while walking downtown drinking someone's blood in a back alley. The next day on the news, you learn that the dead man was a predator, and some obscure subreddit has been crediting a long-time vigilante for the death.
Shadows are meant to be warders against Evil. To have a shadow was to have a guardian. You are pretty sure your shadow's been taking lunch breaks, considering how your life's been turning out.
You are transported into the fantastical world of your favourite game. Except you're a character in the game too -- and someone else is controlling you now.
A deer springs across the light of your headlights and you hit the breaks hard. You are startled.
Because deer have been extinct for over a hundred years.
"I don't wish to put you in danger."
"We are always in danger."
"We're going to need you to cover a shift today. Yes - yes - no, I know you're usually scheduled on the second lunar cycle's fourth season, but we're struggling with the portal to hell opening over at our second store."
Everyone wants to know the secret of your cooking. They don't believe you when you tell them that you have a dragon lighting your stove.
"Ay, get out of my kitchen, brat!" I snapped, not looking up.
A burst of giggles behind me, and the pitter-patter of several children making away with freshly baked flatbreads. I couldn't help but smile, feeling the skin around my eyes crinkle. I was getting old. Perhaps, I should find an apprentice.
As if hearing my thoughts, a long, scaley neck poked through the open window. A large head rested on my shoulder. I patted it lightly, getting flour between her scales, before turning around to wash my hands.
"Make yourself useful, old worm."
A huff. And the stove lit in a splatter of indignant fire.
"What? Don't get moody, we are both old worms," I said, finally turning.
The dragons head looked at me with mild offence, before pulling away from the window. Her blue scales shone purple in the sunlight. And her fire, hot and brilliant green, was baking your bread.
If only people believed that dragon's-fire was the best for cooking. No, everyone though dragons were creatures to be tamed, beasts to be slain. Idiots.
But -- but maybe one day, someone would believe the magnificence of these creatures. Would know they were most useful when they were willing, and that respect went a long way. God knows, I've been trying to teach these kids that.
Said kids were outside now, petting the dragon's scales, moutful of bread. They would take my food back home to the village and tell stories of my dragon. No one would believe them. No one needed to. As long as these kids kept coming back.
You have the perfect morning routine. And not even the sound of approaching sirens or the smell of a rotting corpse was going to change that.
You are working a night shift alone when the lights go out. When you come back from running the backup generator, someone is waiting at the register. Something seems off about them.
You and your friend group are on the grad trip to a small town by a lake. Except, there is something strange about the citizens of this town, and something stranger in the lake.
You are eight years old when you see the forests move.
