in the first couple of years, everytime Shane and Ilya would hook up, Ilya would usually leave right away. this saddens Shane but he tries to not make it obvious. sometimes Shane tries to make an effort to know more of Ilya. “Russia is intense, are you going back”, internally he’s, “he wanted Rozanov out of the hotel room, to not pull him back in bed, to kiss him before he goes because this might be his last chance” but he wants Ilya to stay. Shane is struggling literally with his inner demons. from the very start, Shane wants Ilya to stay and then it uno reverses to Ilya wanting Shane to stay. if that’s not the greatest parallel, then I don’t know what it is.

Many people in the comments are saying “trauma”, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. It’s called Childhood Amnesia, and it’s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to “trick” your brain into remembering with different tactics.
This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.
This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is “stored in the body”, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories won’t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

You know what? Fuck it I'm adding more context. Sesame Street has talked about the topic of death more than once and it's done with such gentle carefulness without watering down or censoring the heaviness of the situations. It treats heavy subject matter with respect and dignity and has been for DECADES. From the early 1980s:

Hell, they even cover the devastating heaviness of MASS SHOOTINGS without censoring or watering anything down.
They've been doing this for YEARS, and it's ALWAYS handled with dignity, respect, seriousness, understanding, and love.
Whenever I see people censoring words because it "might offend" someone or the big ad companies that are currently trying to run everything? I just want to say to them: "What? Is Sesame Street too mature for you?" Because really...what the hell are we doing.
Mister Roger's Neighborhood also covered difficult topics with respect, age-appropriately, and without pulling a single punch. It's crazy that we've worked ourselves up so much that we're self-censoring like it's always been the norm.

I'm not sure when this clip originally aired, but it was likely sometime in the 1980s. They talk about murder and, incredibly by today's standards, what sort of emotions (anger, fear, loneliness) might drive someone to hurt or kill other people + how we can manage our own difficult or painful feelings.

au where shane has a burner twitter account that he uses to keep up with hockey stuff, not just players and stats but what the commentary is from fans and talking heads, and one day he sees a take from a podcast bro that pisses him off so bad he HAS to tweet about it. so he replies to the podcast with the most devastating one liner you've ever heard and suddenly thousands of people are following him and asking for more takes etc and he becomes a pretty popular account in the hockey world (and beyond bc the tweets are just too good) and crucially!!! he is always hyping up ilya. like if a ref makes a shitty call he's coming to ilya's defense immediately. and of course at some point ilya follows him too. and the whole time he's becoming more popular on twitter nobody knows it's him, his mom brings up 'that rozanov superfan on twitter' at dinner, hayden brings it up in the locker room, etc, and shane is just like. laughing nervously. yeah i've heard of them i guess. meanwhile he didn't even realize he was hyping ilya up so much he was just giving good hockey commentary. and then ilya brings up his superfan while they're at the cottage. i'm on the cover of the fucking game. i have important hockey superfan on twitter, you are jealous. and shane would have to decide whether he's going keep lying or face the humiliation of telling ilya the truth
