While this is fun, not everyone can necessarily get away with doing something like this without experiencing even more severe harassment or possibly violence.

I know no one is actually advocating doing this as a serious tactic (it’s literally just a video for fun), but here’s what you should know about avoiding a bad encounter with the police in a public space:

1) Greet them politely when they greet you, no matter how rudely/suddenly/abruptly they greet tou

2) If they ask you or talk to you about anything–and I mean LITERALLY ANYTHING–you ask them (again, politely and calmly) “Am I being detained?”

3a) If they say no, then you say “Then I will exercise my right to walk away. Have a nice day.” Be sure to walk, not run, if you can manage it.

3b) If they don’t say yes, but don’t give you a straight “no” answer (they’ll often say things like “we just wanna ask some questions” or “can we just have a conversation” like the cops do in this clip; the most extreme answer you should be prepared for is “do you want me to detain you?” or some other threatening statement), continue to ask (again, I cannot stress enough that you should be calm and polite in this interaction) if they are detaining you or not. Keep asking this a few times and if they still don’t give you a straight “yes” or “no” answer, state that “If you are not detaining me, then I will exercise my right to walk away. Have a nice day.” Like in 3a, try to walk, and not run, if absolutely possible.

3c) If they say they are detaining you, just say, “I will then exercise my right to remain silent,” and as that cheesy lawyer video says, shut the fuck up.

Unfortunately there is no guarantee that violence will not be enacted upon you if you are detained; however, this method may be your best bet at avoiding said violence.
