     His thumbs twiddle back and forth idly -- perched upon the edge of a chair, thoughts are barely registering in his head ( in one ear, and out the other before they can be completely deciphered ). Around him, voices of fellow followers whispered about and debated on what actions they should take ; but Severus sat still as a concrete stone. His mind was swirling around the prophecy that he had only caught small pieces of -- child, Voldemort, July -- all words that he could have only pieced together to create one assumption: that a small child will ruin the progress the Dark Lord had made. It had made Severus shudder that now, around a table that felt like hollowed bone against his fingertips, they made detailed plans on how to take the life of a child and secure the Dark Lord’s fate --- a plan that HE had initiated. Days ago, he happily relayed the information to Voldemort in hopes that he might rise in the rankings, and because his obligation ( more specifically, the tattoo that slithered against his forearm ) held him accountable for everything he had heard. Today, he felt sick to his stomach -- churning deep in the pits of his body, his body silently convulsed at the thought of LILY EVANS dead. && he knew she was part of it all. 

     Only when he looks up, eyes no longer glossy with the distracting haze of his day dreams, did he realize that the meeting had come to its conclusion, and Severus had little idea where the plans had been going from there. What felt like hours ago, they had been trying to speak of spells and now, they were all dispersing -- all with the idea of DEATH in their minds. Sicker, now than before, he stands from his chair, pauses a moment to let his shaking knees gain their strength, and he steps away from the table. A child could die because of him -- more importantly, Lily. His eyes flicker up, and he catches Narcissa ; across the room, in the shadows, and silent. He straightens, balls his fists, and clears his throat. 

     ‘ Narcissa - I presume Draco is . . . well? ‘

   Almost as if unfazed by her presence, Severus continues to pick calmly through the books on his personal shelves. He had been here before, sorting and determining what published words had continued to be of value to his personal collections, and what could simply be discarded. A small pile, nearly to the height of his ankle, had begun to accumulate next to his leg, consisting of things such as outdated Herbology publications, or unused guides to hexes. Rowena, now somewhere behind him, had continued to chat away, but Severus pays no mind. In fact, her presence was one of the things in the castle that he hadn’t minded, and while she had a tendency to drone on, she is a pleasant distraction from mindless small talk with various ghosts, or content-centered discussions with colleagues. In fact, Severus often finds himself picking her brain on various techniques utilized in previous decades and, much to his benefit, she had become a source of value for publications. 

    Today, however, Severus’s mind had been scattered about -- he was preparing for three detentions that evening, an entire afternoon of marking examinations that he expects to be lacking in grades, and what he’s sure would be another uneventful supper. Her chatter behind him had been, unfortunately, gliding blissfully into one ear and coming right out the other one unregistered. Plucking a blue book from the top shelf, he drops it into the discard pile and takes a step down the ladder. Her comment on the book is the only part of the conversation he fully registers, and he’s certain it’s due to his contempt for any student and their mischievous ways.  

     ‘ Perhaps, if you can seem to recall their appearance of recount their name, I can see to it that they are .. properly disciplined. ‘

   NEED was a funny word that had elicited interesting thoughts from Severus. It was such a weak word, implying that one could simply not survive without whatever they had been seeking. The Dark Lord NEEDED power ; he NEEDED to play his part. Whenever anybody needed anything, whether it be good or bad, they always seemed to rope someone other unfortunate person into their situation. Severus, for the most part, managed to keep himself out of situations he had little interest in helping. Neutrality played a large part in his tasks ___ the Malfoys were notorious for luring others into plans ( Narcissa, perhaps not much, but Lucius was a leech ). Little eye contact and apparent lack of interest could go a long way, and luckily, Severus never ran out of the two. However, he was a piece in a much larger puzzle ; DRACO was a new piece introduced and, therefore, Severus was now needed. He, too, had become roped in to an unfortunate situation. 

   But the concept of needing made him feel as though he were suddenly cemented into the chair in which he sat. Now is where the game got tricky, and although he’s sure Narcissa’s brain only tumbled around the thoughts that her son was a new piece in the Dark Lord’s game, he’s certain that his brain is churning with more thoughts than just that. Unmoved from the chair, he has already silenced her to the situation ______ he knows the problem, and the minute the words escape her mouth they become REAL ; too real for the both of them. They were on a timeline, now, both of them ( different timelines, though ). But the walls are closing in on Severus, and breaths came shorter now. He can almost feel the shelves of books behind him pressing against his spine, and instinctively, he sits up straighter. Much more rigid now than he had been upon her arrival, he’s feigning the face that he’s simply interested in helping the situation - that he’s interested to help. His hands reach for his goblet of elf wine on the side table, and a steady sip calms the twinge in his stomach that he can’t quite shake. CONCERN, maybe, for Draco and his life. He’s a piece of this puzzle that should have been left in the box. 

   ‘ I cannot change The Dark Lord’s mind. What he has decided is his word, and his word is … definite. However, aware of your situation as I am, I can offer help. Shall you accept the help, then it will be given in full, no questions asked. Without it, we can only hope that Draco succeeds, contrary to what he is expected to achieve… ‘

      // Torture Devise-Inspired Headcanons 

Judas Cradle: Would your muse rather suffer physically, or be humiliated?     Severus, without a single doubt, would rather suffer physically than be humiliated. Humiliation reflects poorly on one’s character and therefore makes them seem WEAK because everyone can see when someone is humiliated. In his own mind, it would make him feel as though he were less, I don’t know, respectable? Whereas suffering physically can be easily hidden and therefore, doesn’t reflect poorly on one’s character to everyone around him. It’s really two things, I suppose: either they don’t know and it doesn’t effect how he is seen, or they do know and they fear him because they know what he can withstand. So for sure, he would suffer physically before he was humiliated. 

Pear of Anguish: In what ways is your muse sexually deviant, if at all?     Just like any human being, Severus has sexual tendencies. However, I think that ( at least in my own opinion ! ) any sexual deviancy is really in his younger years as opposed to his older years. Old body, you know - doesn’t really work anymore. However, in regards to sexual deviancy, it’s really a lot of light bdsm --- handcuffs, mild restraints, and things of that nature. He wouldn’t be opposed to light marking, though anything that would be easily seen by others in his everyday attire would be forbidden. Hitting, or anything of the sort, would be forbidden for him because it has a tendency to stir up unwanted memories ( and, in general, he respects his partner(s) and therefore isn’t going to put them in a position where they are uncomfortable or unequal to him ).      I can imagine that maybe in his younger years, he experimented with things such as any ‘true physical pain’ in the bedroom, and it really sparked up a lot of unwanted memories and feelings and really negatively impacted his opinions on how sexual interactions should go. He’s also very picky and choosy with his partners, but honestly that will be saved for another time in which I really sit down and write this shit out ! 

Cat’s Paw: What’s your muse’s reaction to gore?     It is as normal to him as staring at a potion, honestly. I’ll just BRIEFLY touch on this because, spoiler alert: I’ll be expanding on it in the future. However, in my opinion, to become a Death Eater you have to be almost -- I guess, immune to blood, gore, death, etc. Right? I mean, if the Dark Lord asks you to kill, then you’re going to kill and you better not feel a thing about it ( kind of reflects back to that humiliation or physical pain thing, eh? ). So I imagine that blood and gore isn’t really a stunning thing to Severus. First off, with an abusive father, I’m positive that he has bled and he has seen his mother bleed on multiple occasions. -- and then, in the beginning of working with Death Eaters, I’m sure they experienced a variety of tasks or were sent on a variety of ‘missions’ ( for literal lack of better term ) that they witnessed things that would make any man’s blood curl. For Severus, while they were nauseating and they bothered him, they weren’t absolutely terrible. However, with the years to follow and etc., I’m sure he becomes more immune to blood/gore and even though he still thinks it unnecessary, it doesn’t bother him.

     The corridors were not the same : dark, dreary, and quiet, he oftentimes hates walking them. During the day, they are plagued with students bustling class to class, during the night, they are plagued with ghosts of his past. He can hear his name in the way an eerie wind hits the walls of the castle, or in the way the click of his heel is the only thing he can hear - the portraits, once lively and exuberant, sit still as though they had never once had life. The castle, much to his dismay, had become like something from his nightmares - the worst part about it is that it was his own doing. Despite the unsettling differences, however, he must maintain a facade of cruelty, after all, he was still the face of Dumble- VOLDEMORT’S revolution. Though in the same castle, the hostility between himself and Minerva now boiled and raged more than ever before ; once tolerable co-workers, the sight of him, he’s sure, boils the blood within her body and if she had thought about taking his life to protect her students then he couldn’t blame her. He wouldn’t be surprised. This morning, he had sent her an OWL, requesting to meet in the early evening. Now, he strode firmly along the corridors and dreaded every second of it. 

     He lets his knuckles hit firmly on the center of her office door once before he lets himself in. Once, her office was warm and welcoming - though scarcely decorated and not as messy as what his own once was, there was a time when he didn’t feel uncomfortable. Now, as he stands in the door frame, he realizes that like the rest of the castle, the demeanor of her office has changed, too. He won’t step any further, no ; he will address her from where he stood. ‘ Mr. Potter’s whereabouts are unknown, both to myself and the ministry, I presume . . .  ‘ he drawls, ‘ I am coming to discuss the procedures in the event he decides to visit our campus, and should he come and speak directly with you. ‘

           It’s no secret that her friend and the four fifth year Gryffindor Boys did not get along. Hardly a day could pass without any of the throwing insults and snide remarks (and an occasional curse) at each other. It was exhausting for Lily. All of Gryffindor gave her shit for being friends with Severus, and he in turn never hesitated to talk about how awful her fellow house mates were. She sat now, only half listening to whatever it was Sev was talking about. Something about where Remus Lupin might be going every month. Lily wondered too, if only because Remus’ absences came without warning, leaving her to do prefect duties alone. But it wasn’t her business. “Why do you care so much about where he goes anyway?”

     Drowned somewhere in his own theories and flipping back and forth on the plausibility of them, he couldn’t register that Lily had only been half listening. His course work, spread out on the table before him, remained untouched in favor of quiet gossip and the hope that his hypothesis could pull Lily further away from the Gryffindors ( and, in the long run, give him an interesting piece of information for future reference ). A smart boy, he’s not blind to the coincidentally times disappearances, and just as he opens his mouth to utter the words, he’s cut off. Why does he care? He cares because . . . well, he doesn’t exactly know. Maybe it would just give him some ammunition against the boys ; something to truly make them question if they should throw a hex at him one more time.    ‘ It just seems odd. Gone some nights, but around the rest of the time. We get points off if we’re even seen out of bed, every picture in this school watches. But he slips off and nobody says anything? ‘

Are you a 'snape-apologist' and do you ship snape and lily evans/potter?

    It’s interesting to me how these two things go hand in hand oftentimes. However, whether it be to your relief or your unhappiness : no, I am not a Severus Snape Apologist and no, I do not ship Snape and Lily POTTER. I feel as though, being a new blog, it should be expanded upon, so if you are of interest and seek further than my two answers, you may continue to read below the cut.

   First and foremost, I will address the Snape Apologist question with a big, fat, no. In fact, I think one of my biggest pet peeves is when I discuss Severus’s character arc with anyone, and the first thing they respond with is “I thought he was bad and then I found out he loved Harry’s mom and was just trying to help Harry and he’s been great all along!” No … and can we look at how he became a Death Eater in the first place? For himself, lest we forget that he was originally spying for Voldemort and was the one who TOLD Voldemort about the prophecy. He only felt guilty about telling Voldemort when Voldemort decided Harry was the issue, and Severus suddenly realized that Lily was in trouble.                   Need we forget that he begged Voldemort to spare Lily’s life instead of her unborn son and her husband?  Or how he treated Harry, Neville, and basically every student at Hogwarts? I’ve developed headcanons (that I have to write out) about Severus and joining Voldemort’s ranks and all this b.s., and this post could go on for days, but in reality the clear answer is that I don’t. His actions are deplorable, tbh, and he’s an asshole. I just like problematic characters – easier to write. 

     On the note of shipping with Lily, I won’t lie and say that at one point, I did ship them. But that was probably 7 or 8 years ago and before I really truly looked into it. Right now, and as it has been for a while, I don’t ship them because it’s SO DAMN TOXIC.  come on, y’all … Lily deserves better. I love my greasy git, but I just don’t think it would have worked. I hate even thinking about it tbh because it requires both characters to be changed SO much from their actual personalities that they wouldn’t even be ‘Lily Potter’ and ‘Severus Snape.’   Again, something I could drain on about but no. I do not ship them.
