@vivaciousandcharming sent a letter to mary macdonald: ‘‘ what are you doing ? what’s wrong ? ’’
prompt: river song dialogue.
Thus Lily's voice chimes from behind Mary, and the sound causes her to tense up. For a moment she considers lying to her, tell her that nothing is wrong, what makes her think so ?, but this thought is pushed aside just as quickly as it came, with added disgust at herself for even thinking so.
It's wrong to lie, even worse it's to lie to Lily and not tell her that… ❝ there's… ❞ Mary begins, but her voice falters. It's here that she turns to face her friend, and after a moment of visible hesitation, she walks towards her. ❝ Snape is outside, that's what's wrong, ❞ she tells her then, and the trembling note of fear in the tone of her voice sounds clear despite its low volume. She could have told her this without leaving the entrance, of course, and much louder, but she didn't want the sound to carry outside and alert Snape that she was talking about him, referring his message.
Lowering her head, Mary looks up at Lily from under her lashes, then flickers her gaze away, looking around to make sure there is no one else in the common room or is about to make an appearance from the dormitories. It's just them, now, but soon their housemates will return, and if they, too, see Snape outside what will they do ? What will happen ? Will they tell him to leave, like she should've ? ❝ Before I entered, he told me that… that he doesn't want to leave, that he is going to wait outside until morning for a chance to talk with you, ❞ she continues, then adds: ❝ what should I do, Lily ? Should I go tell professor McGonagall ? ❞
