Even In The Darkest Times [B.B.]
Request: Could you do a Bucky x reader where they were together in the forties and when Steve goes back, he sends her into the future so she can be with Bucky while he stays in the past with Peggy? -&

Bucky swears he’s never turned so fast. He’d recognize that voice anywhere, even if it’s been years since he’s last heard it.
And at first, he doesn’t believe it. Because this can’t be true. No way. You were long dead, and it had been too long since he’d last seen you. Way before he lost his arm and forgot who he was, way before he even fell off that train. Bucky hadn’t seen you since the day he left to join the military.
You looked exactly the same as you did that day. With your hair curled back, a pretty blouse on your shoulders tucked into a skirt with some flats. It had never left his mind, even after all these years; even after all he had endured. When he’d forgotten who he was, he’d forgotten you, but there was an image in the back of his mind of you, like this, waving goodbye with barely concealed tears.
“I’ll be honest,” you continue, your lips curving into a soft smile as you take a small step forward. It’s feels like it’s just you and him, even though Sam is just behind him and Bucky doesn’t even notice Steve, much older than he’d been seconds ago, there too. It’s just you he sees. It’s always been you. “I still don’t completely understand it all. But I saw Steve and he said there was a way I could see you. You left not an hour ago, and now, here you are.”
Bucky wants to reach for you. Hold you in his arms. But his hesitant, scared. Scared that the moment he touches you, you’ll disappear.
Luckily, you take the first step. You take one, then another, and then another, until you’re before him. There’s just inches of space left between the both of you, and Bucky’s lips are just parted, not saying anything, as you reach a hand upwards, just as hesitant and scared as he feels. Your fingers touch his cheek first, just a touch, and Bucky feels himself gasp. He hasn’t felt your touch in over seventy years.
Then, your hands reach hair, touching his hair. The ends of it at least. Bucky watches your head turn, eyes falling on his metal arm and his breath spikes as your hand falls on top of it. You’re touch is gentle, even if he can’t really feel it. Your fingertips just caress the ridges in it, before your eyes meet his once more.
“Look at you,” you whisper, voice barely audible. “You look like a completely different man.”
Then, somewhere, somehow, Bucky finds it inside himself to speak. “Y/N–”
“You don’t have to say anything, James,” you smile, reassuring him as your hand falls to his own. You thread your fingers through his own, squeezing. “Steve explained everything. I understand… and I can’t imagine what you’ve gone through.”
Then, despite himself, Bucky feels his eyes water. Before he knows it, his head is dipping, falling into the crook of your neck and pulling you close. His arms bound around your waist, his grip tight and secure and everything you’ve missed. And he just holds you, whispering; “I missed you.”
“I missed you too, James,” you sigh, “even if it was only an hour for me.”
Bucky lets out a soft chuckle, the feeling of it bringing a smile to your lips.
And then, as you stay there, in Bucky’s arm, your gaze wanders, meeting a familiar pair. It’s Steve, you realize, but much older. It causes you to pause for a moment, confused, but then you remember how you got here in the first place and you just watch as Steve smiles.
He’d done it, you realize. Finally saved his best friend.
Let me know what you thought?
