Performance art# 5“Abduction”

This art piece was a little more challenging for me than many of the others.  I had a lot of ideas but I was trying to get a specific message out in my work.  I finally decided on the idea of abduction.  Children are abducted all the time.  The idea in my piece is that the abductor is feared and yet usually can go unnoticed.  The stage for this was a local park.  As you can see in the images the park is still and quiet.  This was intentional in order to represent the idea that predators go unnoticed even though they are right in front of your eyes.  The park represents the innocence of childhood while the red cloak represents the idea of evil.  The different angles in this project are meant to establish a connection between location and how we perceive the predator.  There are often times many ways to “see” an abductor.

Reading # 5 :Performance Art

I think it’s interesting to say that no one can categorize performance arts.  I understand the concept that it contains so many other forms of art that it’s difficult to categorize, but isn’t performance arts its own category of art? I think that performance arts are very important and they have been around for a very long time.  Most of the shows we see people acting are performance arts.  I particularly liked where the article said “Performance is the expression of artists who wish to challenge the viewers' perceptions of art and the limits of those perceptions”.  This is so true.  In fact, this is what I always think of when doing a video project.  My goal is to find something unique that will challenge the viewers’ to think outside the box.  This is an important aspect of all arts especially visual and performing arts.  Overall I liked this article. Finally, I think it was interesting to see the author state that performing arts are becoming a medium of expression on its own.  I didn’t agree with the part where she said that little is known about performing arts rich and extensive evolution.  Many performing artists thrive on the knowledge of this field.  As an artist I know that in Graphic Design I try to absorb as much as I can.  With this class I’ve been trying to absorb as much of the arts as I can.  This shows that I seek a better understanding.  I think this is the same for performing arts and not only the artists themselves, but the viewers.

Project 4 Artist Statement

            For my video I wanted to do something about my high school experience with a flute instructor and kids in my band class. When I was playing the flute I was not very good at it and was definitely one of the lowest skilled people in the class. Kids in my grade and the flute instructor treated me like dirt and that I was a failure to life. During this time “Numb” by Linkin Park became my favorite song and inspired me to work on what I loved best which was drawing and at the time physics and math instead of worrying about something I was no longer interested in so I dropped band and joined theatre and had a really great time. I ended up being sound head and stage manager and graduated with honors even though they thought I was a failure.

Artist Statement #4

This project was a challenge for me. It took me a while to learn how to use iMovie.  I have never used it before.  But I challenged myself.  I ended up with this video.  I found four different videos and combined them together.

1-All of the light music

2-Step Into The Light

3-Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue - Sunny side of the street.

4-Prototype & Carnage -Running To The Sea

 From the first video I took the sound.  From the second video I took the elements of lights from the pictures. It was very beautiful because there are different colors in this video.  From the third video I took some images, as well as, the fourth video.  The last video of the ball I designed myself.  It was interesting to manipulate the movement and coloring of the ball on my own. I was able to learn how to overlap the videos and make them work together as one piece.  I learned a new technique and a new program.  I hope that that this works as a quality piece that brings enjoyment to viewers.

I was impressed with how much you wrote in response.  Although, with such a long read it's understandable that you would need all that space. (Smile).  I think you put a lot of thought into your response and that shows a great understanding for the subject matter.  I like that you summerized more than just a few words that you found throughout the article.  I also think it was good that you went through the different artists and wrote about them individually.  The only thing I was missing from your work is the opinion you had.  Most of the writing was just a summary.  Since we each read it, the thing I would have liked to see is more of you in the response.  But great job!

I like the way you broke down each artists style and briefly explained what their artwork view is.  I think that it's important when you read such a large article, to include as much of it as possible in your response.  It really helps get an idea of what is important to you as an artist.  I agree that Robert's method is more realistic and gives off the feeling of time and motion.  I think all of these artists have unique qualities that could be combined to make great work.

Reading response #4

I thought the story in the beginning of this article was interesting because it seeks to find an answer as to why we developed art. I like the way that they establish a connection between love, longing, and art.  Many times people will compare art to the idea of passion and love. I also think it’s interesting how Buddhists try to understand the meaning of art.  The whole idea of art seems so romantic and mysterious, yet it is most likely a development of something much simpler.  I also enjoyed the way that psychology came about in the article.   Between Klein and Freud, the possibilities are endless.  I think the best apart about the article is although it seeks to understand the meaning of art and it’s coming out, the entire idea is still so secret.  I don’t really have an opinion about the topics discussed because they are all likely and unlikely.  The reason art is so beautiful is because of it’s mystery.  No one is meant to understand the origin.  Mainly, it comes from within.

I understand when you said you had much trouble with this project Although we have different reasons, my problem was the quality if I want the clear videos I have problem with the size of the file, if I reduce the size the video is not clear, but you did good in the end and I like how you used the women for your project.

Artist Statement

The process of creating a GIF is like nothing I have experienced in the studio. I find it interesting that you must lower the quality of the image in order to post it on Tumblr. I have been reflexing on the idea of GIFs as a form of Internet trash. I wanted my GIFs to be eye catching and so I thought why not use another form of Internet trash, artist Brooke Candy.  Candy is an example of an artist using the Internet to become known. I’m not really a fan of Candy, but her videos are entertaining. Because of the shock factor, I think her videos translate well into GIFs. My GIFs will most likely die a short un-blogged life but Brooke Candy will live forever! <— haha/ jk

I agree with you, When I was looking on the Internet for subject for this project I found a lot of these videos as you called them trash not to mention the quality is verey bad as if they just want to shot naked women in strange and odd positions with out caring about clear pictures, that’s make me suffer especially after tumbler force me to lower the quality of the image, but we learned some thing new about GIF files, first thing I’ll look for website allow me post more then 1mb lol.

Artist Statement# 3

 For my project I chose to use a kid’s cartoon to have a change in style.  Most of the work we do is serious.  This was a fun project that I was able to manipulate into telling a story.  There ended up being eleven videos in order to complete the story, but each one is unique.  This is my first time using GIF in Photoshop.  I learned something new which made this project fun for me.  This opened the door for me to explore more so I can learn more. As usual it took me a while to choose which topic to do, so I did get a lot of practice.  I will definitely try this more on my own.
