I guess I have never really put much thought into performance as an art (although i have always looked up to performers). Now after doing the reading and watching some of the videos it occurs to me how versatile performance as art can be. In the reading the writer states, "Whenever a certain school, be it Cubism, Minimalism, or Conceptual art, seemed to have gained a stranglehold on art production and criticism, artists turned to performance as a way of breaking down categories and indicating new directions (Goldberg, 23)." I enjoyed coming to the realization that artists used performance as a way to "think outside the box", to move people, to protest, to shed light. I think every kind of artist can use performance art because it has no limits and it can be just as powerful (if not more) than any other type of art, be it drawing, painting, sculpture.
I also thought it was interesting how the reading describes performance art being seen in a series of waves, really shown when performance provided a release from whatever was going on in that time period. It has been used throughout most art periods and there is usually a good reason why people turned to performance as an art form.
