People who complain about those "batfamily meets the justice league" or "peter parkers fieldtrip to stark industries" fanfics and that the betry the authors ignorance about that universes are missing the point entirely. I'm sure most people who write them could write perfectly in character comic book fanfiction, its just that its reveal porn. Like thats it. You know how people write completely ooc smut using characters they like bc its a good shortcut for porn, its like that for people who get off (usually non-sexually) to reveals. Its for people who didn't watch supernatural teen shows but looked up every werewolf (etc) reveal on YouTube, its for people who watched the last episode of gossip girl first, its for people who spend hours every night crafting elaborate senerios that lead up to some reveal that they always reset before it can get to the good part, its for people who feel physically uncomfortable when a fic or episode ends with someone finding out something and then doesn't show or skips the reaction. Its literally a drug and I love it. Having a constant set up so you can read nearly identical but different reactions over and over agin without worrying about set up. Sure its like junk food compared to other fics but god it tastes good.

The older I get the more I think about teen sidekicks differently. When I think about grown adults taking on teen protégés I'm like sure makes sense but that fact is many of these heroes are in their early/mid 20s with a 15 year old sidekick. Like I know a lot of these relationships become parental in nature but as someone who was close with a ~24 yo staff member in hs, thats just your bro with a little more life experience. However this does make a lot of the arguments and drama make more sense. The concept of being a mentor when you barely understand your own life. Plus the power trip of being in charge for the first time. And the fact that intellectually your not really that far apart. I've always understood this from the sidekick perspective but I feel like the mentor side is clicking in a new way for me.

The way some people talk about ted kord's weight really pisses me off sometimes. Before we go any further my qualifications are: I'm fat, I've struggled with over-eating, I love ted kord, and I actually read his appearances in order.

Okay. Ted being fat is not just a trait of his nor is it essential to his character. Its an eating disorder. You wouldn't sexualize a character's anorexia so stop sexualizing his binge eating (if you would sexualise anorexia or are into feeder kink or whatever ignore this psa and go do your thing over there). He has struggled with binge eating his whole life and was bullied for his weight from childhood throughout college until he graduated at 19 and tried to recover via training and regulating his diet. He is an olympic level acrobat and martial artist, something that he heavily relies on in order to be able to save others without injuring himself. His body is capable of staying fit if not for his binge eating. When he starts binging again its during the period where booster is at the conglomerate and the team is a mess and he feels like he's losing grip on his life so he compensates with food and slacking on training (which is part of the job he is being paid for). It is something that he struggles to control, its not that hes slacking on a restrictive diet, its that he's coping by eating an extremely unhealthy amount of food. You can be fat and fit, but ted during binging episodes is not fit. His crime fight suffers, he can't even beat guy without the ring, and he becomes depressed. The specifics of his disorder change based on continuity but stands that it either impacts his ability to be a hero, or in cases where he is retired bc of his heart condition it could quite literally kill him! There is a possibility that this disorder has made his heart worse and it being something that he needs to get under control means that retired ted is probably at times thinner than hero ted. Now that being said, his metabolism probably means that when not properly exercising he struggles to maintain the classic hero physique more than average even when eating normally and he can definitely be a little softer around the belly while still being a functioning hero. There are also interesting threads to play with about how he feels about his appearance and how he is perceived, especially as it is stated that his class clown persona comes from growing up fat. But for ted whats important isn't that hes fat its that his weight fluctuates, it goes through phases and thoses phases are directly related to whats going on it the rest of his life. And it would be cool for people to deal with his struggles from a character with severely disordered eating perspective rather than just going oh "hot fat man"
