Hey! So I know this isn’t technically what your blog is about so you don’t have to post this if you don’t want.

I’m undiagnosed autistic and since joining the autistic community on Tumblr I decided I wanted to write a book with an autistic character as the main character! My character has sensory issues with soft or fluffy things, but I don’t, so I was hoping to find someone who does to ask a few questions and make sure my portrayal of this was okay!

I was just hoping to get this out there so I might find someone with this specific sensory issue. My writing blog is @timelord-winchester-22b and I’d prefer any messages to go to there, thanks!

whats aba?

aba (applied behavioral analysis), put simply, is the act of changing an autistic person’s behavior through reward and punishment (operant conditioning). this may seem not so bad at first, but if you look more into it the worse it is shown to be.

the goal of aba is to make neurodivergent appear as similar to neurotypical children as possible. the creator of aba therapy saw autistic people as being not human until they preformed to a standard that he deemed acceptable. this is incredibly ableist.

the aba therapists give the child a command, and punish or reward the child based on their ability to do this. such punishments as spraying water in a child’s face, forcing them to drink strong/spicy things like hotsauce, and hitting the child are reported. children are forced to sit still, not stimming, and if they can’t do this then they are punished. some therapists will take away things like special interests, cherished items, and even food/drinks/play time if a child cannot do what they deem ‘socially acceptable.’

i’m sure there is more on this topic, from people who have experienced this ‘therapy’ and from other’s online, but i’m not in the correct mindset to go find it right now. followers, feel free to add more.
