I’ve had a little maxiel song fic plot bunny bouncing around in my head for the last week… but we are in the middle of some house renovations so I haven’t had time to sit down and write anything but here’s some lines which are bouncing around my head.
The thought has been bouncing around Max’s head since a hot and sticky Singapore night.
An idea he’s had since long before that night.
It’s been slowly solidifying through months of messages which had toed the line of friendship, until it hadn’t.
Daniel at Wimbledon
Max thinks about the fact that he’s now older than Daniel was when they became teammates.
Max is irritated.
He's essentially the same age as Daniel was when they became teammates.
Most of the rookies are older than he was.
He's tried. He's really tried.
It should be easy. To get to Formula One, your whole life is racing. You all have the same passion and interest. You should, of course, get along.
It hasn't been easy.
Max just doesn't understand.
He messages Daniel about it constantly, and Daniel responds quickly.
What do you expect mate? They’re babies.
DID YOU THINK I WAS A BABY???
🙄 nah, not really
Max thinks about the way he looked at Daniel back then. He didn’t realise it at the time, the way his affection was carved into his features. He didn’t recognise the emotion which drove every action.
He knows now.
He sees it when others look at him.
He knows he still feels the same about Daniel. He tries so hard to keep it hidden, and knows he fails every time.
He wonders if Daniel could see it in him, as easily as he can see it in others.
Can still see it.
He wonders if Daniel felt the same annoyance he feels now.
He knows Daniel did not.
He wonders why.
He hopes he knows the answer.
slipping out real
Oscar posts soft videos to get off and feel less alone. One comment hits a little too close.

snippet:
Oscar doesn’t usually think too hard about the why.
Why he does it. Why he keeps doing it. Why it feels a little less like a game every time he sets the tripod up.

And so here, to celebrate Daniel’s 37th Birthday is a little bit more of my “Marry me when I’m 40” ficlet!
It’s 3 months until he turns 40 and Daniel finds himself doomscrolling. But instead of mindless reels, it’s his simply his own feed.
He’s archived about 15 of his own posts, followed two new people and unfollowed about 7.
He hearts a photo his sister posted and comments with a cringing and a laughing emoji.
He pauses at the birth announcement of Scotty’s second child. A pang of, something, hits him deep in his chest.
He’s halfway through writing a congratulatory message, when his phone vibrates and a message notification pops up.
Daniel frowns in confusion.
Do you think you will ever want to live in to Monaco again?
The random questions from Max have not stopped, albeit in between normal conversations. In fact, Daniel thinks he and Max have been speaking more regularly and feel closer now than at any point in his F1 career, which is saying something.
Um… maybe. You offering to house me? 🤣Probably the only way I could afford it now!
Yes, of course
Thanks Maxy! 🤣🤣🤣
I would be a pretty shitty husband if I did not want you to live with me?
Daniel freezes.
What the fuck?
He’s hitting call on his phone before he can properly think it through.
“Daniel?” Max answers almost immediately.
“Er, husband? Maxy?” Daniel laughs nervously.
“Okay, fiancé if you want to be exact. I am wanting to work out the logistics for after.” Max says, and he sounds serious.
“After what?” Daniel asks cautiously.
“The wedding. Daniel, are you okay?” Max sounds concerned, and Daniel thinks that he should be. “I could, of course, move to Australia but Raymond says that it is best that you move here for tax purposes.” Daniel can hear Max frowning through the phone.
And for no logical reason, Daniel hears himself answering, “Oh, yeah, that makes sense.”
"what's so bad about the untagged use of AI?" this is my answer. humans have limited time. that's what makes the things we choose to spend our time on special. when a human writes a story, they're choosing to use their time to tell that particular story, even though there are other things they could be doing, or other stories they could be telling.
when readers choose to engage with a story, they're investing their limited time in an unknown outcome. they might like the story, they might hate the story, it might be the greatest thing they'd ever read. but part of the social contract between readers and writers is that it is the writer's own original writing. it is their effort that they are offering in exchange for the reader's attention.
the heart of fandom is that it is a community of people who are putting in labour for no outcome other than human-to-human enjoyment. no one is earning money. no one is "getting" anything out of participating in fandom other than comradery and community.
when people use AI to generate writing and don't tag it, there is an act of deception. it's not a story written by a person, but content generated by a machine. it is taking reader's attention under a false pretext.
my threshold for what i am willing to read if it's written by a human is completely different than if i know it's AI generated. a human with a beautiful unhinged brain may bring a brilliant horniness to a trope that i'm not otherwise that fond of and make it well worth the time to read it. a human can write a story with a take i've never considered before, or a perspective so unique it changes the way i see things.
AI can't do anything new, because it is simply averaging out everything that humans have already written.
when readers choose to spend their limited time writing comments to authors, they need to know if they're commenting on someone's actual writing or something generated by AI. it is absolutely true that some people are happy to read AI generated stories. but I'll see comments on stories that are clearly AI generated talking about how great the writing is and how much they admire the author etc. and it is my guess that at least some of the people wouldn't have chosen to leave that feedback in that way if they'd known the story was AI generated.
people can and do choose to spend their time on things created by AI. but AI can create more content than humans would ever be able to engage with. which is why we need to know if something is AI generated or not.
a human's writing is something that we can't get anywhere else. part of the deception in not tagging that something is AI generated is that we all have access to the same AI apps. do i want to read the slop churned out based on your prompts? or do i want to feed in my own prompts to get slop that is more specifically tailored to my taste? (i mean, i don't. but hypothetically.)
i think there are a lot of good reasons not to use AI to create fic (environmental, writing is great, the joy of the craft etc.), but at the end of the day, that's a choice everyone is going to make for themselves.
but we also need to be allowed to choose whether or not to engage with things that are AI generated. and using AI without tagging it takes that choice away from readers. it is tricking us into giving our limited time to a machine, even if we'd never choose to do that intentionally.
One day we will sit back and have a beer together on the farm, Max thinks to himself.
One day I will convince Daniel to drive with me again. Max secretly hopes that Daniel say yes when asked.
One day I will be brave enough to tell him how I really feel. Max takes a sip of his G&T, and counts out how many he would need.
When One day becomes Today, Max does not end up needing any liquid courage. It turns out, all he needs is Daniel back by his side.
Daniel of course has to ruin the moment by laughing against his lips and saying, “Shotgun driving the first stint.”
do you ever wonder if every time Max looks at his racing number, if he thinks about Daniel?
If I only do one thing this year fandom wise it’s going to finish writing Late night pick up.
Yes. I know it will be two years later. 🙈
So I’ll just leave you with this.
When all things are said and done, once they’ve gotten together, Charles will tell everyone they got together because of him.
oh look... a little Maxiel drabble. Yep. I'm still alive! barely.
When it comes to Daniel, Max isn’t used to silence.
He’s used to midnight phone calls. A laughing voice apologising for waking him up from the other side of the world.
He’s used to shouting from across the paddock, interruptions with no care for cameras present.
When it comes to Daniel, Max isn’t used to space.
He’s used to an arm, slung around shoulders, pulling him close.
He’s used to a warm hand, of skin pressed against his, no regard for personal space.
When Max lost Daniel as a teammate, he worried they would drift apart.
They didn’t.
Max worried that Daniel would move on and the space that Max took up would be filled by someone new.
It wasn’t.
.
Now though, it’s been months without a word from Daniel.
He assumed that they would see each other if they were in the same country, or at least the same continent.
A cold feeling washes over him when he realises that he’s had nothing but silence and space from Daniel for months.
Max has always let Daniel take the lead. Max following, helpless and a little infatuated.
Max realises now that he needs to make a move. That he wants all of Daniel's space, and his words, and his touch.
He just hopes he's not too late.
hi!!! i love your works and the way you write your fanfics <3 Is there any chance you'll post the second part of "late night pick up"?? thank u :)
Awww thank you! ☺️
I will! But first I need to finish writing it 🙃😭
The way my notes is filled with things like this 🙃
I miss my heated rivalry x(
