Meet one of our fabulous instrumentalists, harpist Julia Scott! Julia Ann Scott is currently Principal Harpist with both the Westmoreland & Butler Symphonies, teaches at Grove City College, the City Music Center at Duquesne University, the Moon Crest After-School Music Program, and maintains an active freelance and private teaching career.
After graduating summa cum laude in Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1985, Julia went on to earn a Master's Degree in International Affairs. In 1986 she received a Fulbright Scholarship to spend a year as Principal Harpist of the National Symphony of Ecuador. During the next four-and-a-half years in Ecuador, she was a featured concert soloist in Quito, and was chosen to play Claude Debussy’s Danses Sacree et Profane with the National Symphony for Ecuadorian President Rodrigo Borja. She also toured Ecuador as a concert artist, multiple times with Belgian flutist Myriam Graulus or Russian soprano Olga Dobravolskaya, under the auspices of the American Embassy.
In the fall of 1992, Julia was awarded a graduate assistantship in harp repair to the Indiana School of Music in Bloomington, where she earned her Master's in Music Performance, with honors. She received her Artist's Diploma in 1997 from the Duquesne School of Music. From 1995 - 2013 she substituted with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and accompanied them on tours to many venues, including Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center. In 1998 she was Principal Harpist on the P.S.O. tour to Canada with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. She has played under the batons of Lorin Maazel, Marek Janowsky, Andre Previn, John Williams, Robert Shaw, Marvin Hamlisch, Dan Meyer, Juan-Pascal Tortelier, John Adams, Robert Page, Leonard Slatkin, Mason Bates, and Manfred Honeck, Lawrence Loh, and Thomas Hong, to name a few. In September 2001, Julia was both greatly saddened and honored to provide music for the funerals given by the National Red Cross at Indian Lake, Pennsylvania, for the heroes of Flight 93. She performed at Union Station in Washington, D.C., to honor United States Senators and members of the Presidential Cabinet at a dinner commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the foundation of the Fulbright Association.
Julia spent the summer of 1993 as Principal Harpist and Soloist with the American Wind Symphony. She has played twelve operas with the Pittsburgh Opera, and does freelance work with orchestras throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. She recently-formed chamber group, Harpe Diem, made up of former and current students, recently performed in Butler, PA, immediately before the Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas concert.www.seraphicsingers.com/scott
